The next day, due to the burning pain in his chest, Miao Chengmin had a restless night, with the entire dormitory barely managing to sleep through the sounds of him tossing and turning. Miao Chengmin himself was in worse shape; he had been pressing on his wound with his eyes blinking all night, and as the pain intensified in the early hours, he dared not make a sound. At that moment, he felt extremely tired, and just as his eyelids began to close, a wave of pain surged into his brain, instantly waking him up.
Tormented by the pain and feeling frustrated, Miao Chengmin decided not to sleep anymore and picked up his phone to scroll through videos. He flipped through two videos that discussed the recent car accident in City S. Initially intending to swipe away, he paused when he saw the screen showing a Bugatti that had been smashed into a smiley face, reminding him of Ming Juan's utterly devastated face when she was in his arms.
"According to police investigations, the deceased is a relative of the Ming Family, specifically the biological mother of the young lady from the Ming Family..."
"Her mother?!" Miao Chengmin's pupils constricted sharply. Ming Juan had such a good temperament and endured so much, but this time it was her biological mother who was involved! No wonder she...
The blow of losing her mother was far more terrifying for Ming Juan than having all their assets confiscated from the Ming Family.
"Based on footage from the cameras, the police have reported: The Ming Family vehicle was only suspected of speeding, while the driver of the SUV is considered the main culprit..."
Miao Chengmin closely examined the traffic lights on either side of the camera; there was only one second left on the green light for Ming Juan's mother, while the other side was already yellow. The SUV showed no signs of stopping and barreled through.
Moreover, it didn't just speed through from a stop; it came from behind. Faced with a yellow light and a Bugatti visible in the curved mirror at the intersection, it actually accelerated.
"Hiss—"
Miao Chengmin touched his chin as he watched what would become the fatal scene for Ming Juan's mother unfold on screen.
"The possibility of premeditation cannot be ruled out," Miao Chengmin thought. "What kind of normal person would accelerate through a yellow light? Especially at an intersection with a curved mirror?"
After all, there were indeed radicals online threatening to "exterminate the Ming Family's nine clans."
"The Ming Family has committed grave sins, but there are also good people among them. Why go this far?" Considering this possibility made Miao Chengmin suddenly feel that Ming Juan was not just generally pitiful. She did not deserve to be treated this way by fate.
Ming Juan's kind nature must be related to her upbringing. And her father, as the ultimate authority figure, surely wouldn't be any better.
The only person who could have had an intimate relationship with Ming Juan and taught her to be a kind person was her mother.
Lost in thought, Miao Chengmin let out a deep sigh. Indeed, good people should be kept apart from bad ones; otherwise, good people might end up buried alongside them.
Everything that had happened to Ming Juan recently made Miao Chengmin realize that as someone she trusted, he could not stand by idly. He wasn't someone who would treat others' troubles as mere jokes.
"Remember to drink more hot water."
Just as he typed this line, Miao Chengmin deleted it. That sounded like something a scumbag would say.
"After crying for so long, remember to rehydrate."
Miao Chengmin thought this line was better. After hesitating for a moment, at three fifty-two in the morning, he sent his first message to Ming Juan.
It was late at night, and she definitely wouldn't reply. So Miao Chengmin continued to send messages with a sense of relief.
"Think more about happy things; maybe it will help a bit."
But how could Ming Juan possibly think of anything happy right now? This wasn't something trivial like "I did poorly on my exam, I'm so sad."
Miao Chengmin felt that this statement was somewhat hollow, so he added another line.
"Life inevitably involves parting and loss; it's just a matter of time. Look at it this way, we are all unfortunate souls in this world, and no one can enjoy it forever."
After sending the message, Miao Chengmin felt it was too tragic, so he retracted it. However, leaving a trace of the retraction didn't look good either, so he simply sent a cute penguin emoji instead.
"I hope you can feel better." After sending that, Miao Chengmin put down his phone and gazed out at the moon.
Buzz.
"Huh?!" Miao Chengmin's phone vibrated!
He opened his phone in disbelief; Miss Ming actually replied!
"No way?" Miao Chengmin couldn't help but mumble.
Ming Juan's profile picture was of a pure girl smiling at the camera with rabbit ears; Miao Chengmin thought the avatar suited her appearance perfectly.
"Are you still awake?"
Ming Juan sent a question.
"Yeah, my stomach hurts," Miao Chengmin fabricated a lie; he didn't dare blame Ming Juan for biting too hard.
"I was just looking at the moon; I finished knitting my sweater and have been staring ever since." Ming Juan seemed to ignore Miao Chengmin's message and continued talking about herself.
"Ah? I looked at it for a while too," Miao Chengmin replied with a smiley face.
One moon, two people. The boys' and girls' dorms were separated by the cafeteria; it felt as if Miao Chengmin and Ming Juan could see each other's eyes through the moonlight.
"How nice, there's someone to watch the moon with me," Ming Juan added a crying emoji.
Miao Chengmin couldn't find words but sent another cute penguin emoji instead.
Ming Juan stared at the animated emoji, and her lips unconsciously curled into a smile.
"In the future, maybe only you will accompany me... to watch the moon."
Miao Chengmin felt as if he had been electrocuted when he read that.
In truth, Ming Juan had no real hope left; she was completely despaired now. The only ones willing to genuinely accompany her were her mother and Yu Feiyao. And now? Only Yu Feiyao remained, but she knew she could never be Yu Feiyao's whole life; she had her own dreams and desires for love that would ultimately fade under the mundane pressures of life.
A few tear-sized droplets rolled down her face onto the ground.
"As long as you ask, I can be there anytime," Miao Chengmin sent back.
Ming Juan rolled her eyes and nearly fainted from disbelief.
It turns out he is a typical straight man. However, Ming Juan wasn't thinking about flirting with him; she simply couldn't be in the mood for that right now.
"Um... about me biting you, I'm willing to take full responsibility for any compensation," Ming Juan shifted the topic.
"No need for that. Just rest well and calm down. I'm really sorry for everything," Miao Chengmin replied, still in the tone of a senior educating a junior.
"I'll keep your words in mind, senior," Ming Juan responded, "but I have a request."
"A request?" Miao Chengmin thought it was probably something like hoping he wouldn't spread rumors.
"Could I invite Mr. Miao to dinner sometime?"
Miao Chengmin was momentarily stunned—this was an invitation from the young lady of the Ming Family, a super beautiful woman!
"I want to personally express my sincerest gratitude to you once I've calmed down; you've truly helped me a lot," Ming Juan continued.
"Is that okay?"
Miao Chengmin hesitated for a moment and reluctantly replied with one word: "Sure."
"Great, thank you for agreeing," Ming Juan said before finally walking back into her dorm room from the balcony where the cold wind was blowing.
"Get some sleep early, good night."
After leaving that final remark, Ming Juan collapsed onto her pillow. A chilling sensation seeped from the wet pillow, yet her relentless tears continued to soak it.
As dawn broke, Li Tao was awakened by the urge to urinate. He rubbed his eyes and glanced at the clock by the window: "It's six-thirty..."
However, Miao Chengmin's bed was already empty.
"No way?" Li Tao couldn't believe his eyes. "Is it trendy to go missing lately?"
For them as third-year students, after this semester, they would soon be stepping into society as fourth-years. This year was much more stressful than before for everyone; besides preparing job application materials, they also needed to find ways to improve their grades. Most importantly, they had to choose between pursuing further studies or entering the workforce.
Although his family thought that athletes could prioritize employment, Miao Chengmin didn't see it that way. He wasn't sure what he wanted to do in the future, but getting a graduate degree wouldn't hurt. He just worried about whether his family would still be willing to spend money on his education.
With these thoughts in mind, Miao Chengmin rode his bicycle to the school hospital entrance. The hospital opened early, and since he couldn't sleep anyway, he decided to come early.
"This wound... I don't know which department to go to," Miao Chengmin said as he stared at the many medical specialties on the self-service machine with a helpless expression, his finger wavering between emergency and surgery departments.
From Miao Chengmin's perspective, he felt this wound could qualify for emergency care, but he had also dragged it out for a whole night.
"Emergency department it is."
A familiar female voice came from behind, followed by a fair and slender hand decisively guiding Miao Chengmin to the emergency department.
"Ah?" Miao Chengmin turned around to see Ming Juan smiling slightly.
Ming Juan was still wearing the black hoodie from yesterday, which was long enough to cover her hips. She stood with her legs neatly together, hands behind her back, tilting her head slightly.
As if nothing had happened, she faced Miao Chengmin with a playful demeanor, though her red eyes and swollen bags under them were the only evidence of last night's heart-wrenching events.
"How come..." Miao Chengmin noticed that she dared to go out without a mask or sunglasses and looked quite normal, feeling a hint of relief in her heart as she waved her hands, unsure of what to express.
"What do you mean how come? Can't I be here?" Ming Juan raised her lips as if she had succeeded in something.
Ming Juan stood on the side path, watching the girl as the morning light slowly spread.
"I've been waiting for quite some time," Ming Juan said. "Go on and see the doctor."
"Okay," Miao Chengmin replied and walked toward the consultation room.
After Miao Chengmin entered, Ming Juan reached into her hoodie and pulled out a turquoise amber hanging from her chest.
"Mom, I remember when I was little, watching you suffer from domestic violence at the hands of Dad. I could comfort you, and you once said that when someone is cast into darkness, there will always be a beam of light to guide them into its embrace."
Closing her eyes, Ming Juan saw her mother's loving gaze again as she extended her hand gently to hold her beloved daughter close.
"Juan'er, do you know? You are the beam of light that guides me in this dark family."
Little Ming Juan lifted her face and gently pressed it against her mother's bruised cheek.
"Mom..."
Tears were no longer a reason for wailing but rather a signal responding to her mother.
"I think I've found that beam of light."
"Perhaps in this world, there is always so much darkness in people's hearts. But those of us who are willing to be pure will eventually meet."
"I understand now, Mom. It is your life that guides me, allowing me to see the brightest white pearl amidst the vast darkness."
"I will live well because I am actually very rich—I have your will guiding me far away, and I have the best friends who share hardships with me..."
"Ming Juan, I'm done," Miao Chengmin called out as she exited the consultation room. "Will you accompany me to get my prescription?"
It seemed that Miao Chengmin no longer regarded Ming Juan as some kind of young lady.
But isn't this exactly what Ming Juan had always desired? She wished she could be carefree like other girls, pursuing her future freely without being labeled by family or society.
"And I still have my favorite boy accompanying me."
"Okay," Ming Juan thought as she placed the turquoise amber back into her hoodie, elegantly pacing on the marble floor while tapping a rhythm with her steps. After playfully tousling her curly hair, Ming Juan winked at Miao Chengmin and confidently walked up to her shoulder.
