"Police! Don't move!" Officer Zhang's voice was loud and authoritative as he burst into the secret room with several fully armed officers.
Mr. X's expression changed, and he muttered a curse under his breath before turning to flee.
"Don't let him escape!" Officer Zhang shouted, rushing forward to grapple with Mr. X.
The room instantly descended into chaos, with gunfire, shouts, and the sounds of fighting blending into a deafening cacophony.
Taking advantage of the confusion, I quickly untied the ropes binding Bai Xiaolian and pulled her up to run outside.
"Follow me!" I urged Bai Xiaolian as we weaved through the chaotic crowd, dodging flying fists and bullets.
"This way!" Bai Xiaolian suddenly pointed to a small door in the corner and shouted at me.
Without hesitation, I grabbed her hand and dashed through the small door, the sounds of gunfire and shouting fading behind us.
Inside the small door was a narrow passageway. We ran down the corridor for what felt like an eternity until we finally reached an iron door.
Bai Xiaolian fumbled with the mechanism on the iron door, anxiously saying, "Hurry! There should be a secret passage that leads outside!"
With a soft click, the iron door opened slightly.
We had no time to think; we pushed the iron door open together and squeezed through.
Bang! The iron door slammed shut behind us, sealing off all danger.
Using the faint light, we continued forward along the secret passage.
"Be careful!" Bai Xiaolian suddenly grabbed my hand and pointed ahead. "It looks like there's a trap up ahead!"
I focused my gaze and saw a bottomless pit suddenly appear on the ground ahead, with some rubble and wooden planks scattered around the opening.
"Damn it!" I couldn't help but curse; Mr. X was truly malicious, even setting traps along the escape route.
"What do we do now?" Bai Xiaolian asked anxiously.
I looked around, searching for something we could use.
"Don't worry!" I pointed to a pipe at the top of the secret passage and said to Bai Xiaolian, "We can climb through there!"
Bai Xiaolian glanced up; the pipe was over two meters high and covered in dust and rust, looking precarious.
"But..." Bai Xiaolian hesitated.
"Trust me!" I said firmly, then leaped up, grabbing the pipe and struggling to climb it.
I turned to Bai Xiaolian, extended my hand, and said, "Hurry up!"
Bai Xiaolian gritted her teeth and climbed up after me.
We crawled slowly along the pipe, which creaked and groaned as if it could break at any moment.
I dared not look down or back; I could only crawl forward desperately, hoping to escape this cursed place as soon as possible.
"Be careful!" Bai Xiaolian suddenly exclaimed.
Before I could react, my feet slipped, and I fell down...
A flash of white light crossed my vision, a buzzing filled my ears, and my body felt as if it were being torn apart with pain. I tried to grab onto something but could only watch helplessly as I plunged into endless darkness.
"Li Ran! Li Ran! Wake up!"
In a daze, I heard someone anxiously calling my name. I struggled to open my heavy eyelids, only to find myself in an unfamiliar room. The white walls, the pungent smell of disinfectant, and the bright lights overhead made me feel dizzy.
"Where... where am I?" I tried to sit up but felt a sharp pain radiating from my limbs.
"Don't move!" A familiar voice rang out. I turned my head to see Bai Xiaolian sitting by the bed, looking at me with concern.
"Xiaolian... what is this..." I glanced around, images of what happened before the fall flashing through my mind. "Did we... escape?"
"We're in the medical room of the 'Nightshade' club," another deep voice came from the doorway. I turned to see Officer Zhang standing there, his sharp gaze fixed on me.
"The 'Nightshade' club?" I widened my eyes in disbelief. "How could this be?"
"The end of the secret passage leads to the underground parking lot of the 'Nightshade' club," Bai Xiaolian explained. "When you fell, a patrolling security guard found you and brought you here."
"What about Mr. X? Was he caught?" I asked anxiously, trying to struggle out of bed.
"Don't worry, he's already been apprehended," Officer Zhang stepped forward and pressed down on my shoulder, signaling me to calm down. "When we arrived, Mr. X was trying to escape through another exit but was injured by a trap he set up. He has now been subdued."
I finally breathed a sigh of relief, leaning weakly against the headboard as my mind swirled with confusion.
Officer Zhang approached the bed, his expression serious as he asked, "Mr. Li, can you tell me what exactly happened?"
I took a deep breath and recounted everything: how Bai Xiaolian and I discovered Mr. X's secret, how we were chased, how we escaped into the secret passage, and finally how I fell.
After listening to my account, Officer Zhang frowned deeply and fell into thought.
"Mr. Li," after a moment, he looked up at me with a complex expression in his eyes. "How much do you know about Miss Bai's true identity?"
I was taken aback for a moment and turned to look at Bai Xiaolian. She had her head down, her hands tightly twisting the hem of her clothes, her expression complicated and silent.
"Actually..." I opened my mouth but didn't know what to say.
"Mr. Li, I hope you can be honest with us," Officer Zhang said in a serious tone. "Miss Bai's true identity is very important to our police force."
I took a deep breath, looked at Bai Xiaolian, and slowly said, "I... I know she is not Mr. X's... lover..."
Bai Xiaolian suddenly raised her head, her eyes slightly red but she remained silent.
"Then do you know... she is an undercover agent placed next to Mr. X by our police?" Officer Zhang's tone was calm, yet it struck me like a thunderclap in my ears.
I looked at Bai Xiaolian in disbelief; the panic and evasion in her eyes made me understand everything.
Bai Xiaolian took a deep breath, lifted her head, and looked at me with eyes full of apology. "Li Ran, I'm sorry... I... I lied to you before..."
