"Don't be afraid, Lingxi, I'm here!" Du Ming shielded me beneath him as a massive rock crashed down from above. He took the impact head-on. "Bai Wei, protect Lingxi!" he shouted, his spiritual energy surging around him as he carved a path through the collapsing ruins.
We stumbled out of the ruins, barely catching our breath when we sensed a powerful presence locking onto us.
"This is bad, it's them!" Bai Wei's expression changed, "They've detected us!"
A chill ran down my spine. Without time to think, I immediately joined Du Ming and Bai Wei in breaking through in different directions.
Along the way, I could clearly feel that the surveillance around us was tighter than ever, as if countless invisible eyes were watching our every move. I could even sense the hidden enemies drawing closer, their target clear: me, or rather, the Medical Book in my hands!
Upon returning to the Du Family, we quickly heightened our defenses.
"It seems our every move is under their watch," Du Ming said gravely, his long fingers lightly tapping on the table. "We must find a way to help you completely shake off those shadows and strengthen your power."
I took a deep breath and nodded seriously. "Yes, I've already started studying the secret techniques recorded in the Medical Book. I believe I'll find a solution soon."
During this time, Du Ming and I were almost inseparable as we delved into the secret techniques documented in the Medical Book. This ancient text was filled with obscure language that required repeated discussions between us to grasp its true meaning.
Bai Wei had always been the most perceptive among us three; she flitted between various sources of information like a nimble swallow. In recent days, she had taken it upon herself to gather intelligence outside, hoping to find any trace of those people to assist us.
"Lingxi, Du Ming, I've got news!" One day, Bai Wei rushed in through the door with an unusual seriousness on her face. "I infiltrated the black market and discovered that someone is offering a high price for your whereabouts, targeting the Medical Book in your hands!" She paused for effect before continuing with an even heavier tone, "What's worse is that they seem to have figured out your identity and know your entire life story."
My heart sank suddenly, a chill creeping up from my feet to my head. It seemed my identity had been exposed. Those people were so intent on obtaining the Medical Book that they would not give up easily. And I could no longer drag Du Ming into this mess.
"Du Ming, I need to leave for a while," I said, taking a deep breath and trying to keep my voice calm despite my reluctance. "My presence will only bring you danger; I can't bear to see you get caught up in this."
"No way! You can't go anywhere!" Du Ming rejected without hesitation, standing up abruptly with determination in his voice. "I promised to protect you; no matter what happens, I'll face it with you!"
His gaze was resolute and his tone left no room for argument, but I couldn't let him be swept into this storm. I took another deep breath and tried to suppress my inner turmoil as I spoke calmly: "Du Ming, listen to me; I'm not running away. I just want to find a better solution. They are after me; if I leave, you'll be safe."
"Safe? Without you, where's my safety?" Du Ming slammed his hand on the table with suppressed anger and unease in his voice. "Lingxi, why can't you understand? What I want isn't just survival; it's facing storms together with you!"
His words struck my heart like a heavy hammer; how could I not understand his feelings? But I couldn't let him take risks for me. If my identity were fully exposed, it would bring disaster upon him.
"Du Ming, please calm down!" I tried to make him understand my predicament. "I can't involve you in this; you have your family and your career..."
"Enough!" Du Ming suddenly interrupted me, pain and struggle evident in his eyes. "In your heart, am I just family and career? Have you never thought about how I feel about you..."
His words trailed off abruptly as I saw a fleeting vulnerability in his eyes that pierced my heart like a needle.
"Du Ming, I..." I wanted to explain but didn't know what to say.
"Just go," Du Ming turned away from me, his voice low and hoarse. "I won't stop you, but remember this: I'll wait for you until you're safe back."
His back radiated an indescribable loneliness as I opened my mouth but found no words to say. In the end, I silently turned away and left that place filled with memories.
I know that by leaving, I will face countless unknowns and dangers. But I believe that Du Ming will be fine; he will handle everything and wait for my return. As for me, I will do everything I can to resolve this as quickly as possible and return to his side.
