After the class ended, Zhang Rui absentmindedly packed up his books and notebooks, thinking about going to the Mystery Research Club later - one of the few places in the high school that he found some value and enjoyment in. He looked forward to discussing supernatural and mysterious things with a few like-minded people.
He walked out of the classroom, as usual avoiding the crowds and gazes, like a gray fish silently swimming through the school's ocean.
"Hey, Zhang Rui, come over here," not far away, Li Junxian poked his head out, wearing a smiling expression.
Zhang Rui furrowed his brow, but still walked over. He knew that Li Junxian was a student with quite a bit of influence in the school, and getting involved with him would likely lead to more trouble for himself.
"Where are you going? The Mystery Research Club? Haha, what a weirdo," Li Junxian sneered at the club emblem on his backpack.
"It's none of your business, move aside," Zhang Rui felt a bit annoyed, but he still tried to stay calm.
"Hey, why are you in such a hurry to leave? Do you have some mysterious thing to do?" Li Junxian laughed even more and reached out to stop him.
"Oh, look who it is, thinking about something important?" Li Junxian sneered and lightly pushed the backpack on Zhang Rui's back with his finger. In that instant, the zipper of the backpack burst open due to the force, and books, notebooks, and a pencil case all fell out and scattered on the ground.
"Ah, what a fool, can't even hold onto a backpack properly," Li Junxian chuckled, then stepped on Zhang Rui's math book, leaving it uneven and dented.
Zhang Rui hung his head, his eyes slightly red, his lips trembling. He tightly clenched his fists, trying to control his emotions. He knew that any resistance in this situation would only make things worse.
"Haha, look at this guy, he's like a mouse seeing a cat!" Li Junxian's friends also joined in mocking Zhang Rui, with one of them not only nudging Zhang Rui's scattered books with his toes, but also kicking his pencil case, causing pencils and erasers to scatter all over the floor.
"Aren't you interested in mysterious and supernatural things? Why don't you use your mysterious powers to make these books fly back into your backpack?" Li Junxian continued to mock, completely disregarding Zhang Rui's feelings.
Zhang Rui felt deep shame and powerlessness. He could only silently pick up the books and stationery from the ground, put them back into his already broken school bag, and quickly leave this painful place.
Just as Zhang Rui bent down to pick up the last pencil, suddenly a clear and bright female voice pierced the air.
"Enough, is this what you're doing interesting?"
Everyone's attention was drawn to a slender figure with a head of elegant curly black hair standing there. She was wearing a school uniform, but even in such a simple outfit, it couldn't hide her naturally exuding temperament. Her eyes were sharp and bright, like a mirror reflecting inner strength. This was Lin Yating, Zhang Rui's classmate, and the only person he dared to call a friend.
Li Junxian and his companions were suppressed by Lin Yating's aura, as if they were restrained by an invisible force, and for a moment, they didn't know how to respond. "Lin Yating, what does this have to do with you?" Li Junxian attempted to cover his unease with sarcasm, but his voice involuntarily lowered.
"When my friends are treated unfairly, it is definitely my concern," Lin Yating said firmly, her eyes filled with unwavering determination. This simple statement seemed to possess a magical power, instantly solidifying the atmosphere. Li Junxian and his companions were clearly intimidated by her aura, and for a moment, they didn't know how to react.
Lin Yating walked over and picked up the scattered books and stationery on the ground, then gracefully handed them back to Zhang Rui. Every movement exuded a calm and confident demeanor, as if she could naturally control any situation.
Li Junxian was speechless. He glared at Zhang Rui and Lin Yating before hurriedly leading his group away. As he passed by, he said to Zhang Rui, "Thank your brave princess for saving you! Weirdo!"
Lin Yating gave Li Junxian a glare, then turned to ask Zhang Rui, "Are you okay?" Her voice was full of concern.
"Thanks to you, Yating, I'm fine," Zhang Rui's voice contained a hint of barely perceptible annoyance.
Lin Yating noticed his change in mood and furrowed her brows slightly, "Are you not happy to see me here?"
Zhang Rui swallowed and glanced at Lin Yating, then said, "Thank you, Yating. I have to go, the club activities are about to start."
After speaking, he turned and walked towards the school's club room, his figure gradually disappearing at the end of the corridor. Lin Yating stood in place, watching his retreating figure, feeling a hint of confusion and worry in her heart.
Her thoughts, however, flew to a distant place, back to the carefree days she spent with Zhang Rui in her childhood.
She remembered playing together in the nearby park, catching fireflies, playing in the sand, and climbing trees. At that time, Zhang Rui always had a smile on his face. They would share dreams together, full of curiosity and anticipation for the future.
"Zhang Rui always used to say that he wanted to become an adventurer when he grew up, to see all the beautiful scenery in the world," Lin Yating smiled in her heart.
But as they grew older, everything changed. Their dreams and interests seemed to diverge more and more, even drifting apart from each other. Lin Yating became more focused on academics and socializing, while Zhang Rui gradually became silent and withdrawn, as if hiding some unfathomable secret.
"Maybe I wasn't paying attention, or maybe he didn't want to share, but either way, I can't just watch our friendship fade away like this," Lin Yating thought to herself.
She decided that no matter what difficulties and changes she faced, she would try to understand and bridge the gradually widening distance. She didn't want, when they looked back on this youthful friendship, to only be left with regret and misunderstanding.
So, Lin Yating slowly pushed open the door of the classroom, but her heart was filled with determination. She wanted to retrieve the beautiful time spent with Zhang Rui and also wanted to find the confident and cheerful Zhang Rui. She believed that as long as she was sincere, everything could still be salvaged.
