Qin Senior Sister sighed and said, "She saw a man in his sixties begging on the street and went over to scold him. There were so many people around, and many wanted to hit her, so they had to let her go home first."
I was astonished and said, "What does his begging have to do with her? Why scold him?"
"Exactly!" Qin Senior Sister stomped her foot in anger and said, "She thinks that since the man is old, he might as well just die instead of wasting food. If there’s one less person wasting food, there might be one more young person who can survive."
What kind of logic is that... I listened in disbelief and said, "She really should see a psychologist."
Qin Senior Sister mentioned that this kind of thing happened too often, and she was too tired to talk about it anymore; just thinking about it made her feel like she would explode with anger. I wondered how I had never noticed how dark her mindset was before. As we chatted, we walked back. Because Zheng Xuejie had drawn everyone's ire, some even chased her to her doorstep to scold her. Her parents knew their daughter was in the wrong but didn’t dare argue with anyone; they could only close the door and pretend not to hear.
When Qin Senior Sister and I reached the door, the crowd had just dispersed, leaving trash scattered everywhere, even rotten eggs and vegetable scraps on the windows. Qin Senior Sister looked a bit sad and wore a worried expression. I patted her back to comfort her, then stepped forward to knock on the door. After a long time, the door slowly opened, revealing a middle-aged man peering cautiously through the crack. When he saw me and Qin Senior Sister, he opened the door wider. He glanced outside a few times and then asked suspiciously, "Who is this?"
Qin Senior Sister introduced me as a classmate from school who came to visit Senior Sister. The middle-aged man responded with an "Oh," urging us to come in quickly before shutting the door behind us. His cautious demeanor reminded me of a secret agent meeting in the shadows, which I found somewhat amusing. Qin Senior Sister noticed my thoughts and whispered, "Don’t gloat; last time she caused trouble outside, people came here making a scene and broke a lot of things. It was terrifying."
I looked around and indeed saw traces of damage on the furniture. I couldn’t help but wonder what exactly Zheng Xuejie had done to provoke such a reaction.
The middle-aged man was naturally Zheng Xuejie's father. Hearing Qin Senior Sister’s words, he sighed involuntarily and said, "This girl has really changed; she’s driving us crazy. At this rate, I don’t know how much more trouble she’ll cause."
Qin Senior Sister brought me here specifically to resolve this issue; she said she wanted to see her and led me to knock on the door. I felt a bit nervous; if Zheng Xuejie had truly changed because of the Amulet, it meant she might have been possessed. And since the White Olive Amulet had been drained of power consecutively, it would probably struggle to protect me, let alone exorcise any spirits.
Before long, the bedroom door opened, and I saw Zheng Xuejie standing there with a cold expression on her face, showing no sign of welcoming us. Qin Senior Sister felt awkward and said, "Shen Yi wanted to see you..."
"What’s so interesting? I am who I am!" Zheng Xuejie said with a confrontational tone.
Standing no more than half a meter away from her, I didn’t sense any Yin Qi. She seemed very clean and didn’t appear to be possessed, which relieved me greatly. As long as she wasn’t possessed, everything would be manageable. However, Zheng Xuejie refused to let me into her bedroom and suspiciously asked, "What do you want?"
I replied, "I’m not here to do anything; I just came to see you."
Zheng's Father couldn’t stand it anymore and came over to scold her, saying, "A classmate came to see you out of kindness; what kind of attitude is this? What’s wrong with letting someone in? Are you hiding treasures in your room?"
"This is my room!" Zheng Xuejie shouted. "Everything here belongs to me; no one can take it away!"
Qin Senior Sister said, "We’re not trying to take anything; we just came to see you…"
"I don’t believe you! You let him come here just to drive me away! It must be like that!" Zheng Xuejie’s expression was frightening and somewhat hysterical. Given the situation at the time, calling her insane would probably have no opposition. But Zheng's Father had already taken her to the hospital for an examination; there were no mental issues—she was very clear-headed. Aside from her somewhat extreme personality, there was nothing wrong.
Seeing her agitated, I had no choice but to say, "Actually, I have another purpose for coming here; I wanted to check on the Amulet. Didn’t we say last time that we would take it back for recharging?"
"Amulet?" After hearing this, Zheng Xuejie immediately shut the door without saying a word. Qin Senior Sister and I exchanged glances, unsure of what to do. Unexpectedly, after about ten seconds, Zheng Xuejie opened the door again and shoved the Potted Amulet into my hands, saying, "Here’s the Amulet back! Don’t come looking for me again!"
I looked down and saw that there was no longer that piece of grass in the pot; the originally dark red soil now appeared deep brown. I had previously turned over the soil, but they might have filled it back in later. Although it was surprising that Zheng Xuejie returned the Amulet so readily, the Yin Qi I sensed from the pot confirmed that it was indeed genuine.
However, the more this happened, the less I understood. She had been so concerned about the Amulet before that she wouldn’t even let me take it back to Thailand for recharging despite facing bad luck every day; why did she suddenly want to get rid of it now that things were going well? To verify the authenticity of the Amulet, I went to the kitchen and found a chopstick to dig through the soil. At the bottom of the flowerpot lay a half-decayed infant skeleton, unchanged from my memory. Perhaps it was disturbed by my actions, which made the Yin Qi a bit heavier. However, since I wore a White Olive Amulet that suppressed it, that Yin Qi couldn’t affect me.
Qin Senior Sister watched intently from the side and immediately asked when I stopped moving, "So, what’s going on? Is there a problem?"
I shook my head and said, "The Amulet shouldn't be a problem; she probably isn't affected by it."
Qin Senior Sister let out a sigh, looking utterly disappointed. I was at a loss for words; her expression seemed to suggest she actually hoped she was possessed. But then again, if it were me, I might share the same thought as Qin Senior Sister. Possession may seem terrifying to ordinary people, but for professionals, it's usually something that can be easily resolved. However, a sudden personality change like Zheng Xuejie's is much more troublesome. The human psyche is incredibly complex; even after hundreds of years of research, we still don't fully understand it. Some mental illnesses can be harder to treat than cancer.
I didn't have any good solutions, so I could only comfort her by saying, "Be patient; maybe it's just temporary, and she'll be fine after a while."
Qin Senior Sister looked dejected and said, "How could she possibly get better? She won't even let anyone near her, as if everyone is out to harm her. I just don't understand how jumping off a building could have such a huge impact."
Who can explain that? I decided to put the Potted Amulet in a bag and prepare to leave. I could send it back to Thailand or hand it over to Second Uncle for handling. When Qin Senior Sister saw that I was about to leave, she quickly grabbed my arm and said, "You can't go! If you leave, who will help her?"
I helplessly replied, "Even if I stay, I can't help her."
No matter what I said, Qin Senior Sister wouldn't agree. At that moment, Zheng's Father approached and suggested that since we had come from afar, we should have dinner together that evening. Qin Senior Sister looked at me with hopeful eyes; her expression made it hard for me to refuse.
An hour later, we arrived at a restaurant and found Zheng Mama waiting for us. During dinner, the couple mentioned that they had already learned about my family situation from Qin Senior Sister and knew about my connections to some mysterious industries. Although they weren't very superstitious, they felt they had no choice but to try anything as a last resort. Inviting me for dinner was both a way to build rapport and to ask for my help in finding a solution.
I glanced at Qin Senior Sister; she slightly lowered her head, seeming somewhat guilty. I forced a smile and honestly said that there was nothing I could do. If there were even the slightest chance of helping her, I would do my best without hesitation. Seeing me refuse, Zheng's Father assumed I wanted something in return and insisted that he would pay whatever amount necessary if it could solve the problem. I told him it wasn't about money...
After some back-and-forth that nearly drove me crazy, I decided to call my grandfather. This elder in the Amulet business listened and said, "If it's not the Amulet affecting her, then even calling Ajan wouldn't help much unless they are willing to let Ajan use sorcery to forcefully change her."
Upon hearing this suggestion, I immediately rejected it. Using Voodoo to change someone is deceitful; it's not true healing. My grandfather concluded that there was no hope left and suggested they figure it out themselves. If all else fails, they could consider sending her to a psychiatric hospital for a while.
