I tightly clutched the letter in my hand, each word on the paper felt like a sharp thorn, piercing my heart. The Black Mandala Flower, a symbol of death and revenge, who sent it? Who is watching me from the shadows, wanting to put me to death?
"What's wrong, Lingxi?" Du Ming noticed my unease and pulled me into his embrace. "Is there some movement from the Shadows again?"
I didn't speak, just handed him the anonymous letter. After reading it, Du Ming's face turned ashen. He slammed the letter down on the table, his anger almost igniting the entire room: "Damn it! How dare they threaten you? I will not let them get away with this!"
"No, this letter wasn't sent by the Shadows," I shook my head and pointed at the Black Mandala Flower on the envelope. "I've never seen this symbol before; the Shadows wouldn't use such a method to show their power."
"Then who could it be?" Bai Wei leaned in, her brow furrowed. "Could there be a traitor among us?"
I took a deep breath, trying to calm myself: "No matter who it is, their goal is to stop us. Perhaps this letter is a breakthrough; we might be able to follow this lead to find out who is behind it all."
"No way, that's too dangerous!" Du Ming immediately rejected the idea without thinking. "What if it's a trap? I can't let you take that risk!"
"But if we do nothing, we will only be at their mercy. I feel so uneasy," I shook my head, my tone resolute. "I must find out who sent this letter and what they want!"
"But..." Du Ming wanted to say something else but I interrupted him.
"I know you're worried about me, but I can't just sit back and wait," I held his hand, my gaze firm. "Trust me, I will be fine."
Seeing my determined expression, Du Ming finally relented. He sighed helplessly: "Alright, I'll go with you."
I shook my head: "No need for that. You and Bai Wei have more important things to do; let me handle the investigation."
Bai Wei stepped up in support: "Lingxi is right; the Shadows still need you watching over them. Let me and Lingxi handle this investigation."
Du Ming hesitated for a moment but eventually nodded: "Okay, but you must be careful. Notify me immediately if anything happens."
I nodded and exchanged a glance with Bai Wei; we both knew that a new storm was about to arrive.
"Don't worry; we're not those delicate young ladies." Bai Wei winked at Du Ming and took my hand. "Just wait for our good news!"
I knew Bai Wei was trying to comfort Du Ming and reassure me. Ever since that letter arrived, Du Ming had been particularly tense, wanting to keep me tied to him at all times.
"I will arrange for people to protect you in secret," Du Ming still looked worried, his brow furrowed. "Remember, if you notice anything unusual, retreat immediately; don't engage in battle."
"Got it, got it! You're so nagging!" Bai Wei waved her hand impatiently. "At this rate, Lingxi will become useless because of your pampering!"
I smiled helplessly; although Du Ming's concern was a bit excessive, I knew he meant well.
Bai Wei and I left Du Family Villa quietly without alerting anyone. Following the postmark address on the envelope, we tracked down our destination and finally arrived at a company called Galaxy Technology.
On the surface, this company was engaged in biotechnology research, but based on our previous investigations, Galaxy Technology was actually a secret stronghold of the Shadows used for conducting some unsavory experiments.
"It seems we've found our target," Bai Wei whispered. "What should we do next? Should we just barge in?"
I shook my head. "The 'Shadows' act cautiously; this place must be heavily guarded. Charging in would only alert them."
"What should we do then? We can't just wait here!" Bai Wei said, a bit anxious.
I pondered for a moment and pointed to a building across from the company. "Let's check out that place."
The building was a hotel, and Bai Wei and I rented a room that overlooked Galaxy Technology. Through the telescope, we could clearly see the activity inside the company.
"Look, what is that?" Bai Wei suddenly pointed at a building in the backyard of Galaxy Technology.
That building was very concealed, surrounded by high walls and electric fences, with fully armed guards at the entrance, looking quite formidable.
"Could it be..." A bold guess suddenly formed in my mind.
"Let's go take a look!" Bai Wei also realized something and pulled me outside. We circled around to the backyard and discovered there was even a dog door in the wall! Bai Wei looked at me incredulously. "You can't be thinking..."
I nodded and without saying a word, pulled out a Night Suit from my storage bag, applied a few Invisibility Talismans and Lightness Talismans on myself, then crouched down and crawled through the dog door.
"Hey! Be careful!" Bai Wei whispered behind me.
I gave her an "okay" gesture and disappeared into the night.
With the aid of the talismans, I easily avoided the patrolling guards and slipped into the mysterious building.
The interior of the building was even more secure than I had imagined, with surveillance cameras and infrared sensors everywhere. I carefully navigated around these traps and finally found the entrance to the underground laboratory.
The laboratory was brightly lit, with various instruments buzzing as they operated. I took a deep breath, held it in, and slowly walked inside.
The walls of the laboratory were covered with various experimental reports and data analysis charts. I glanced over them and was immediately stunned by their contents!
These experimental reports were all about me!
More precisely, they were about my Bloodline and spiritual root!
The report stated that my Bloodline was very special, possessing some kind of powerful force, while my spiritual root was an exceptionally rare mutated one that could cultivate all types of techniques.
The Shadows captured me to study my Bloodline and spiritual root, intending to replicate more versions of "me" for their use!
My heart raced violently, a chill running from my feet to my head.
I forced myself to calm down and continued to look through other experimental reports, hoping to find more clues about my origins.
Just then, I heard footsteps approaching from outside the door.
My heart tightened, and I quickly hid behind a large piece of equipment.
"What's going on? Has the girl's blood sample been analyzed yet?" a deep voice asked.
"Not yet. Her bloodline is very special, and our instruments can't identify it," another voice replied.
"Continue the analysis. We must uncover her secret as soon as possible!"
I held my breath, not daring to make a sound.
The footsteps grew closer, and I could even feel the other person's rapid breathing.
Just when I thought I was about to be discovered, the footsteps suddenly stopped.
"What's wrong?" the deep voice asked.
"Nothing, I just feel..." the other voice paused, "like someone is watching us..."
I was instantly filled with dread.
