I spent the whole day in the library, and by the time I came out, it was already evening. The sunset painted half the sky red, and the evening glow seemed to cover the blue sky with a layer of colorful sand.
If it were the old me, I would have stopped to admire the view, take pictures, and share them with Zhao Ke, enjoying this lucky moment together. The old Zhao Ke always replied to my messages instantly; he showed great interest in everything I shared about my daily life and would discuss it with me.
I had gotten used to it; even if I passed by a flower bed and saw a group of ants lined up moving their homes, I couldn't help but share it with him. But ever since my family fell into hard times, he only occasionally responded to my messages with a sentence or two. After a while, I stopped trying to amuse myself. Without anyone to share with, what was the point of taking pictures of beautiful scenery?
As I passed by the small shop at the school gate, I intended to buy a bread to fill my stomach, but my gaze drifted toward a lottery ticket beside the counter. My hands itched, I thought. The clerk seemed to sense my thoughts and smiled as she handed me a lottery ticket. "Give it a try; what if you win the jackpot?"
I couldn't help but chuckle at myself. Before my family faced financial difficulties, I often bought lottery tickets and never won anything. So I didn't believe that such luck would fall on me. Back then, my parents would make some reward tickets just to cheer me up, letting me choose from them.
I still remember that birthday when my parents gave me ten reward tickets they made themselves. I picked one, and it turned out to be an Audi A6. I excitedly shared it with Zhao Ke, who happily said, "From now on, I'll be your exclusive driver!"
But now, he knows very well about my family's situation and still drives my luxury car as if nothing happened. If it weren't for wanting to buy a lottery ticket now, I wouldn't have remembered that at all. After all, I had given him too many gifts over the years. If this lottery ticket doesn't win, I'll go find him and ask for my car back! I secretly vowed in my heart.
At that moment, I chose to follow that inexplicable impulse inside me and bought a ticket, treating it as a way to boost my confidence. I nodded at the clerk, casually picked one out, and grabbed the cheapest bread available. After paying, I stuffed the lottery ticket into my backpack and quickly walked back to the dormitory.
If I stay a little longer, I'm afraid I will regret it. After all, life is already tight, and buying this useless ticket makes me unable to stop blaming myself.
On the day of the lottery draw, I dug out that ticket and absentmindedly went to the convenience store's Redemption Machine to check the numbers. To avoid being recognized, I even wore a hat and a mask.
I've heard too many jibes and mockery during this time; I didn't want to ruin my mood again over a lottery ticket worth just a few dozen dollars. Fortunately, it was the weekend, and there weren't many people in the shop. The owner was lounging in a rocking chair at the entrance, fanning himself, looking content and relaxed.
"Hello, boss, I'm here to redeem a lottery ticket." After a brief greeting, I headed straight for the Redemption Machine in the store. At first, I didn't feel anything special; it felt like completing a simple task.
But as the numbers began to appear one by one, my gaze calmly swept across the screen. However, when the third number matched, my heart suddenly raced. "No way?" I rubbed my eyes and leaned closer to the screen, widening my eyes to check each number.
When the fifth number matched as well, a chill shot up my spine to the top of my head. My hands trembled slightly, my heart began to pound wildly, and my mind became a chaotic mess. "Did... did I really win?!"
