"Ye Jing," Cheng Qiuyi said, looking at her with a cold smile. "You really aren't afraid that I might kill you."
She looked down at Ye Jing from above, her pupils dark and devoid of warmth. Ye Jing leaned back into the sofa, resting her hand on the backrest, crossing her legs dismissively. "Qiu Yi, if you really had the guts, you could have taken my life five years ago."
Cheng Qiuyi clenched her fist behind her back, her fingers digging into her palm. "What do you want?"
Ye Jing stood up to face Cheng Qiuyi, reaching out to touch her face. Cheng Qiuyi turned her head to dodge, swinging her fist towards Ye Jing's face. Ye Jing sidestepped and caught Cheng Qiuyi's wrist, twisting it behind her back and pressing her down onto the sofa.
Ye Jing buried her head in Cheng Qiuyi's neck and mocked softly, "Cheng Qiuyi, after all these years, you haven't made any progress at all. It's truly disappointing."
Ye Jing's loose hair brushed against Cheng Qiuyi's collar, making her feel nauseous as she fought to suppress the turmoil in her stomach. Unable to move her upper body, she suddenly exerted force with her lower body, driving her knee upward into Ye Jing's abdomen. Ye Jing winced in pain, loosening her grip just enough for Cheng Qiuyi to escape.
Cheng Qiuyi had put all her strength into that knee strike; even Ye Jing couldn't withstand it. Holding her abdomen and curling up in pain, Ye Jing's face turned pale. Cheng Qiuyi didn't dare let down her guard and retreated a few steps before saying, "Senior Sister, after all these years, you're still so arrogant."
"Cheng Qiuyi..." Ye Jing struggled to sit up, gasping for breath. "You have talent, but it's a pity your useless father has nearly ruined the Cheng Family. You didn't know? Just for that little family business, Cheng Tianhong sold you to me."
"What did you say?"
"I said Cheng Tianhong sold you off. Do you think those two retired old men came today for what? Cheng Qiuyi, they are here to broker a deal between us."
Although Cheng Qiuyi was no longer part of the Cheng Family, she still had some understanding of its current situation. She knew that the Cheng Family was not doing well financially, especially with several newly invested projects suffering losses year after year. She thought the Cheng Family was large enough to last a while longer but didn't expect it to fall apart so quickly. Even more shocking was that Cheng Tianhong could abandon his own bloodline for such a struggling company.
"Ye Jing, we grew up together; I don't want things to get too ugly between us. But if you want to tear our relationship apart, I'm ready to go all the way."
Ye Jing felt a sharp pain in her abdomen as she watched Cheng Qiuyi walk away with a sinister laugh. "Cheng Qiuyi, is there anyone in this world who complements us better than each other? Sooner or later, you will be mine—there's no other option."
Once she left the Cheng Residence, Cheng Qiuyi immediately contacted A-Zhi to investigate the recent activities of the Cheng Family. The Ye Family and the Cheng Family had previously supported each other in business; however, during Cheng Tianhong's generation, signs of rivalry began to emerge. After Ye Jing took over the Ye Family with an iron fist and expanded it significantly, Cheng Tianhong remained a stubborn and incompetent man clinging to his small territory. The Cheng Family had long fallen behind the Ye Family—a fact that Cheng Qiuyi was well aware of. However, no matter how incompetent he was, the Cheng Family shouldn't have collapsed this quickly. She suspected that someone had plotted against Cheng Tianhong—and that someone was likely Ye Jing.
Cheng Qiuyi has never cared about the life or death of Cheng Tianhong or the entire Cheng Family, but this matter involves Ye Jing, which makes it a bit intriguing. Ye Jing is a woman who will stop at nothing to achieve her goals; who knows what crazy things she might do? Moreover, Cheng Qiuyi is no longer the lonely person she once was; she has Liu Shuhan. Liu Shuhan has nothing to do with the grievances of the Cheng Family, so how could Cheng Qiuyi allow her to get hurt in these messy affairs?
Thinking of Liu Shuhan, Cheng Qiuyi's gaze softened. Her current job is quite tough; being in the spotlight all day is not very safe. She should think of a way to get her to quit.
...
Liu Shuhan finished work early today and was excited to ask Cheng Qiuyi what she wanted for dinner when she received a text from Cheng Qiuyi, which left her feeling a bit disappointed. Liu Shuhan had always been curious about what kind of work Cheng Qiuyi did, as she seemed to come and go mysteriously. Sometimes, at three or four in the morning, the lights in Cheng Qiuyi's room would still be on, and she would be inside talking to herself about who knows what.
With Cheng Qiuyi not home, eating alone felt meaningless to Liu Shuhan. She passed by a convenience store and bought some noodles for dinner. When she went upstairs, she noticed that the door to Cheng Qiuyi's apartment was slightly ajar. Feeling cautious, she tiptoed closer to the door and peered through the crack to see what was happening inside.
The living room directly facing the door was empty. As Liu Shuhan slowly opened the door to go in, someone grabbed her pant leg, startling her. She turned around abruptly and saw a boy about ten years old standing beside her. The boy was quite delicate-looking, with narrow eyes and a high nose bridge; his features resembled someone familiar.
"Big sister, you are really pretty," the boy said innocently, reaching his hand toward Liu Shuhan's backside with a sly expression that didn't look like that of a ten-year-old.
It was only then that Liu Shuhan remembered who this boy resembled. This little brat must be Cheng Qiuyi's son! Given his age, it made sense... Liu Shuhan felt like crying; she knew that Cheng Qiuyi wasn't a good person, and now her son was already this big.
Liu Shuhan swatted away the little pervert's hand and took a step back, trying hard not to let her expression twitch. "Little friend, who are you? What's your name?"
The boy puffed out his chest to appear more imposing and proudly said, "My name is Cheng Boming, I am..." Before he could finish, a gentle female voice came from inside the house and interrupted him. "Is your sister back, Boming?"
A woman walked out from inside. Upon seeing Liu Shuhan, she paused for a moment in surprise but quickly regained her composure and smiled at her. "Hello, are you a friend of Qiu Yi?"
The woman looked to be in her twenties; while not exceptionally beautiful, she had an elegant demeanor that made her smile feel refreshing.
"I am a friend of Qiu Yi. I'm staying at her place for a few days," Liu Shuhan replied. "May I ask who you are...?"
The woman's voice and demeanor were gentle, but what she said left Liu Shuhan stunned. "I am Qiu Yi's Mother."
This woman, who looked almost the same age as Cheng Qiuyi, is actually her mother? Liu Shuhan felt unprepared to meet a parent and didn't know where to put her hands or feet. After a long pause, she stammered out, "Auntie... you really... look so young..."
The woman covered her mouth and chuckled lightly, "Qiu Yi is really annoying when it comes to living with others. If she agreed to let you move in, you must have a good relationship. What's your name?"
"Aunt, my name is Liu Shuhan."
The smile on the woman's face froze for a moment as she looked at Liu Shuhan with a strange expression, but then her demeanor returned to normal as she stepped aside to indicate Liu Shuhan could enter the house. "We don't know when Qiu Yi will be back. Have you eaten? Come in and eat with us."
Liu Shuhan smiled awkwardly as she entered the house and helped the woman bring the dishes into the dining room.
Cheng Boming seemed to really like Liu Shuhan; during dinner, he insisted on sitting next to her. His chubby little hand kept reaching for Liu Shuhan's thigh, and only after she discreetly pinched his hand did he settle down.
Liu Shuhan was not very talkative around unfamiliar people and focused on eating quietly. Suddenly, she heard the woman ask, "Miss Liu, how many years have you known Qiu Yi?"
When speaking with an elder, Liu Shuhan quickly raised her head and put down her chopsticks. "It's been over ten years. We were high school classmates, but she went abroad afterward, and we lost contact until recently."
"I see..." The woman pondered for a moment. "It seems Qiu Yi really cares about you. After she returned, she didn't even go home but chose to live with you."
Her words hinted at something deeper, and Liu Shuhan couldn't quite grasp her intentions, so she could only chuckle awkwardly. The woman continued, "Our Qiu Yi is very picky about her lifestyle. If anything doesn't meet her standards regarding food, clothing, or living arrangements, it's not acceptable. She’s usually busy, so when you two are living together, please be mindful of her feelings."
"Don't worry, Aunt. I will take good care of Qiu Yi."
The woman smiled again. "You don't have to call me Aunt anymore; my name is Shen Wenqin. I'm not much older than you. If you don't mind, you can call me Sister Shen."
"No way! Aunt, that would be disrespectful!"
Liu Shuhan felt puzzled; didn't Shen Wenqin say she was Cheng Qiu Yi's mother? How could she now claim they were only a few years apart? Could it be that she really looked that old?
"Shu Han Jie, you're so beautiful! When I grow up, can I marry you?" Cheng Boming said suddenly after being pinched by Liu Shuhan and settling down for a moment.
"Uh..."
Liu Shuhan didn't know how to respond, but Shen Wenqin playfully hit Cheng Boming on the head and scolded him with a laugh, "Then you should eat more and grow up quickly. Sister Shu Han won't look at a little brat like you."
With Cheng Boming causing a ruckus in the middle, the atmosphere at the dining table improved significantly. As they chatted and laughed, the sound of a door lock turning came from the entrance. Shen Wenqin's expression changed, and she nervously gripped the porcelain bowl in her hands. The door opened, and Cheng Qiuyi walked in.
"Shu Han, I'm back..." Cheng Qiuyi's voice trailed off as she coldly looked at Shen Wenqin and said, "What are you doing here?"
Liu Shuhan felt uncomfortable throughout the meal. Finally, when Cheng Qiuyi returned, she put down her bowl and walked over to her. "Qiu Yi, you finally came back. Have you eaten?"
Cheng Boming had never seen Cheng Qiuyi before, but being a clever child, he knew his mother had something to ask of her. He dropped his chopsticks and ran over, hugging Cheng Qiuyi's leg tightly. "Sister Qiu Yi, I'm Cheng Boming, I'm your little brother."
Cheng Qiuyi kicked Cheng Boming away in disgust and said to Shen Wenqin, "Who told you to come here?"
Cheng Boming was young and spoiled by his parents since childhood. Although Cheng Qiuyi held back her strength with that kick, he still fell to the ground. Having always been pampered as the little master of the Cheng Family, he had never experienced such treatment before. Sitting on the floor, he cried out, "You hit me! I'm going to tell Dad and have him deal with you! I'll make sure to... kick you out of the Cheng Family!"
Liu Shuhan found it hard to understand why Cheng Qiuyi would hit a child. Unable to bear seeing him cry, she pulled Cheng Boming into her arms to comfort him. "Boming, don't cry. Your sister didn't mean it; don't cry..."
Then she froze, speechless as she pushed Cheng Boming away. That little brat had just taken advantage of the moment to touch her chest! No wonder Cheng Qiuyi disliked him; he deserved it.
Cheng Boming was only nine years old. If adults didn't say anything, how would a child even understand what it meant to be "kicked out of the Cheng Family"? He had no idea how long this family of three had coveted the shares of the Cheng Family in his hands; even a child his age knew they wanted to drive her out.
Cheng Qiuyi sneered and pointed at the open door. "Shen Wenqin, take your son and get out."
