On the way back, Chen Shuying asked about her marriage with Zhao Guangcai, and Zhang Xiaoxiao had to explain it again. After she finished explaining, Chen Shuying finally understood.
"So you married Zhao the Hunter to fulfill the original owner's last wish," Chen Shuying said, enlightened.
"Yes," Zhang Xiaoxiao nodded.
"Sigh, my dear child, it's pitiful that you sacrificed your own lifelong happiness for someone else," Chen Shuying sighed.
"Not really a sacrifice; Brother Zhao treats me quite well," Zhang Xiaoxiao replied.
"He should treat you well, after all, you married him to save his mother," Chen Shuying said.
"Yes," Zhang Xiaoxiao responded lightly.
In truth, she knew that her decision to marry Zhao Guangcai was not solely to fulfill the original owner's wish; part of it was also to establish herself in this world. After all, she was now alone and had no relatives, and when she grew old, she would have no one to rely on.
That's why she wanted to find a reliable man to marry while she was still young, so she could have a companion in the future. As for love... she wished for it too, but she didn't dare to hope for it just yet.
Throughout the journey, they chatted a lot, and the ox cart bumped along violently. Zhang Xiaoxiao held onto the railing tightly, reminiscing about the little moments after marrying Zhao Guangcai, and suddenly felt a wave of sweetness in her heart.
She didn't know what was happening to her; although she had known Zhao Guangcai for only a short time, it felt as if they had been together for a long time like an old married couple, sharing an indescribable sense of understanding and warmth.
" Xiaoxiao, what are you smiling about?" Chen Shuying suddenly asked.
"Ah? Am I smiling?" Zhang Xiaoxiao replied in surprise.
"Yes, you've been smiling the whole time," Chen Shuying confirmed.
"Really?" Zhang Xiaoxiao touched her face and realized that she indeed had been smiling.
"Did something happy come to mind?" Chen Shuying asked curiously.
"I..." Zhang Xiaoxiao initially wanted to deny it but then thought there was nothing to hide, so she smiled and admitted, "Yes, I was thinking about Brother Zhao."
"No wonder you're so happy," Chen Shuying laughed.
Zhang Xiaoxiao smiled slightly and didn't say anything more. They continued chatting while making their way back and finally returned to the village an hour later. The village was located halfway up the mountain, so the last stretch of road was quite bumpy.
"Xiaoxiao, hold on tight, this road is not easy to navigate," Chen Shuying reminded.
"Mm," Zhang Xiaoxiao replied, gripping the railing tightly, her whole body tense.
As the ox cart jolted along, her heartbeat quickened. Just when she was sweating from the tension, the cart finally went down the slope.
Zhang Xiaoxiao let out a sigh of relief, releasing her grip to wipe the sweat from her forehead.
"Alright, we’ve arrived. Thank you all," Chen Shuying said.
"You're welcome," Zhang Xiaoxiao replied.
The two women got off the ox cart, thanked the Fellow Villager, and headed home with their purchases.
Around noon, Zhao Guangcai returned from town. After setting down his basket, he noticed that Zhang Xiaoxiao was not in the house and went to look for her at Chen Shuying's place.
"Zhao the Hunter, you’re here looking for Xiaoxiao, right?" a Fellow Villager asked.
"Yes," Zhao Guangcai nodded.
"She’s in the kitchen cooking," the Fellow Villager said.
"Okay, thank you," Zhao Guangcai replied.
"You’re welcome," the Fellow Villager smiled.
Zhao Guangcai nodded to the Fellow Villager and walked toward the house.
As soon as he entered the kitchen, he saw Zhang Xiaoxiao tending to the fire.
"Wife, why are you cooking?" Zhao Guangcai asked in surprise.
"I came to help Sister Chen," Zhang Xiaoxiao explained.
"Oh," Zhao Guangcai responded and squatted down beside Zhang Xiaoxiao to help her with the fire.
"Where's Sister Chen?" Zhang Xiaoxiao asked.
"She went out to wash vegetables," Zhao Guangcai answered.
"Oh," Zhang Xiaoxiao nodded.
"Wife, don’t come to do these things in the future; just let me handle it," Zhao Guangcai said.
"Sister Chen asked me to help; I can’t just take money without doing anything," Zhang Xiaoxiao replied.
"Then let me help you," Zhao Guangcai offered.
"No need; you've been busy all morning and must be tired enough," Zhang Xiaoxiao said.
"I'm not tired," Zhao Guangcai insisted.
"I said you're tired, so you are tired. Go take a rest," Zhang Xiaoxiao said domineeringly.
"Alright," Zhao Guangcai replied helplessly.
"That's more like it," Zhang Xiaoxiao said with satisfaction.
"Wife, I'm heading back now. I'll bring you some good food later," Zhao Guangcai said.
"Mm, go ahead," Zhang Xiaoxiao waved her hand.
After Zhao Guangcai left, Zhang Xiaoxiao continued to tend to the fire.
After a while, Chen Shuying walked in with the washed vegetables.
" Xiaoxiao, the vegetables from the town have arrived," Chen Shuying said.
"So fast?" Zhang Xiaoxiao exclaimed in surprise.
"Yeah, I didn't expect it either," Chen Shuying replied.
"Then let's hurry up and prepare," Zhang Xiaoxiao urged.
"Okay," Chen Shuying responded and began to chop the vegetables.
Zhang Xiaoxiao started washing pots and dishes.
The two worked together and soon finished preparing the meal.
Just after they were done, the man who delivered the vegetables walked in.
"Sister Chen, do you have tables and chairs?" the man asked.
"Oh no, I forgot to buy them," Chen Shuying said, slapping her forehead in frustration.
"What... what should we do?" the man asked awkwardly.
"Big brother, don't worry yet; let me think of a solution," Chen Shuying said.
"Make it quick; the brothers are still waiting," the man replied.
"Alright, I'll hurry," Chen Shuying said.
Upon hearing this, the man left the kitchen.
" Xiaoxiao, I... I think I've caused trouble," Chen Shuying said nervously.
"Sister-in-law, don't worry; I'll ask Brother Zhao if he has any," Zhang Xiaoxiao said.
"Right! How could I forget about him?" Chen Shuying exclaimed with delight.
"I'm going now," Zhang Xiaoxiao said.
"Okay, hurry up," Chen Shuying urged.
Zhang Xiaoxiao responded and then hurriedly left.
When she returned home, Zhao Guangcai was cooking.
"Wife, why are you back?" Zhao Guangcai asked in surprise.
"Brother Zhao, do you have any tables and chairs at your place?" Zhang Xiaoxiao inquired.
"Yes, but not many," Zhao Guangcai replied.
"How many do you have?" Zhang Xiaoxiao asked.
"There are only two tables," Zhao Guangcai said.
"That might not be enough," Zhang Xiaoxiao frowned.
"It’s not enough; I only have those two tables at home," Zhao Guangcai confirmed.
"What should we do?" Zhang Xiaoxiao asked anxiously.
"I'll go borrow some," Zhao Guangcai said.
"Really?" Zhang Xiaoxiao exclaimed with joy.
"Yes," Zhao Guangcai nodded.
"That's great!" Zhang Xiaoxiao said happily.
"Wife, wait here for me; I'll go get the tables," Zhao Guangcai instructed.
"Okay," Zhang Xiaoxiao replied.
Zhao Guangcai washed his hands and then went to move the tables.
Since there weren't enough tables and chairs at home, he had to bring both tables over.
When he returned after moving the tables, Chen Shuying quickly approached him.
"Zhao the Hunter, thank you so much," Chen Shuying expressed her gratitude.
"No need to be polite," Zhao Guangcai said lightly.
"Brother Zhao, you should take a break," Zhang Xiaoxiao suggested.
"Alright," Zhao Guangcai agreed and then sat down nearby.
