I received the letter handed to me by Du Ming, and the familiar scent of ink made my heart tremble. His handwriting on the paper was still powerful, but the guilt and unease that flowed between the lines felt unfamiliar. Each word was filled with his apologies, his explanations, and… an invitation.
“Lingxi, I know I have disappointed you, but I hope you can give me a chance to make it up to you. Tomorrow night at seven, do you remember the place where we first met? I will be waiting for you there.”
I closed the letter, my mind in chaos. Du Ming's apology felt sincere; I could sense that. But could I really forgive him so easily after repeated concealments and deceptions?
“Lingxi, go ahead, give yourself a chance and also give Du Ming a chance,” Bai Wei said softly as she held my hand.
I looked up at Bai Wei's sincere eyes and finally nodded.
The next day, I deliberately delayed my arrival until seven-thirty at that familiar place. It was a tranquil bamboo grove where a gentle breeze rustled the leaves, as if whispering ancient secrets.
Du Ming had been waiting there for a long time. He stood tall in a black suit deep within the bamboo grove, seemingly merging with the surroundings. When he saw me, a relieved smile spread across his face as he quickly walked towards me.
“Lingxi, you’re here.” He took my hand and led me to a clearing deeper in the grove. There was a table covered with a white tablecloth set up in the clearing, adorned with exquisite tableware. Two red candles emitted a soft glow, illuminating the scene decorated with fresh flowers—romantic and warm.
“You…” I looked around in surprise, momentarily at a loss for words.
Du Ming gazed at me with gentle and affectionate eyes. “Lingxi, I know I was wrong. I shouldn’t have hidden things from you or doubted your sincerity. I was just… too afraid of losing you.”
He paused before continuing, “I swear from now on I will be honest with you and will never let you feel sad again. Can you forgive me?”
His voice was deep and hoarse, carrying a hint of pleading that made it hard for me to refuse. I avoided his gaze and said softly, “Du Ming, you know I'm not unreasonable; it’s just that once trust is broken, rebuilding it is not easy.”
“I know, I know.” Du Ming tightened his grip on my hand slightly. “I am willing to prove my sincerity through my actions and show you my love.”
I took a deep breath and looked into his eyes. “Du Ming, I hope you can keep your word.”
A relieved smile appeared on his face as he gently embraced me. “Thank you, Lingxi. Thank you for giving me another chance.”
In that moment, I felt the warmth of his embrace and the sincerity deep within him. Perhaps we could start anew; perhaps our future would be even brighter.
“Ahem…”
Suddenly, a light cough came from behind us. Du Ming and I turned simultaneously to see Bai Wei standing not far away with a teasing expression.
“Oh dear, looks like I came at the wrong time and interrupted your little moment,” Bai Wei said with a smile as she walked over. “But seeing you two back together puts my mind at ease.”
Du Ming awkwardly rubbed his nose. “Bai Wei, what are you doing here?”
“What? Am I not welcome?” Bai Wei raised an eyebrow. “If it weren't for me, who knows how long you two would still be in a cold war.”
I cast a grateful glance at Bai Wei; if it weren't for her mediation, Du Ming and I might still be stuck in our standoff.
“Alright then, I won’t disturb your sweet moments any longer. I have things to do; I'll take my leave,” Bai Wei waved her hand and turned to leave.
I exchanged a smile with Du Ming, my heart filled with sweetness.
In the days that followed, Du Ming and I cherished each other even more. We practiced together, explored together, and faced various challenges in life side by side. Du Ming also kept his promise, becoming more open and trusting with me.
However, the peaceful life did not last long; a greater crisis was quietly approaching...
