Before I could run a few steps, I suddenly heard rustling and heavy breathing behind me, getting closer and closer. I could feel my heart racing; I never expected such a quick reaction!
In a panic, I turned around quickly. Just a glance revealed a pair of cold, green eyes staring at me from the darkness. In the dim light, I saw 'Songzi' twisted into a strange and eerie posture. A cold wind blew against my back, and before I could turn back, something tightened around my neck, dragging me forcefully to the ground.
My neck was constricted to the point where I could hardly breathe. My feet desperately pushed against the ground, trying to prevent myself from being choked to death. I struggled to pull at whatever was around my neck; it felt sticky and cold. I was using all my strength to grab and claw at it, feeling my nails dig into my flesh. Perhaps I had hurt him because the grip around my neck tightened even more. The air coming in was less than what was going out. Just as I thought I might suffocate, everything went black, and I lost consciousness.
When I opened my eyes again, an even stronger stench hit me. My hand felt something cool, and then a slippery object slid across it. I turned my head in shock and saw a snake as thick as my wrist. Startled, I flung the snake away and sat up.
"Feng Zi, you finally woke up—ugh." Wuma You had just started to speak when Sudai covered his mouth with a fierce look and said, "Shut up!"
"Fucking..." I couldn't help but curse, my eyes wide in disbelief.
I found myself in a cave the size of a room. To my horror, this was neither a snake den nor a place for corpses; it was a realm of snakes and corpses!
All around me, even where I sat, were bodies and snakes! The corpses glowed with an eerie green light, allowing me to see their decaying limbs and damp, sticky black hair clearly. Dirty black water corroded the tattered cloth stuck to the bodies, making it impossible to distinguish between clothing and limbs...
I had never seen a corpse in my life before today; now I was surrounded by them! The bodies were piled haphazardly together, their purple faces showing pairs of unblinking eyes. It suddenly reminded me of garbage piled carelessly in a trash bin...
My hands and feet felt icy cold, and chills ran down my spine. Staring at everything around me felt like being in hell; the corpses treated as garbage while the "garbage" became nests and food for snakes... Although I had considered that working in this field would mean frequent encounters with corpses, I never imagined I'd face such a horrifying scene right away. My heart sank completely.
My stomach churned violently; unable to hold it back any longer, I covered my chest and retched to the side. I swear, it wasn't intentional!
After vomiting until nothing came out, I wiped my mouth only to feel a sudden chill on my body. Looking up sharply, I saw not far ahead a gigantic black snake lying there! Hidden in the darkness were its cold green eyes staring directly at me. My brow furrowed tightly because that snake's face was Songzi's face...
Its eyes remained cold, radiating an unsettling temperature that made something inside me shatter. Sitting there dazedly with damp sensations creeping over me felt very chilling; I dared not look beneath me or move at all until after some time when the giant snake rested its head on a corpse and closed its eyes.
Meanwhile, countless snakes continued to wriggle over the corpses around us...
"We need to get out of here quickly," Sudai nudged me gently and whispered.
I snapped back to reality and nodded lightly in agreement before quietly asking, "How do we leave?"
I had just finished asking when Wuma You tugged at the clothes of Sudai and me, saying, "This might be an ancient tomb. Let's look around; there should be some mechanisms!"
An ancient tomb!?
Sudai and I exchanged glances, unsure whether to believe this troublemaker, who seemed completely unreliable. Wuma You didn't say much more and began to nervously search under the surrounding corpses. Seeing this, I could only let out a silent sigh, forcibly suppressing my fear, and started to search for mechanisms as quietly as possible.
Glancing at the Human-Faced Serpent resting at the cave entrance, I realized my worldview was beginning to change...
I didn't know if Songzi had turned into a snake or if the snake had turned into Songzi; it was also possible... they had merged into one...
Right now, I truly knew nothing. My mind was almost blank, only thinking about finding a mechanism quickly, and then... then...
Suddenly—
At a critical moment, someone unexpectedly let out a fart. I jumped in surprise and noticed that all the little snakes in the cave began to stir. Even the Human-Faced Serpent blocking the entrance lifted its head and stared coldly at us.
I froze for a moment; this was no joke—so many snakes could easily drown us!
"Go to hell!" Sudai glared fiercely at Wuma You, his anger practically wishing he could kick him to death. Of course, Wuma You was now sweating profusely; the more nervous he got, the more mistakes he made!
Oh no, they're coming!
Seeing the snakes in the cave slithering toward us, goosebumps instantly covered my body. If I were to be drowned by these snakes, I might as well just smash my head against something for a quicker end. In a panic, I scrambled up and began to feel around for mechanisms, hoping to touch something lucky.
But the corpses here were piled high like mountains, and with a nest of snakes around, if there were indeed any mechanisms, they would be buried under these bodies and snakes. My last hope began to fade away, and despair started to creep in...
As those ugly and cold snakes crawled onto me, I frantically swatted them away. Meanwhile, I saw that the thin guy and Sudai were also jumping around in a panic. Perhaps this behavior completely angered the large snake; it was no longer just observing but slowly slithering toward us.
At that moment, aside from me who had mentally prepared myself, Wu Xiaoshou and Sudai were utterly stunned. Earlier, due to the lighting conditions, they hadn't seen it while it lay at the cave entrance. But now they must have seen it too—the face of that snake...
"Songzi?" Sudai was stunned...
"Is he really the person you are looking for? How can it be a snake?" Wu Xiaoshou asked in astonishment.
"Fortunately, Song A is not here." I frowned, wondering if he could accept seeing his brother in such a state—
"Hurry up and find the mechanism, quickly! Otherwise, we will really have to go down and accompany these dead bodies today!" Sudai soon regained his composure.
It's better to avoid trouble. Finding the mechanism is the priority. So, the three of us ran around the snake den, feeling around. Strangely enough, although these small snakes were crawling all over me, they showed no intention of biting me. Could it be that they don't bite living beings? Or is there some other mystery?
"I can't take it anymore. With so many corpses here, even if there is a mechanism, it's completely blocked. It could take ages to find it!" On the other side, Wu Xiaoshou said despairingly while fiddling with the corpses.
"Is there no other way?" I was sweating anxiously. Looking at the threatening warning in the big snake's eyes, my body trembled uncontrollably as I dared not move while staring at "Songzi."
At that moment, Sudai urgently said, "Songzi, I am Sudai, and he is Feng Zi. Don't you recognize us?" He pointed at me.
The big snake looked at us with cold and ruthless green eyes. Its enormous mouth, capable of swallowing a person whole, opened wide, revealing two long fangs exuding a chilling aura. Suddenly, the big snake moved! It reared back, and that human face lunged toward us. Instinctively, I dodged to the side and barely escaped.
"Get out of the way!" I heard Wuma You shout loudly. I looked up just in time to see the snake with Songzi's face attacking—its target was Sudai! I was about to rush over when unexpectedly Sudai rolled away gracefully and smoothly avoided it.
At that moment, Wu Xiaoshou screamed and suddenly threw something at me. I couldn't dodge in time and ended up tumbling into the snake's nest, feeling utterly embarrassed as a foul stench overwhelmed me. I felt nauseous and nearly fainted! But I didn't want to give up; giving up meant death. In my panic, I scrambled on all fours. Just as I managed to get up, I suddenly felt something grab my ankle. Losing my balance, I fell back into the pile of corpses and snakes again. When I lifted my face, a cold face suddenly came close to my eyes...
