I pressed tightly against the cold metal instrument, not daring to breathe, my heart racing wildly in my chest as if it were about to burst through my ribs. Every word they spoke felt like a sharp blade scraping past my ears, bringing waves of suffocating fear. Was I really going to be discovered today?
"It must be my imagination; this place is heavily guarded. How could anyone sneak in?" The deep voice sounded again, tinged with uncertainty.
"Maybe..." Another voice clearly sighed in relief.
As the footsteps gradually faded away, my racing heart slowly settled back into place. I peeked out from behind the instrument, confirming they had truly left before daring to take a deep breath. The laboratory was filled with a pungent smell of disinfectant mixed with various chemical odors that made me feel nauseous. I fought through the discomfort and continued searching for clues about my origins.
Suddenly, a hand covered my mouth from behind, and I widened my eyes in terror, struggling desperately.
"Don't be afraid; it's me." A familiar voice whispered in my ear, offering a hint of reassurance.
It was Bai Wei! I looked at her in surprise; how did she end up here?
"Shh! Now is not the time to talk; follow me!" Bai Wei pulled me along, weaving through until we reached a hidden corner.
"How did you get here? And how did you know I was here?" I asked in a hushed tone.
"It's a long story; just know that I'm here to help you," Bai Wei explained briefly. "You've been taking too many risks lately. The Shadows are not something you can provoke; you need to leave here immediately!"
"No, I can't just walk away like this. I have to uncover the truth about my origins and why they want to capture me!" I shook my head firmly.
"But..." Bai Wei wanted to persuade me further but was interrupted by Du Ming.
"Lingxi, I know what you're worried about, but this is too dangerous. You can't continue investigating," Du Ming said seriously, concern filling his eyes.
"No, I must find out! I have a feeling that my origins are somehow connected to the Shadows' targets. Only by unraveling this mystery can I truly protect myself and all of you!" I looked at Du Ming with determination in my gaze.
Du Ming and Bai Wei exchanged glances before finally conceding.
"Alright, we'll help you investigate," Du Ming said, gripping my hand firmly. "No matter what happens, we'll face it together."
Bai Wei nodded in agreement.
Following the clues provided by Bai Wei, the three of us arrived at a secluded warehouse. The warehouse door was tightly shut, guarded by two men in black who appeared vigilant.
"What should we do to get inside?" I asked.
"Don't worry; I've got it all planned out," Bai Wei replied as she pulled out a talisman from her pocket and affixed it to the warehouse door.
The talisman flashed with golden light, and the previously closed door swung open automatically!
We exchanged glances and cautiously stepped inside.
The warehouse was cluttered with various items, dimly lit, and filled with a damp, moldy smell.
"Be careful; there might be traps here," Du Ming warned.
We held our breath, lightening our steps as we slowly moved deeper into the warehouse.
Just then, a low voice suddenly echoed around us:
"You've finally arrived..."
The voice seemed to come from all directions, carrying an eerie presence that sent chills down our spines. Instinctively, I tightened my grip on Du Ming's hand, my palm slick with cold sweat.
"Who? Who's speaking?" Bai Wei demanded as she scanned the surroundings.
"Ha ha, want to know who I am? Then follow me." The voice echoed again, laced with a hint of mockery.
Suddenly, a pile of clutter in front of us began to move, parting to reveal a narrow passageway.
"Be careful!" Du Ming grabbed my arm and cautiously stepped into the passage.
It was pitch black inside, and I couldn't see my hand in front of my face. I felt along the walls, moving forward step by step, anxiety filling my heart.
"Don't be afraid, I'm here," Du Ming's voice reassured me, giving me great courage.
After about a quarter of an hour, we finally reached the end of the passage.
Before us lay a vast space. In the center stood an ancient altar, surrounded by many oddly shaped stone statues.
"What is this place?" I asked in astonishment.
"If I'm not mistaken, this should be an ancient ruin," Bai Wei said as he carefully observed the surroundings.
"An ancient ruin?" My surprise deepened. "How do you know?"
"I read about this ruin in ancient texts. It is said to have been a cultivation site for a powerful being from ancient times, but it was destroyed in a great battle and vanished from history," Bai Wei explained.
"So we're now in a ruin that has been lost for thousands of years?" I found it hard to believe.
At that moment, the mysterious voice echoed again:
"Welcome to my world."
As the voice faded, the stone statues on the altar suddenly lit up, emitting dazzling light.
We were startled by the sudden change and instinctively stepped back.
"Be careful!" Du Ming pulled me behind him, keeping a wary eye on the statues.
The light from the statues grew stronger until it converged into a beam that shot up into the sky.
When the beam dissipated, a mysterious figure dressed in a black robe and wearing a conical hat appeared atop the altar.
"Who are you?" Du Ming asked coldly.
The mysterious figure remained silent, slowly raising his head to reveal a pale yet handsome face.
"It's you!" I exclaimed in surprise.
This person was the same man in black I had encountered in the laboratory!
"We meet again, Guo Lingxi," the man in black said with an eerie smile playing on his lips as he looked at me.
"Who are you? Why did you capture me?" I demanded.
"Why capture you? Ha ha, once you get below, someone will tell you," the man in black said before suddenly attacking me.
"Lingxi, be careful!" Du Ming quickly stepped in front of me and engaged in combat with the man in black.
Both were skilled fighters, exchanging fierce blows without yielding an inch for a time.
I was so taken aback by this sudden turn of events that I could only watch helplessly as they fought.
“Lingxi, stop dawdling and go find the mechanism!” Bai Wei suddenly shouted at me.
I finally reacted and hurried over to the altar, searching carefully. The stone statues surrounding the altar were carved so vividly that every detail was meticulously crafted, showing no signs of flaws. I searched for a long time but found no mechanism.
Just as I was about to give up, I suddenly noticed that one of the stone statues seemed to be holding something in its hand. I approached and discovered it was a small jade pendant. I reached out to grab it, but the pendant remained completely still. I tried pulling it with all my strength several times, but it was useless.
Just when I was about to despair, I remembered what Bai Wei had said earlier—that this ruin was once a cultivation place for an ancient powerful being. Could it be that this jade pendant is the key to opening the mechanism? Taking a deep breath, I attempted to infuse a trace of spiritual energy into the pendant. Miraculously, the originally cold and hard jade began to emit a warm glow under my spiritual energy's influence. At the same time, the altar started to tremble slightly, and the surrounding stone statues seemed to come alive, emitting a low rumbling sound.
“Lingxi, what did you do?” Du Ming noticed something unusual while fending off a cloaked figure and anxiously asked me.
“I found the key to activate the mechanism!” I shouted excitedly. “This jade pendant should be the key!”
As soon as I finished speaking, a crack suddenly appeared in the center of the altar, and an ancient book slowly rose from within. The book emitted a faint golden light; its cover bore no text but exuded an air of solemnity.
Without thinking much, I rushed forward and grabbed the book. The moment I touched it, a powerful wave of energy surged from within, flooding my mind with countless pieces of information—complex and obscure—I found it hard to digest and felt an intense headache.
“Lingxi!” Du Ming saw my pale face and immediately flew over to shield me from behind, concernedly asking, “What’s wrong?”
I gritted my teeth against the pain in my head and said haltingly, “I’m fine… this book… this book contains… methods to heal you…”
Upon hearing this, Du Ming's eyes flashed with surprise and excitement. He grabbed my hand tightly and said with trembling voice, “Are you serious? Is there really a way to cure me?”
I nodded, trying to calm my surging blood flow, pointing at the ancient book as I spoke: “This book records an Ancient Secret Technique that can repair damaged souls… I believe it can definitely heal you…”
“That’s wonderful! Lingxi, you truly are my lucky star!” Du Ming exclaimed joyfully as he embraced me tightly.
However, before we could celebrate for long, a violent tremor suddenly shook the entire ruin. The ground began to shake violently; stones fell from above, and the altar started sinking slowly.
“Oh no! The ruin is collapsing! We need to get out of here quickly!” Bai Wei shouted anxiously.
We didn’t dare delay and immediately ran toward the exit. However, the speed of the collapse was beyond our imagination; we had barely run a short distance when rocks completely sealed off the passage behind us.
“What do we do? We’re trapped!” I looked at the scene before me, filled with despair.
