After finishing dinner with the maid's service, I returned to the chamber. The chamber was large and lavishly decorated, yet it felt empty and devoid of life, making me feel even more lonely.
I walked to the window and gazed out at the pitch-black night sky, filled with confusion and unease. I didn't know why I had come here or where I should go next.
"Miss, what are you thinking about?" A gentle voice came from behind me.
I turned around to see a girl in a pink dress standing at the door with a bright smile; it was the maid I had met earlier, named Mangmang.
" Mangmang, it's you," I forced a smile. "What brings you here?"
"I saw you alone in the chamber and was worried you might feel bored, so I came to keep you company," Mangmang said as she placed a tray on the table. "These are snacks I made myself; please try them."
"Thank you." I picked up a piece of snack, took a light bite, and found it sweet and soft, a delicious treat I had never tasted before.
"Is it good?" Mangmang asked expectantly.
"Yes, it's delicious." I nodded, a hint of surprise flashing in my eyes. "I didn't expect snacks from the demon realm to be this tasty."
"Of course! Everything from our demon realm is made with the best ingredients," Mangmang said with a smile, her tone carrying a hint of pride. "I'm glad you like it."
" Mangmang, you don't need to call me 'Miss' anymore; just call me by my name," I said sincerely as I set down the snack. "Since we are in the demon realm now and will be living here, there's no need for such formality."
"This..." Mangmang hesitated; according to the customs of the demon realm, a maid was not allowed to directly address the queen by her name.
"It's alright; there are no outsiders here," I noticed her concern and smiled. "Just think of me as a friend."
Seeing me so approachable touched Mangmang's heart, and a smile appeared on her face. "Alright, then I'll call you 'my lady.'"
"That's more like it." I smiled contentedly. "You don't need to refer to yourself as a maid either; just use my name."
"This... okay then." Mangmang agreed reluctantly as she saw my insistence.
"What are you thinking about, my lady?" Mangmang asked as I stared blankly out the window.
I withdrew my gaze and sighed, "I was just thinking about how I suddenly ended up in the Demon Realm. Everything here feels so strange and unsettling."
"Don't worry, my lady," Mangmang comforted. "Since the Demon Lord has said you are his queen, he will surely protect you well."
I forced a smile; protection? She didn't believe that the cold Demon Lord would protect me. He might even wish for me to disappear quickly!
"By the way, Mangmang, do you know what kind of person the Demon Lord is?" I asked tentatively.
Mangmang pondered for a moment before replying, "The Demon Lord... has a rather aloof personality and rarely smiles, but he cares deeply for the citizens of the Demon Realm. He is very capable and is revered by everyone as their monarch."
I nodded; that aligned with what I had heard before.
"Do you know why he wants to marry me?" I continued to ask, as this question had been troubling me.
"Well..." Mangmang shook her head. "I’m not sure either, but the Demon Lord always has his reasons for doing things. You shouldn't think too much about it."
Seeing that I couldn't get any more answers, I stopped asking questions, but her heart was filled with more confusion. What exactly was the Demon Lord's purpose?
My days in the Demon Realm were quite peaceful; aside from dealing with the tedious rituals and rules every day, there wasn't much that felt out of place.
Xuan Shang Jun rarely appeared before me. When we did meet, he would only glance at me coldly before turning away, which only confirmed my belief that he had no feelings for me.
One day, while I was strolling in the garden, I suddenly heard a melodious flute sound. Following the sound, I walked deep into a bamboo grove.
In the grove, a man dressed in a black robe sat on a piece of green stone with his back to me, playing the flute. The music soared at times and dipped low at others, as if telling a story.
I was captivated by the sound until it finally ceased, bringing me back to reality.
The man turned around, revealing a handsome face that was unmatched—none other than Xuan Shang Jun.
"Devil Lord?" I looked at him in surprise, not expecting him to play the flute, and so beautifully at that.
Xuan Shang Jun put down the jade flute and looked at me, a hint of barely perceptible tenderness flashing in his eyes. "What brings you here?"
"I... I just heard the flute music, so I came to take a look." I felt a bit uneasy under his gaze and lowered my head.
"Do you like this piece?" Xuan Shang Jun asked.
"Yes, it's very beautiful," I nodded. "What is the name of this piece?"
"Forgotten River."
"Forgotten River?" I murmured to myself; the name seemed familiar.
"You seem to have a fondness for things from the Abyss Realm," Xuan Shang Jun suddenly asked, his tone carrying a hint of inquiry.
"No, not really. I just..." I denied it; after all, I couldn't tell him that I came from the Abyss Realm, could I?
"Your clothing and your demeanor are completely out of place in the Demon Realm," Xuan Shang Jun pressed on, his tone carrying a sense of pressure. "Tell me, who exactly are you? What is your purpose in the Demon Realm?"
