"I don't want to be your brother anymore."
What does this mean?
Before I could think of a response to this statement, Zhou Ziran stepped forward and picked me up in his arms...
"What are you doing, Zhou Ziran? Are you crazy!?" I struggled against him, and it was only then that I realized what he meant by "I don't want to be your brother anymore."
But he wasn't listening.
I pushed Zhou Ziran away with all my strength, my chest heaving as I tried to argue but couldn't find the right words. Zhou Ziran looked at me with a complex expression, a hint of hurt in his eyes, but more resolute: "Gu Yu, I know you have your concerns, but my feelings aren't those of siblings. I like you, ever since the moment you came into this house." He paused, his tone carrying a hint of pleading, "Give me a chance to prove it to you, okay?"
The surrounding classmates began to whisper among themselves, and I felt my face burning as if I were being roasted over a fire. I lowered my head, wanting to escape this suffocating atmosphere.
"Ziran, what are you doing?!"
A familiar voice came from the edge of the crowd. I saw Zhou Ziqi, his face filled with unprecedented anger. He pushed through the crowd and stood in front of us, grabbing my hand and pulling me behind him, glaring at Zhou Ziran. "You know she is our..."
"Shut up!" Zhou Ziran interrupted him sharply, his gaze as sharp as a knife. "You have no place to speak here!"
Zhou Ziqi took a deep breath, trying to control his emotions, but the grip on my wrist tightened. I winced in pain, and only then did he realize his mistake and quickly let go. However, his eyes still held hostility as he looked at Zhou Ziran: "Brother, what exactly do you want to do? Have you thought about Gu Yu's feelings? Have you thought about... my feelings?"
The tremor and sadness in his voice pierced through me; my heart felt like it was being tightly squeezed by an invisible hand, making it hard to breathe. I raised my head and looked at these two most important people in my life for the first time, feeling truly caught in a dilemma.
In the following days, I could feel the unusual gazes around me wherever I went. In the restroom, Lin Wei deliberately bumped into me, raising her chin arrogantly, a mocking smile playing on her lips. "Some people just love to toy with others' feelings; it's truly pathetic and infuriating."
I chose to ignore her provocation and walked straight to the sink. Behind me, Lin Wei's sharp voice pierced through the air. "Don't think I don't know what you're thinking. You just want to play both sides and not offend anyone, right? Let me tell you, a scheming woman like you is not worthy of Brother Ziran!"
The faucet was running, but I felt no coolness from the water. Lin Wei's words were like poisonous thorns, stabbing deeply into my heart, leaving me nowhere to escape.
In the evening, as I walked home, my phone suddenly buzzed with a message from an unknown number. The content was just one sentence: "Want to know the truth? Meet on the school rooftop tomorrow at noon."
I held my phone tightly, my mind in chaos.
====================
Gu Yu stared at the short message on her phone screen, an inexplicable sense of unease washing over her. Who sent this message? What did they want? Could it be related to Lin Wei? A series of questions tangled in her mind like tightly wound threads, making it hard for her to breathe.
She stopped in her tracks and looked up at the distant sky. The sun was setting, casting a fiery red glow across the clouds, yet it did nothing to illuminate her current feelings of confusion.
"Want to know the truth?"
This phrase echoed repeatedly in her ears, like a temptation or a warning. Gu Yu bit her lip tightly, struggling internally. Finally, she took a deep breath, clenched her phone, and headed home.
The next day at noon, Gu Yu arrived at the rooftop as promised, her heart filled with anxiety. The afternoon sun filtered through the wire mesh, casting mottled shadows on the ground, and a faint smell of dust lingered in the air. The rooftop was empty except for the wind rustling an empty drink bottle in the corner.
"Could it be a prank?"
Gu Yu was filled with doubt and was about to turn to leave when she heard a light, cheerful footsteps behind her.
"Gu Yu, you’re here."
Lin Wei's voice came from behind, laced with a hint of pride. Gu Yu turned around and saw Lin Wei standing there with a meaningful smile on her face.
"It's you?" Gu Yu frowned slightly, her tone tinged with caution.
"Surprised to see me?" Lin Wei stepped closer, crossing her arms and sizing up Gu Yu with a smirk. "I specifically invited you here to help you see the truth about some things."
A warning bell rang in Gu Yu's mind as she asked calmly, "What do you mean?"
Lin Wei feigned mystery, smiling as she pulled out her phone from her pocket, opened a photo, and held it out in front of Gu Yu.
"Do you see clearly now? This is a photo I worked hard to get."
In the photo, Zhou Ziran and Zhou Ziqi stood side by side, both dressed casually and beaming with youthful smiles, looking very close. The background of the photo was the sofa in Gu Yu's living room.
It was just an ordinary group photo, but for some reason, Gu Yu's heart skipped a beat, and an ominous premonition surged within her.
"What are you trying to say?" Gu Yu forced herself to remain calm, though her voice unconsciously rose a few notches.
"Stop playing dumb, Gu Yu." Lin Wei put away her phone, the smile fading from her face and replaced by a cold expression. "Did you think I didn’t know? You and Zhou Ziran and Zhou Ziqi aren’t really siblings at all; you’re just an orphan they adopted."
