"That's insane! You can't just leave without saying anything. I was out there searching for you with wet hair and almost froze to death!"
Tang Shangri-La Duo walked into the room with her hair looking like a bird's nest, and upon learning that Summer Melody had just gone out for a walk with some people, she couldn't stop complaining.
Summer Melody followed her inside and quietly said, "I'm sorry. I won't do it again."
Tang Shangri-La Duo was momentarily speechless. Normally, when they argued in the dorm, they would be at each other's throats, but this time, with Summer Melody admitting her fault right away, Tang Shangri-La Duo found herself without any anger to express.
Sulianlin was also a bit shocked and nudged Zhou Yao, "Did Summer Melody really not retort?"
Zhou Yao shrugged, looking equally puzzled, then called into the bathroom, "Shangri-La Duo, stop washing your hair. Be careful of altitude sickness."
Summer Melody asked, "Zhou Yao, where are you going?"
Zhou Yao replied, "To borrow a hairdryer."
Summer Melody followed him out and said, "Yao Yao, I was just confused and spoke too quickly. I'm sorry. If you see Boss Luo, please apologize for me."
Seeing her pitiful expression, Zhou Yao couldn't help but touch her face and said, "It's okay. Just get some sleep. Go on in now. Next time, don't run off with others, alright? — By the way, let Tang Shangri-La Duo dry her hair with a towel first; I'll bring the hairdryer in a bit."
Zhou Yao went downstairs to the Common Area where Luo Yi was about to turn off the last light.
"Need something?"
"Just borrowing a hairdryer."
Luo Yi found a hairdryer for her and said, "It's best to wash your hair during the day."
"Okay."
The surroundings were quiet, with dim light from a single lamp. Just as he was about to turn off the light, Zhou Yao said, "Thank you for today."
"No need. I didn't want any trouble in the inn either," he replied, still expressionless.
Zhou Yao thought about how he had kicked the door earlier; that explosive power was not something an ordinary man could possess. Even a strong push from a man of the same age wouldn't budge him at all.
Zhou Yao said, "My friend asked me to say sorry to you; she was too impulsive just now."
Luo Yi didn't respond, clearly not taking the matter to heart.
Zhou Yao asked again, "Were those people together?"
"Maybe they were traveling together," Luo Yi leaned against the counter, opened a cigarette box, took out a cigarette, and noticed her looking at him. He casually offered, "Want one?"
"Yes."
He raised his eyebrows in surprise.
This did not escape Zhou Yao's notice: "You ask if someone wants it but don't actually want to give it?"
"A good student shouldn't smoke," he said.
"How did you know I was a student?" Zhou Yao asked.
"Identification card."
"..." Zhou Yao felt her question was quite silly for a moment. She remembered they had been smoking together by the cliff earlier; clearly, he had no impression of it.
Luo Yi said, "What are you doing here?"
"Geological Survey."
He nodded, tapped the cigarette in the ashtray, and didn't ask any more questions.
"Are there many people like them in the inn?" Zhou Yao asked.
"If you go to Lijiang or Lhasa, it's even messier."
Zhou Yao knew that. She had traveled to many places and seen too many people like that. However, this was just one side of the coin; she would always encounter interesting people, depending on luck. For example, she thought meeting Luo Yi was quite nice.
But as the cigarette came to an end, he extinguished it in the ashtray and said, "Get some rest early."
"Good night." Zhou Yao tossed her cigarette next to his and took the hairdryer back with her.
He watched her until she successfully crossed the hall and went up the stairs.
Then he turned off the light.
It was pitch black.
Zhou Yao suddenly thought of something and turned to call out to him:
"Hey!"
"Yeah?"
"The door that got kicked in, put it on my tab. After all, it's my friend."
"No need."
He walked away, closing a door behind him.
...
As the night deepened, Zhou Yao gazed at the moon outside the window, unable to sleep. There was something off about the moon in the sky; she missed someone. She wanted to talk and chat with him, just sitting by the bar.
They had only just met. What a joke, she turned over in bed.
On the couch beside her, Summer Melody also turned over.
Zhou Yao was taken aback; could she not sleep either?
Just then, Sulianlin lowered her voice in the night: "Yao Yao, Xiaoyun, are you guys asleep?"
Tang Shangri-La Duo sighed, "I can't sleep."
A few seconds later, four voices in the blankets burst into giggles.
"Let's chat at night!" Sulianlin suggested excitedly.
Summer Melody said, "I agree."
Tang Shangri-La Duo struggled with reason, "No. I want to sleep; I have to get up early tomorrow."
"Get up for what!" Sulianlin replied, "We won't get up tomorrow; what can they do to us?"
"Sulianlin, I didn't see this side of you," Zhou Yao remarked.
"Comrade," Tang Shangri-La Duo admonished, "Can we not fall behind? Can we have some spirit? Those three PhDs are being very polite to us little folks; let's not drag them down. Go to sleep early! Especially you, Sulianlin, the professional lagger!"
"Let Yao Yao lag; anyway, Lin Jinyan senior likes her, and she just has to mention him for him to agree," Sulianlin said.
"Are you trying to get yourself killed?" Zhou Yao threw a pillow at her.
"By the way, Yao Yao, do you like Lin Jinyan senior?" Tang Shangri-La Duo asked.
Sulianlin: "Look at this person; just now they said not to chat. Now their gossiping heart is burning fiercely."
Tang Shangri-La Duo: "Shut up."
"Summer Melody" also asked, "Yao Yao?"
"Zhou Yao" was speechless: "Lin Jinyan is my dad's prized disciple. I've known him since childhood; he's like an older brother to me, so of course he takes care of me."
"How many siblings end up as couples," "Tang Shangri-La Duo" said softly.
"Zhou Yao": "Get lost."
"Tang Shangri-La Duo" was quiet for a moment, then sighed lightly: "I think men like the senior brothers are better."
"Summer Melody": "Why do you say that all of a sudden?"
"Tang Shangri-La Duo" turned over: "Just look at the group of people we met today. They seem easy to get along with, but I don't like them that way."
"Sulianlin" seemed to find a kindred spirit: "Right! I don't like them either, but I didn't say it earlier. I was afraid you'd think I'm being difficult."
"Zhou Yao" glanced at "Summer Melody," who was curled up under the blanket and didn't say anything. "Zhou Yao" reached out to pat her head, and she held onto her hand in return.
"Tang Shangri-La Duo" said: "I think they're fake. The way they talk about the girls they meet on the road makes me uncomfortable. Those few girls are the same, laughing at others with them, their words are harsh. I can never feel close to people who speak cruelly."
"I feel the same," "Sulianlin" said. "They brag about how rich they are, sending their lovers dozens of Hermès bags, talking about how big their companies are in Vancouver, how much tax they pay. Hello, the capital of Canada is Ottawa, okay? — They each talk about their grand ideals and bright futures, and then ask me if I want to go out with them alone."
"Zhou Yao" remained silent.
There are too many people living boring lives.
The reason Luo Yi does not drive them away is simple; it reflects the true existence of the people coming and going.
The travelogue describes it well: pilgrimage, cleansing the soul; it attracts countless lost individuals who come in droves, lonely people arriving in groups, escaping with their eyes closed, indulging in a dreamlike state, fully releasing their most glamorous exteriors and their ugliest truths, only to return to their chaotic lives.
After a long while, Summer Melody softly said, "Yes. It's better to have boys like the senior brothers."
Tang Shangri-La Duo replied, "Yeah, not thinking about trivial matters or engaging in false pretenses, just doing things earnestly and seriously. I really admire that. Honest and upright boys are the best."
Summer Melody whispered, "Girls are the same. — That's why I envy Yao Yao and Duo Duo so much."
Tang Shangri-La Duo was surprised, "Huh? Me? I envy Yao Yao too."
Summer Melody lowered her voice even more, "I'm so much worse than you. In terms of studies... and other aspects... I didn't attend a good school like you did; I haven't learned as much."
"Take your time. Life is still long," Zhou Yao said. "Learning has no limits."
Summer Melody replied, "Yeah, I know."
Zhou Yao continued, "I also like Tang Shangri-La Duo. Last time I went into the lab and saw her standing next to the isotope analyzer recording data. At that moment, sunlight happened to shine in; wow, I thought she looked so beautiful."
Tang Shangri-La Duo: "Oh dear, you're getting more and more cheesy. —"
Zhou Yao: "Of course, it was just that one moment of beauty."
"Go die!" Tang Shangri-La Duo.
Summer Melody smiled.
Tang Shangri-La Duo said, "I like Sulianlin, carefree and foolish."
"......"
"Sulianlin, Tang Shangri-La Duo is insulting you."
"......"
"......"
The three of them simultaneously lifted their heads from the blankets. Sulianlin was quietly lying in bed, breathing evenly.
The three of them: "......"
Tang Shangri-La Duo: "Damn, he actually fell asleep first."
Zhou Yao was also sleepy and turned over: "Going to sleep."
Summer Melody agreed: "We have to get up early tomorrow."
Tang Shangri-La Duo exploded: "You guys woke me up, and now you're just leaving me hanging?"
Zhou Yao muttered, "Good night, Tang Shangri-La Duo."
The night before, Ji Yu asked the girls if any adjustments were needed, and everyone said no. However, the next morning, all three boys collectively showed signs of discomfort with the high-altitude environment, so they decided to take a day to adjust.
Zhou Yao, on the other hand, was completely unaffected.
After washing her hair, Zhou Yao used a hairdryer and walked down the stairs with a light step.
But the one at the front desk was the Front Desk Girl; Luo Yi was not there. Zhou Yao felt a bit disappointed, returned the hairdryer to her, and asked, "Where's your Boss?"
The girl pointed outside: "In the yard."
Zhou Yao walked to the door and saw Luo Yi getting on a motorcycle and putting on his helmet.
Zhou Yao ran up to him: "Where are you going?"
"Down the mountain." He slightly raised his head to fasten the helmet strap and didn't have time to look at her. Zhou Yao noticed his prominent Adam's apple.
"Going to town?" Zhou Yao asked.
"Yeah."
"What for?"
"To buy something."
"Perfect, take me with you," Zhou Yao said firmly.
Luo Yi paused for a moment, looked over, and asked, "What are you going for?"
"My hair tie broke, I need to go to town to buy a new one," Zhou Yao lied without batting an eye.
Luo Yi replied, "I'll bring it back for you."
"No way. You won't get it right."
Luo Yi questioned, "How can I not get it right? It's just a hair tie, isn't it?"
"Everyone has different amounts of hair—it's just that the thickness varies," Zhou Yao explained quickly, forming a circle with her thumb and index finger to illustrate. "Some ties work perfectly for others. But for me, if I wrap it twice, it's too loose; if I wrap it three times, it's not enough. So, I have to go myself."
Luo Yi stared at her, unflinching as she finished her lengthy explanation, and calmly said, "Your hair seems quite difficult to manage."
Zhou Yao lightly tossed her long hair and smiled, "There's no helping it; my hair is the most proud part of me."
The morning sun shone on her hair, messy yet alluring. Just a moment ago, when she slightly tossed her hair in the wind, Luo Yi seemed to catch a faint scent wafting from her locks.
He watched her for a few seconds before taking off his helmet, getting off the motorcycle, and heading back inside. Zhou Yao was unsure what he was doing and waited in place, playing with her hair with her fingers. After a short while, he returned with another helmet in hand and tossed it to her.
Zhou Yao quickly caught it and hugged it close.
She swiftly put on the helmet as he mounted the bike and turned to her, saying, "Don't sit sideways; you'll fall off."
"Mm." Just as Zhou Yao was about to get in the car, he remembered something. "Hey—"
"What is it?" He turned his head, habitually furrowing his brow.
"What about my postcard?" Zhou Yao asked.
"Not forgotten." He shifted his gaze back to the front.
Thinking that he remembered her matters made Zhou Yao's heart bloom with joy.
She placed her hand on his shoulder and immediately felt the strength in his shoulder blades. Her heart fluttered, and she nimbly stepped onto the footboard, straddling the motorcycle, her thigh boldly pressed against his leg.
Looking up, she saw three girls crowded at the second-floor window, silently watching her. She winked at them and blew a playful kiss.
The motorcycle sped out of the yard.
Summer Melody leaned against the window and sighed, "I really wish I could have such good luck with the opposite sex like Zhou Yao."
Sulianlin was brushing her teeth, mumbling, "Without her face, she wouldn't have that kind of courage."
Tang Shangri-La Duo looked enlightened, as if she had solved a major research problem. "I wondered why she was in such a hurry to wash her hair early in the morning and even washed it twice."
