As night gradually fell, the enchanting neon lights made the city even more alluring. Fei Hu knew that these had little to do with him; finding a job to make ends meet was his true need.
Fei Hu had walked several streets and felt that despite the city's size, he had no place to call home. Just as he was feeling lost, a Stir-Fry Shop on the roadside caught his attention. He walked over and watched the Boss skillfully tossing a frying pan, preparing plate after plate of Rice Noodles. As the Rice Noodles were served, Fei Hu silently memorized each step. He stood there motionless, watching for nearly an hour.
The Boss was a middle-aged man in his fifties, and business was booming; he was so busy that he seemed a bit overwhelmed. He glanced at Fei Hu and said, "Come over, young man. Watching won't help you; what matters is practical experience."
Upon hearing this, Fei Hu felt a surge of excitement and walked over. He took the frying pan from the Boss's hands and, under his guidance, cooked his first plate of Rice Noodles. Watching customers finish their meals and pay, Fei Hu felt reassured. He had plenty of strength; heat and smoke were nothing to him. Soon enough, he was tossing the frying pan with ease, and the Boss smiled as he lit another stove.
For an entire night, Fei Hu's hands never stopped moving. When they closed up at two o'clock, the Boss told him that he had cooked over a hundred servings alone. Hearing this number made Fei Hu beam with joy. It seemed that in this city, as long as one was willing to work hard and endure hardships, making a living wasn't too difficult. As he left, the Boss gave him fifty yuan, saying it was five jiao per serving. If he was willing, he could come back tomorrow for more work.
Feeling the fifty yuan in his pocket as he walked down the empty street, Fei Hu happily hummed a tune. Just then, a red Sedan swerved sharply and crashed into him from behind. The screeching brakes jolted Fei Hu from his reverie. He quickly leaped forward and grabbed onto a nearby utility pole just as the front of the red car grazed it and stalled.
His heart raced; he wasn't a timid person, but this unexpected incident startled him greatly. He thought it might be someone coming after him again. Just as he pondered how to respond, a comical scene unfolded: a heavily made-up woman leaned out of the car window, pointed at Fei Hu clinging to the pole, and laughed, "Monkey! You're a monkey! I like you!"
Oh my! It turned out to be a drunkard. Thankfully, his quick reflexes saved him; otherwise, he might have ended up under her car's wheels. As Fei Hu jumped down from the pole and prepared to leave, the woman called out to him, "Mr. Wu! Don't go! Let's drink some more; we agreed not to leave until we're drunk!"
Fei Hu initially wanted to walk away but realized he couldn't abandon her in this situation. If he left, she would either suffer or someone else would have to deal with her mess. Just as he was about to turn around, she started her car again, which terrified him. He dashed forward, yanked open the car door, and pulled her out.
The woman struggled and shouted nonsensically: "Get lost! How can I drink with people like you? And you—this wild man—what do you want from me? Are you trying to take advantage of me?"
What nonsense! Hearing this made Fei Hu want to laugh. After all this commotion and with the evening breeze blowing, the woman suddenly squatted down and opened her mouth wide; an unpleasant substance spewed out uncontrollably. She vomited violently until she could hardly breathe anymore. Unable to watch any longer, Fei Hu covered his mouth and bent down to pat her back gently.
The woman under the streetlight, despite the thick layer of foundation on her face, had a fiery figure that would provoke thoughts in any man at this hour, and Fei Hu was no exception. After her outburst, she seemed to regain some clarity. She attempted to stand up, but after squatting for too long, her legs were unsteady. Suddenly, she leaned back, and Fei Hu instinctively reached out his arm, allowing her to lean securely against him.
Her soft body emitted a faint scent of perfume mixed with the smell of liquor, creating a dizzying effect for Fei Hu. The woman slightly turned her head, lifted her somewhat heavy eyelids, and pointed at her Sedan. Fei Hu understood her intention and almost carried her into the car. Given the situation, he dared not let her sit in the driver's seat.
Once inside the car, the woman seemed to improve a bit. She grabbed a bottle of mineral water from the car and drank it eagerly before turning to Fei Hu, who was standing outside, and said, "Thank you. Can you take me home?"
Fei Hu glanced at the cars occasionally passing by on the road; none seemed to pay attention to them. It appeared he had no choice but to take her home. However, after the incident with the elderly man, he felt uneasy about what might happen if he returned this woman home and something went wrong.
While Fei Hu hesitated, the woman spoke in a charming tone, "Are you afraid of me or just can't drive?" She extended her delicate hand holding an ID card.
Fei Hu took it and saw that her name was indeed Xia Yan, and she was a local resident living not too far away—just a thirty to forty-minute drive. After confirming her identity, he jumped into the driver's seat without hesitation. Fortunately, he had learned to drive while working back home; his grandfather had praised him then: "My boy Huzi may have come from the mountains, but his ability to adapt is impressive."
As the Red Sedan cruised along the wide road in the dead of night, it felt like a personal racetrack for Fei Hu. He pushed the speed to its limit and was surprised at how fast he could go in an automatic car for the first time. They quickly arrived at the address Xia Yan provided; the security guard at the community only glanced at the license plate before opening the gate.
Once inside the community, Fei Hu was unsure where to go. Looking back, he noticed Xia Yan had fallen asleep in the back seat. Her two snow-white legs were exposed beneath her skirt, captivating under the dim light. Fei Hu struggled against his impulses and gently nudged Xia Yan. She slowly opened her eyes and playfully complained, "You're annoying; I was sleeping so well! Let's talk tomorrow."
Fei Hu thought to himself that this woman was quite unaware of her situation. However, he calmly replied, "We're home now; call someone to come down and get you! I need to leave."
Xia Yan then realized and hurriedly said, "I'm sorry; I live alone with no family around. I live on the 12th floor of building 6; please take me upstairs! You’ve come this far; don’t leave me hanging now!"
Fei Hu's heart raced at that moment. It was late at night, taking such an alluring woman home who lived alone—wouldn't there be some story unfolding? His mind was in turmoil as he thought about how at his age he had only heard others talk about women but never truly experienced it himself.
Seeing that Fei Hu remained still, Xia Yan suddenly leaned forward until her lips were almost touching his face. She exhaled softly and said, "Please," while gently gripping his shoulder and shaking it slightly. This action sent shivers through Fei Hu's body; how could he refuse?
In the elevator, it was unclear whether Xia Yan was truly unable to stand due to drunkenness or if she was just pretending. She leaned closely against Fei Hu, who had his arms wrapped around her waist, almost carrying her back to the room. While Xia Yan seemed comfortable, Fei Hu's male instincts made him feel extremely uncomfortable.
The room was quite luxurious but in disarray, clearly a space lived in by one person. It was evident that Xia Yan's life was a bit chaotic.
After helping Xia Yan sit down, Fei Hu really didn't want to leave, but he forced himself to say, "Alright, I'm leaving," and turned to walk towards the door.
"Stop! Where do you think you're going at this hour? You should go take a shower and sleep in the guest room until morning," Xia Yan suddenly changed her tone, looking somewhat intimidating.
Fei Hu's heart was in turmoil, torn between staying and leaving. When the beautiful woman genuinely urged him to stay, he felt a bit hesitant. Xia Yan approached him and without giving him a chance to argue, pushed him into the bathroom.
Wow, this bathroom was stunning; it was Fei Hu's first time seeing something like it in his life. The white walls and floor, the bright large mirror, and the shiny showerhead were all impressive. There was also a large bathtub against the wall. Fei Hu felt like Liu Laolao entering the Grand View Garden; he was dazzled and momentarily forgot why he had come in.
Turning around, he noticed women's underwear hanging on a clothes rack inside, nearly causing him to faint. He had only seen such things on DVDs; he had never had the fortune of seeing them in real life. There were various colors and styles, some with lace and cutouts, each piece revealing more than it concealed. Fei Hu's heart raced as he struggled to maintain his composure.
"Hey! Why isn't there any water running? Do you need me to help?" came Xia Yan's voice. Upon hearing this, Fei Hu's face instantly turned bright red.
