"Look at Qiu Yi's nervousness; the call just now must have been from Miss Liu," Ye Jing said, a smile still on her face as she spoke to Cheng Qiuyi, though her gaze kept wandering over to Yuan Ying.
Cheng Qiuyi showed an awkward expression, stirring her coffee and not responding. Yuan Ying, who had just begun to show some smiles today, now looked indifferent. "I've met Miss Liu as well; she's charming and cute. Miss Cheng, you shouldn't let her down."
"Miss Yuan, please don't misunderstand," Cheng Qiuyi quickly explained. "I’m only with her because she keeps pestering me! I..."
"Alright, Qiu Yi, Miss Yuan is just joking. Look how nervous you are," Ye Jing interrupted Cheng Qiuyi's words, pretending to smooth things over. "Miss Yuan, Qiu Yi and I grew up together; I know her thoughts best. I, Ye Jing, can assure you that Qiu Yi's feelings for you are absolutely genuine."
Yuan Ying frowned. "You don't need to worry about my personal matters, Ms. Ye. However, I've already wasted too much time in this country. When do you plan to resolve the mess that is the Cheng Family?"
Ye Jing looked at Cheng Qiuyi. "The Cheng Family is indeed tied to Qiu Yi; this matter still requires her approval."
Cheng Qiuyi put down the small silver spoon in her hand, pinching the bridge of her nose wearily. "I'm thoroughly annoyed by the Cheng Family. Ms. Ye, if you see the opportunity is right, just go ahead and take action without worrying about me."
Ye Jing nodded. "Then I'll start handling this tomorrow."
Cheng Qiuyi was preoccupied with Liu Shuhan and left after discussing plans with them. She was teased by Ye Jing once more, and as she wiped the cold sweat from her forehead in embarrassment, she didn't forget to apologize to Yuan Ying before leaving.
Ye Jing and Yuan Ying drank coffee for a while until Cheng Qiuyi's figure appeared downstairs at the Ye Family residence. Yuan Ying then asked curiously, "Ms. Ye, since you want to win over Cheng Qiuyi, why are you acting as a matchmaker between me and her?"
Ye Jing smiled. "Qiu Yi is currently at a peak moment in her life; I've hurt her deeply in the past. If I approach her now, I'm afraid she will hate me for a lifetime."
"So you want her to be alienated from everyone?"
Ye Jing nodded, "That's right. After this matter is settled, the forces in C City will be reshuffled. As long as we direct all the blame towards Qiu Yi, she will have nowhere to turn. I can then step in to help, and it will be much easier."
Yuan Ying felt a bit of admiration for Ye Jing's ruthless determination to achieve her goals. To get Cheng Qiuyi, Ye Jing had orchestrated such a large scheme, treating the entire C City as her chess pieces. No wonder Cheng Qiuyi had previously called her a madwoman.
Yuan Ying shrugged, "Your grievances with Miss Cheng have nothing to do with me. I'm a businessman; just don't forget our cooperation."
...
Cheng Qiuyi stood at her doorstep, sniffing her clothes repeatedly to confirm that there was no strange smell on her. Only then did she anxiously open the door and step inside. She felt wronged; she hadn't done anything wrong, so why did she feel so guilty?
Liu Shuhan couldn't cook due to an injury on her right hand. Usually, when Cheng Qiuyi was home, they would eat out together. Tonight, Liu Shuhan had no appetite and hastily stuffed a few pieces of bread as dinner. She was watching a TV drama when she heard the door open and immediately got up to greet her. "Qiu Yi, you're back."
"Mm." Cheng Qiuyi's gaze flickered. "I went out for something this afternoon and came back a bit late. Did you eat?"
"I've eaten." Liu Shuhan reached out to take Cheng Qiuyi's coat, but Cheng Qiuyi was very sensitive and quickly pulled her hand back. "Your hand is inconvenient; I can manage it myself."
Liu Shuhan's hand paused in the air for a moment before she awkwardly withdrew it and returned to the sofa to watch TV. Cheng Qiuyi realized her reaction was inappropriate but didn't know how to explain it, so she decided to put the coat in the bathroom and take a shower.
Liu Shuhan stared blankly at the TV, not focusing at all. Her ears perked up slightly when she heard water running from the bathroom. Quietly, she got up and rummaged through the casual blazer that Cheng Qiuyi had worn earlier.
This blazer was Liu Shuhan's favorite outfit on Cheng Qiuyi; it had a fitted design that made Cheng Qiuyi's waist look incredibly slim—almost as if one hand could wrap around it completely. It was hard to find any clues on the black fabric, but Liu Shuhan still discovered something in the pocket.
There was a fine hair stuck there, so thin that it could easily be overlooked. Liu Shuhan carefully picked up the delicate strand of hair and held it up to the light for a closer look—it was long brown hair with a slight curl. Suddenly, she thought of Yuan Ying.
"Cheng Qiuyi, if you have nothing to hide, why are you lying?"
But in Liu Shuhan's mind, Cheng Qiuyi was not that kind of person. Cheng Qiuyi was straightforward; how could she do such a thing?
Liu Shuhan couldn't understand. She wanted to ask Cheng Qiuyi, but how could she? "Cheng Qiuyi, are you seeing another woman behind my back?" What if she wasn't? After all, a single hair couldn't represent much.
She put her clothes away and returned to the sofa to watch TV, pretending that nothing had happened.
When Cheng Qiuyi came out after taking a shower, she sat down next to Liu Shuhan to watch TV. Liu Shuhan's body stiffened, and she jumped up as if her backside were on fire. "I'm thirsty; I’ll go get a glass of water." After saying that, she fled into the kitchen. Cheng Qiuyi glanced at her coat hanging by the entrance; she distinctly remembered hanging it with the pockets facing inward. Worriedly, she looked towards Liu Shuhan, unsure if she should explain.
Cheng Qiuyi had been very busy these past few days. After watching TV, Liu Shuhan lay in bed playing on her phone while Cheng Qiuyi was still at the computer reviewing documents. Liu Shuhan took a glance; the screen was filled with dense English text that made her dizzy, so she put down her phone and went to sleep.
Liu Shuhan closed her eyes and had a chaotic dream where she saw Cheng Qiuyi standing side by side with Yuan Ying, disdainfully saying to her, "Liu Shuhan, I don’t want you anymore." She wanted to chase after Cheng Qiuyi to ask why, but branches extending from all directions ensnared her tightly, leaving her unable to move.
Liu Shuhan woke up in a cold sweat and realized that Cheng Qiuyi had already gotten into bed, wrapping her arms around herself. Liu Shuhan sighed in relief; she hadn’t yet emerged from the nightmare. Gently prying open Cheng Qiuyi's arms, she lay down far away from her but found it impossible to fall asleep again.
Liu Shuhan felt some movement from Cheng Qiuyi's side; her arm crossed over Liu Shuhan's chest again. Frustrated, Liu Shuhan pushed Cheng Qiuyi away and shifted closer to the edge of the bed.
"Shu Han, I'm sorry," Cheng Qiuyi said with a sigh in a soft voice.
Liu Shuhan turned her back to Cheng Qiuyi and remained silent.
Cheng Qiuyi continued, "I met Ye Jing and Yuan Ying today."
"I know." Liu Shuhan's voice was a bit muffled.
"I know you know." Liu Shuhan's worries were always written on her face, and as soon as Cheng Qiuyi returned, she noticed something was off with her expression. Cheng Qiuyi could say a thousand sweet words to cheer Liu Shuhan up; Liu Shuhan was soft-hearted and would believe any trivial excuse if Cheng Qiuyi acted a little spoiled or weak. But Cheng Qiuyi didn't want to do that.
"Cheng Qiuyi, I'm not as good-looking as Yuan Ying, nor do I have her talents or abilities. Don't worry, if you really like her, I won't stand in your way." Liu Shuhan recognized that she had no other advantages and had some self-awareness. Love is all about mutual feelings; if Cheng Qiuyi no longer had that sentiment, it would be pointless for her to cling to her.
When she was with Cheng Qiuyi, she never had the extravagant hope of being together forever. It was Cheng Qiuyi's kindness that made her lose her sense of proportion. She was just an ordinary person; why should Cheng Qiuyi spend her whole life with her?
"I don't like her!" Cheng Qiuyi turned Liu Shuhan's body around. "Shu Han, my situation with Yuan Ying is complicated and can't be explained in a moment, but believe me, there’s nothing between us!"
Liu Shuhan smiled bitterly; Cheng Qiuyi's expression was exactly like those husbands in dramas after cheating. "Cheng Qiuyi, I'm just an ordinary person. You're so clever and meticulous; how can I trust you?"
There are no situations that can't be clarified in this world, only things people choose not to say.
"I..."
Cheng Qiuyi's phone vibrated at an inopportune moment; it was A-Zhi. She hesitated with her thumb hovering over the hang-up button. A call from A-Zhi at midnight must be serious. Cheng Qiuyi looked at Liu Shuhan awkwardly, who nodded slightly to urge her to answer.
Cheng Qiuyi pressed the call button. "A-Zhi, what's going on?"
"Miss, Shen Wenqin has committed suicide at the police station."
"What?" Cheng Qiuyi nearly jumped out of bed. "What's the situation now?"
"She was discovered in time and sent to the hospital; she is now out of danger, but will need to rest there for a while."
Cheng Qiuyi sneered, "Let her make a scene. The Cheng Family is almost finished; how much longer can she keep this up?"
As soon as she finished speaking, an elderly voice came from the phone, "Qiu Yi, it's Grandpa."
Cheng Qiuyi was taken aback. "Grandpa? How come..."
"It's been a long time since I've seen you; I've missed you a bit. You're busy with important matters, but remember to come see this old man when you have some free time," Old Master Cheng said, handing the phone back to A-Zhi and trembling as he walked with his cane.
A-Zhi spoke awkwardly into the phone, "Miss, I'm currently at the hospital; the old man is right here..."
"It's fine," Cheng Qiuyi said, pinching the bridge of her nose. "If Grandpa wants to see me, I should at least give him face. Help me pick out a gift; I'll go visit him in a few days."
Cheng Qiuyi had been very busy these past few days, often staying up until one or two in the morning and then getting up early to take Liu Shuhan to work, leaving dark circles under her eyes.
Liu Shuhan couldn't bear to blame her and sighed, "It's getting late; you should get some sleep. We'll talk about anything tomorrow."
Cheng Qiuyi wanted to say something but ultimately just lay silently in bed. Habitually, she reached out to hug Liu Shuhan, but as her hand almost touched Liu Shuhan's shoulder, the other person seemed to sense it and shrank back. Cheng Qiuyi's hand froze in mid-air, her fingers slowly curling into a fist before retracting into the darkness.
The two of them lay back-to-back, unable to sleep through the night.
