After eavesdropping on Li Xiumei's backstory, Zhang Xiaoxiao finally remembered that she had originally planned to check on the little fox in the woodshed. She stretched her stiff legs and back before heading towards the woodshed.
Upon opening the door, the sound of the little fox's whimpering reached her ears. Zhang Xiaoxiao quickly lit the oil lamp, causing the little fox to jump in fright and struggle to escape.
"Don't be afraid, I won't hurt you," Zhang Xiaoxiao hurriedly said.
The little fox remained scared, curling up in a corner, dirty and looking quite miserable, which tugged at her heartstrings. Zhang Xiaoxiao wanted to approach it, but as soon as the little fox saw her coming closer, it awkwardly backed away.
It then dawned on Zhang Xiaoxiao that foxes are afraid of people. She immediately hesitated to get any closer, fearing she might scare the little fox even more. The little fox kept a vigilant eye on her, its expression filled with terror.
Zhang Xiaoxiao felt a pang of sympathy. "System, how long do you think it will take to raise this little fox properly?" she asked.
"Huh?" The system seemed confused.
"This little fox was caught by my man from the mountain, and I plan to keep it as a pet," Zhang Xiaoxiao explained.
"Huh?" The system was even more bewildered.
"What do you mean 'huh'?" Zhang Xiaoxiao said, slightly annoyed.
"Wait, you plan to keep this little fox as a pet?" the system asked incredulously.
"Yes," Zhang Xiaoxiao nodded.
"But foxes will kill your chickens and ducks," the system reminded her.
"Oh right." Zhang Xiaoxiao suddenly looked dumbfounded. How did she forget that?
"What should I do then?" she asked.
"How about you wait until it heals and then have your man release it back into the mountains?" the system suggested.
"That sounds good; I hope it doesn't get caught again next time," Zhang Xiaoxiao said.
"By the way, System, do you have any way to help the little fox get better faster?" Zhang Xiaoxiao asked.
"Of course I do," the System replied proudly.
"Really?" Zhang Xiaoxiao was overjoyed.
"But why should I tell you?" the System suddenly turned hostile.
"You..." Zhang Xiaoxiao was so angry her teeth itched.
"Unless..." the System continued.
"Unless what?" Zhang Xiaoxiao hurriedly asked.
"Unless you exchange it for completing a system task," the System answered.
"What system task?" Zhang Xiaoxiao asked in confusion.
"Did you forget what I told you before?" the System said, exasperated.
"What did you tell me before?" Zhang Xiaoxiao looked bewildered.
"I knew you would forget," the System said, even more frustrated.
"Then hurry up and tell me," Zhang Xiaoxiao urged.
"Fine, I'll reluctantly tell you again," the System said.
"Mm-hmm." Zhang Xiaoxiao nodded eagerly.
"The so-called system task is a task you need to complete. The content of the task is randomly drawn by the system and varies widely, but it's all to help you complete the main task, which is to make your man devoted to you," the System explained.
"Oh," Zhang Xiaoxiao realized.
"The task bar, system points, and special abilities are all aids for you to complete the main task," the System continued.
"Do I have a task bar now?" Zhang Xiaoxiao asked curiously.
"Not yet," the System replied.
"Why not?" Zhang Xiaoxiao asked in confusion.
"Because you haven't activated a task yet," the System answered.
"So how do I activate a task?" Zhang Xiaoxiao inquired.
"Wait," the System replied with just one word.
"Wait for what?" Zhang Xiaoxiao asked, puzzled.
"Wait for your man to be moved by you," the System answered.
"Ah?" Zhang Xiaoxiao was confused.
"Once he develops feelings for you, the task will automatically activate," the system explained.
"Oh," Zhang Xiaoxiao understood.
"Your primary task now is to make your man fall for you," the system said.
"Mm-hmm," Zhang Xiaoxiao nodded repeatedly.
"Oh right, it seems you completed a task today," the system suddenly remembered.
"What task?" Zhang Xiaoxiao asked curiously.
"Eavesdropping on the male lead and Li Xiumei's adoptive mother’s secret, getting the scoop on The Mystery of Li Xiumei's Background," the system replied.
"What?" Zhang Xiaoxiao looked bewildered.
"In simple terms, you learned about Li Xiumei's mysterious background," the system explained.
"Oh," Zhang Xiaoxiao realized.
"But..." the system hesitated.
"But what?" Zhang Xiaoxiao quickly asked.
"But you completed this task rather carelessly," the system criticized.
"What do you mean?" Zhang Xiaoxiao asked in confusion.
"I just happened to pass by and overheard them arguing," Zhang Xiaoxiao explained.
"..." The system was speechless.
"So this task wasn't something I actively completed; it just happened to come my way," Zhang Xiaoxiao concluded.
"..." The system was even more speechless.
How did it end up binding such a person? The system felt incredibly frustrated.
"Is there any reward for this task?" Zhang Xiaoxiao asked eagerly.
"There is," the system replied weakly.
"What reward?" Zhang Xiaoxiao asked excitedly.
"A few system points," the system answered.
"That's so little?" Zhang Xiaoxiao immediately became dissatisfied.
"Just be content. It's already lucky for someone like you to earn a few system points just by casually completing a task," the system said irritably.
"Fine," Zhang Xiaoxiao replied helplessly.
"Alright, I'm hanging up," the system said.
"Wait," Zhang Xiaoxiao quickly called out.
"What now?" the system asked impatiently.
"You said that my man would automatically trigger the task once he has feelings for me. Does he have feelings for me now?" Zhang Xiaoxiao asked.
"No," the system answered bluntly.
"Ah?" Zhang Xiaoxiao immediately deflated.
"When he starts to have feelings for you, you'll naturally know," the system said.
"Okay," Zhang Xiaoxiao could only accept this fact.
"I'm really hanging up now," the system stated.
"Mm," Zhang Xiaoxiao responded.
After the system disappeared, Zhang Xiaoxiao looked at the little fox again. The little fox was still very scared, watching Zhang Xiaoxiao warily.
Zhang Xiaoxiao had no choice but to exit the woodshed and close the door. She sat in the yard, gazing at the stars in the sky, feeling a bit downcast.
"Don't be sad," the system suddenly spoke up to comfort her.
"I'm not sad; I just think your rules are too strict," Zhang Xiaoxiao complained.
"That's the system's regulation; there's nothing I can do about it," the system replied helplessly.
"Hmph, one day I'll make all of you systems pay for this," Zhang Xiaoxiao said fiercely.
"Pfft..." The system couldn't help but laugh.
"What are you laughing at?" Zhang Xiaoxiao snapped in embarrassment and anger.
"I'm laughing at how silly you are," the system answered.
