The light rain continued to fall, and Zhang Xiaoxiao and Zhao Guangcai sat on a small bench at the entrance, enjoying the view of the rain.
"If only I could grow a pair of wings," Zhang Xiaoxiao said, gazing at the sky, her mind wandering.
"What's that? You want to fly up into the sky?" Zhao Guangcai laughed.
"No, no, no, I'm just thinking out loud," Zhang Xiaoxiao waved her hand dismissively.
"Oh," Zhao Guangcai replied.
"If I could really fly, it would be wonderful to soar in the sky, free and easy," Zhang Xiaoxiao began to fantasize again.
"When the opportunity arises, I'll take you on a plane," Zhao Guangcai joked.
"Sure," Zhang Xiaoxiao responded.
As they chatted idly, Xiao Liang rushed over, tears streaming down her face.
"Xiao Liang, what's wrong?" Zhang Xiaoxiao immediately sensed something was off and hurriedly asked.
"Woo woo woo..." Xiao Liang choked on her words, unable to speak.
"Don't rush, take your time. What happened?" Zhang Xiaoxiao comforted her.
"My dad, he, he..." Xiao Liang stammered.
"What happened to your dad?" Zhang Xiaoxiao asked.
"He doesn't want me and my mom anymore," Xiao Liang finally broke down in tears.
"Ah? Why?" Zhang Xiaoxiao exclaimed in surprise.
"After he went out to work, he fell for another auntie. He wants to divorce my mom," Xiao Liang cried.
"What?" Zhang Xiaoxiao was shocked.
Xiao Liang's father was known in the village as an honest man; how could he do something like this?
"Xiao Liang, are you sure? Could it be a misunderstanding?" Zhang Xiaoxiao asked.
"No way! Mom showed me a letter from Dad; it clearly says he wants to divorce her," Xiao Liang affirmed.
"This..." Zhang Xiaoxiao was momentarily at a loss for words.
"Xiao Liang, Uncle and Aunt won't get divorced, so don't worry," Zhao Guangcai comforted.
"Really?" Xiao Liang looked at Zhao Guangcai, tears welling in his eyes.
"Yes, really," Zhao Guangcai nodded seriously.
"But in Dad's letter..." Xiao Liang still felt a bit scared.
"Maybe it's a misunderstanding?" Zhang Xiaoxiao suggested.
"A misunderstanding?" Xiao Liang asked, puzzled.
"Yes, maybe Uncle and Aunt are just joking with you," Zhang Xiaoxiao smiled.
"Joking?" Xiao Liang was confused.
"Exactly! Just like how you joke with your mom sometimes. Maybe Uncle and Aunt are just playing around and want to give you a surprise," Zhang Xiaoxiao explained.
"Is that true?" Xiao Liang asked, half-convinced.
"Yes, it is," Zhang Xiaoxiao affirmed.
"But..." Xiao Liang wanted to say more.
"Xiao Liang, you have to believe Uncle and Aunt; they won't separate," Zhao Guangcai said earnestly.
"Okay." Xiao Liang nodded, seeming to be persuaded.
"Did your parents mention when they would come back in the letter?" Zhang Xiaoxiao asked.
If Xiao Liang's dad really intended to divorce his mom, they should come back to the village at least to clarify things in front of Granny Wang.
"No," Xiao Liang shook his head.
"Did they mention anything else?" Zhang Xiaoxiao continued to ask.
"It seems they mentioned that they would come back during the New Year," Xiao Liang recalled.
"That's good news," Zhang Xiaoxiao said.
"What do you mean?" Xiao Liang asked, confused.
"If they really plan to get divorced, they will definitely come back to the village during the New Year, and then we can ask them about it," Zhang Xiaoxiao explained.
"Well, that's true," Xiao Liang nodded.
"So, don't worry," Zhang Xiaoxiao said, patting Xiao Liang's head to comfort him.
"Okay," Xiao Liang replied.
"By the way, you should go home and change your clothes. Look, your clothes are completely soaked," Zhang Xiaoxiao said.
"Okay," Xiao Liang responded.
"I'm going to get the hat," Zhao Guangcai said.
"Alright," Zhang Xiaoxiao nodded.
Zhao Guangcai went inside to get the hat, then he and Zhang Xiaoxiao took Xiao Liang back to his home.
The three had only walked halfway when they saw Granny Wang looking for Xiao Liang.
"Xiao Liang, you child, how did you end up here? I was worried sick looking for you," Granny Wang said with a sigh of relief upon seeing Xiao Liang.
"Grandma, I'm sorry for making you worry," Xiao Liang apologized.
"It's alright, it's alright. Just don't run off like that next time," Granny Wang said.
"Okay, I understand," Xiao Liang nodded.
"Where are you all headed?" Granny Wang asked as she looked at Zhang Xiaoxiao and Zhao Guangcai.
"Xiao Liang's clothes are wet, so we're taking him home to change," Zhang Xiaoxiao explained.
"Oh, I see," Granny Wang replied.
"Granny Wang, how did you know Xiao Liang was here?" Zhang Xiaoxiao asked curiously.
"I went to his house but didn't find him, so I asked around. Just now, Liu Ergou told me he saw Xiao Liang running in this direction, so I hurried over," Granny Wang explained.
"I see," Zhang Xiaoxiao said.
"Grandma, I'm sorry for worrying you again," Xiao Liang apologized once more.
"It's fine. Just don't do that next time," Granny Wang said.
"Okay, I understand," Xiao Liang nodded.
