“Su Wan, she is my aunt's daughter, my cousin that I mentioned to you before.”
This statement echoed in the room like the sound of bells, and for a moment, the large private room fell into a dead silence, as if time had stopped. Only the sound of a phone vibrating in someone's pocket broke the stillness.
Fu Weiheng came back to his senses, pulling out his phone from his coat pocket. The screen displayed an unfamiliar caller. He frowned slightly but eventually answered the call, “Hello.”
“Neil, it's me. Did I wake you?”
A warm and familiar voice came through the phone. Fu Weiheng glanced at Jiang Zhi Yan, who had sat back down on the sofa, then turned to the window, his tone softening, “How could you?” He casually looked at his watch; the hour hand had already passed eleven. “Why are you still awake?”
Su Wan hesitated, “Um... I think I left my phone on your bed…”
Before she could finish her sentence, a clear female voice erupted from the other end: “Oh my gosh! Su Wan, you actually got on Deity's bed?!” Followed by a burst of mischievous laughter.
Fu Weiheng couldn't help but chuckle softly as he gazed out at the night scenery, whispering gently, “Yeah, I saw it. I'll bring it to you tomorrow morning.”
Su Wan felt comforted by his low and gentle voice and obediently replied, “Okay, then you should rest early. Good night.”
However, Fu Weiheng had no intention of hanging up: “Aren't you going to give me a goodnight kiss?”
Su Wan blushed, “... This is Xu Chengyang's phone.”
He laughed again, “Go to sleep.”
After hanging up the phone, Fu Weiheng returned to his usual stern expression and walked back toward the sofa.
Jiang Zhi Yan took a sip of red wine and said leisurely, "Neil, you've changed a lot."
Fu Weiheng remained silent, reaching for the expensive bottle of red wine to pour himself a glass.
Jiang Zhi Yan smiled oddly, "You used to not laugh like a fool..."
Before he could finish, Fu Weiheng shot him a sharp glance.
Jiang Zhi Yan casually swirled the red liquid in his glass and continued, "Neil, don't let her down."
"You don't need to tell me that." Fu Weiheng finished his drink in one gulp, glanced at him, and a mocking smile crept onto his lips. "Jiang Zhi Yan, the sins you committed are yours to bear; don't expect me to pay for them."
"..." Jiang Zhi Yan was speechless. "At least I’m your brother-in-law!"
Fu Weiheng raised an eyebrow, dismissively retorting, "With the things you've done, are you sure my Guan Guan would recognize you as her cousin?" He emphasized 'my Guan Guan.'
"..."
Jiang Zhi Yan felt choked by his words, his handsome face twisting further. He had never managed to get the upper hand over Fu Weiheng... In the end, Jiang Zhi Yan forced himself to suppress his anger and consoled himself internally: I'm a year older than him; I should let him have his way; I should!
Fu Weiheng adjusted his coat, stood up, grabbed the car keys from the table, and left without looking back.
The next day, Su Wan woke up early. When she arrived downstairs at the dormitory, Fu Weiheng had not yet come. She glanced at the time and then at the still chilly road before hurriedly heading toward the convenience store behind the dormitory with her guitar on her back.
When Su Wan returned after buying breakfast, Fu Weiheng was already leaning against the car door, playing with a silver object in his hand, which was her phone.
So, Su Wan quickened her pace, carrying two cups of coffee, two sandwiches, and two tea eggs.
Fu Weiheng looked up and saw Su Wan running towards him with a large bag and small bags while carrying a musical instrument on her back. She was wearing a light pink wool coat over a round-neck sweater, her fair neck exposed to the cold air. He frowned slightly, put his phone back in his pocket, took out a dark gray cashmere scarf from the car, and walked towards her.
Seeing him approach with his cool demeanor, Su Wan unconsciously slowed down for a moment. With his long legs and big strides, he quickly stood in front of her, extending his long arms to wrap the scarf tightly around her neck, his tone slightly stern: "Why aren’t you wearing a scarf?"
Su Wan tilted her neck and pressed the scarf under her chin: "I forgot it in my rush to leave..."
"I'll take care of these things from now on." He casually took the breakfast from her hands and held her hand as they walked towards the Cayenne. "It's cold; you should just wait for me in the dorm."
A warm feeling surged through Su Wan's heart, flowing throughout her body. She raised her other hand and tightly wrapped it around his slender arm: "You’re already busy enough with practice; these are just small matters. I can't always let you do everything. Neil, I'm not a vase." She looked up at him with a smile, "Don't worry; I’ll definitely remember to bring a scarf next time!"
Fu Weiheng knew he couldn't win this argument with her and helplessly shook his head as he unlocked the car and opened the back door for her to place the instrument inside.
Since Su Wan had bought breakfast early in the morning, they had plenty of time. When they arrived at the company, it was still quite early, so Fu Weiheng naturally carried both her and the breakfast directly to the office on the thirty-third floor.
"Fu Weiheng, don’t you have a secretary?" As soon as they exited the elevator, Su Wan looked around at the office door. She had been here a few times but had never seen that rumored beautiful secretary by the president's side, so she curiously asked.
Fu Weiheng opened the door and replied leisurely: "Do you think Zhang Lin isn’t human?"
"..." Su Wan pouted. "I meant one of those beautiful secretaries who stand at the office door all day waiting to be favored by the president."
Fu Weiheng: "..."
What is she really thinking...
"Don't you need a beautiful assistant to help you make an impression?" Su Wan casually continued while fiddling with a tea egg.
Fu Weiheng glanced at her and pulled her phone from his pocket, handing it to her. "Do you think I need one?" Given his capabilities.
"Oh." Su Wan suddenly understood, took the phone, bit into the tea egg, and said matter-of-factly, "Well, your face alone could hold up the whole world."
Fu Weiheng: "..."
In the future, he should avoid letting her spend too much time with Jiang Zhi Yan...
After breakfast, as she came down from the thirty-third floor, it was just about time for work. Everyone else was going from the first floor to the seventeenth floor, while she was coming down from the thirty-third to the seventeenth. So when she stepped out of the elevator, she happened to bump into Wen He, who was coming out of the adjacent elevator.
Seeing the downward arrow on the elevator display, Wen He paused for a moment, confused. "Guan Guan? When did you get here? I didn't see you waiting for the elevator downstairs just now."
"...I was daydreaming and accidentally pressed the wrong floor," Su Wan said nonchalantly.
Wen He thought for a moment and before she could speak, Su Wan was already pulling her toward the Practice Room.
Most of the people were already gathered in the Practice Room. As Wen He was pulled in by Su Wan, she suddenly remembered, "Guan Guan, you were late yesterday, right?"
"...Late?" Su Wan was taken aback for a moment; wasn't yesterday a day off?
"Yes." Wen He sat down in her seat. "Yesterday, it was already time to practice, but Assistant Zhang suddenly said we had a day off."
Su Wan suddenly remembered what Deity had said the night before about taking a day off. She was taken aback; it was specifically for her...
Wen He continued, "I was planning to wait for you to arrive before leaving, but after waiting for more than ten minutes and you still hadn't come, I thought you must have overslept, so I sent you a WeChat message. Didn't you receive it?"
Su Wan recalled vaguely that she seemed to have received such a message, but she hadn't had the chance to click on it and reply before it got pushed down by messages in the group chat.
Feeling somewhat guilty, she looked at her and said, "I saw it... but I forgot to reply..."
"It's okay, I understand!" Wen He waved her hand dismissively, her keen eyes noticing the scarf around Su Wan's neck. With a meaningful smile, she said, "Guan Guan, this scarf doesn't belong to you, does it? Your boyfriend's?"
Su Wan touched the scarf and then remembered she had forgotten to return it to Deity. She shrank her neck and mumbled vaguely, "Um..."
Wen He lifted her chin with an odd look: "Not bad, Guan Guan. This is Burberry's new men's style for this year. Looks like you've got a wealthy boyfriend. Congratulations!"
Su Wan smiled subtly. She could tell that the scarf was expensive; after all, Deity always wore high-end clothing, not to mention a small scarf. Even so, Su Wan never felt that she and Fu Weiheng were from two different worlds. Whether he came from wealth or poverty didn't matter to her.
Fu Weiheng was such a lofty person yet always considerate of her feelings, quietly giving so much and providing her with enough security. Su Wan felt that was enough. She loved Fu Weiheng not because of who he was but because of who she could be in front of him. Therefore, for Fu Weiheng, she was willing to put in effort and sacrifice; she didn't seek to stand high but only wished to truly stand by his side.
...
Time flew by, and soon it was deep winter.
On Saturday, as Su Wan prepared to head out with her violin for lessons at Fu Residence, Fu Weiheng's call came in. She hurriedly adjusted her violin and answered, "Neil, have you arrived?"
"Guan Guan, you don't need to bring your instrument today." Fu Weiheng's voice was slightly hoarse, muffled with a nasal tone. "Just come downstairs; Wei Jin should be arriving soon."
Su Wan was taken aback, her concern evident in her tone. "What's wrong with you?"
He chuckled lightly and coughed a few times. "Just a slight cold. Wei Jin is worried I might catch a chill, so he went to pick you up instead."
Su Wan felt a lump in her throat, unable to find the words. He was always like this, even when he was sick, he still thought of her.
"Guan Guan?" he called softly, unable to suppress another cough.
Su Wan snapped back to reality at the sound of his cough and replied dully, "Neil, I can go by myself..."
"I'm not at ease," he interrupted gently.
Su Wan fiddled with the strap of her instrument case. "Okay, I'll head downstairs now."
"Don't bring your instrument," he reminded her again in a hoarse voice.
"Alright." Su Wan didn't ask further; if he said so, there must be a reason. She just needed to trust him and follow his instructions.
So she put away her instrument and hurried out the door downstairs.
Fu Weijin was already waiting. The bright blue Maserati stood out prominently in the bustling campus. Su Wan glanced around and felt a bit conspicuous... Just then, Fu Weijin turned his head and spotted her, rolling down the window and waving. "Guan Guan, come over."
Su Wan quickly ran over and opened the car door, swiftly climbing inside.
She fastened her seatbelt casually. "Miss Fu, sorry to keep you waiting."
"Still being polite with me, Guan Guan?" Fu Weijin smiled sweetly, her deep and beautiful eyes sparkling. She had just returned from a business trip to Europe with Ye Yinhua a few days ago, and she only learned about Su Wan and Fu Weiheng's relationship from her daughter yesterday. She was extremely delighted and, seeing that Fu Weiheng was unwell today, she immediately took the keys to pick Su Wan up for class.
Su Wan understood what she meant and shyly lowered her head.
Fu Weijin pressed the gas pedal. "Have you eaten?"
Su Wan nodded, then thought of something and quickly said, "Is Fu Weiheng feeling any better? Should I buy him some medicine?"
"Don't worry, the doctor has already come to check on him at home. I made sure he took his medicine before I left," Fu Weijin replied with a smile.
Su Wan nodded in relief. "That's good to hear."
...
Downstairs at the dormitory, Gu Ming watched the Maserati disappear into the distance, feeling as if he had been struck by lightning.
Not long ago, he had inadvertently learned from a classmate of Su Wan's that she had a boyfriend. He found it hard to believe because he had been around Su Wan for years and had never seen her close to any boy, let alone suddenly having a boyfriend. After struggling with his feelings, he decided to confront Su Wan for clarity; regardless of the outcome, at least he could find some peace of mind.
As he reached the bottom of the dormitory building, he spotted Su Wan hurriedly leaving. Anxiously, he glanced at the Maserati not far away. Sure enough, she paused in front of the car, opened the door, and climbed inside. The driver's window was tightly closed, and before he could approach, that royal blue Maserati sped away down the campus road.
In an instant, a thought surged in his mind that left him disheartened: had she always kept him at arm's length just to find a wealthier man to sell herself to?
