Rao Jie followed Wu Rong out of the elevator in astonishment. Wu Rong slightly frowned as he looked at Long Yong. However, at that moment, Long Yong had already forgotten who he was supposed to be receiving. It was the first time he had seen such a beautiful and stunning Rao Jie, no longer resembling a junior student, which made his heart race even more.
"Senior, I... I came with Professor Wu. What are you doing here?" Rao Jie asked.
Long Yong smiled and replied, "It's a big event for the Shencheng Mathematics Community, hosted by Shencheng University. We've been brought in as extra hands. By the way, your Old President is here too; you'll get to see him later."
Rao Jie didn't feel happy about it; instead, she felt a bit awkward. Here she was, someone who felt insignificant, attending the banquet because of Wu Rong, while seniors like them were working hard. It made her feel somewhat embarrassed.
As Long Yong spoke, he casually glanced at Wu Rong and then said with a smile, "You have more face than us! You actually get to accompany Professor Wu as his assistant."
Rao Jie was taken aback and didn't know how to respond or explain. To be precise, she was just a familiar face brought along; she couldn't even be called an assistant since she wasn't studying mathematics.
After thinking for a moment, Rao Jie felt it would be better to clarify, but just as she was about to speak, Wu Rong suddenly returned to her side, placed a hand on her shoulder, and said to Long Yong, "She’s not an assistant; she’s here as my companion."
The smile on Long Yong's face instantly faded by half.
Wu Rong didn’t dwell on it but turned to the stunned Rao Jie and asked, "Can we go now?" After saying that, he took the lead and walked away.
Rao Jie stammered in response and hurriedly followed Wu Rong. Long Yong stood there in a daze, watching the two walk away. Once again, Rao Jie left him like this—directly called away by Wu Rong.
...
"Hey! Did I just see Rao Jie?" He Dong asked as he returned to the elevator after seeing off the guests.
Long Yong replied with a faint "mm."
"But... how could she be with Professor Wu? Does Professor Wu not think highly of us as assistants and choose an undergraduate from another department instead?" He Dong pondered.
Long Yong slightly furrowed his brows and said, "She’s said to be a companion, not an assistant."
"Female, female, female... companion?" He Dong stuttered upon hearing this.
"It must be a misunderstanding. Professor Wu is pure and detached from worldly affairs, okay? I heard recently that the class flower in our class threw flowers at Professor Wu, but he didn't accept them. Rao Jie... it can't be true!"
Long Yong turned to He Dong and said, "What are you thinking? A companion is not the same as a girlfriend."
He Dong raised an eyebrow and replied, "Am I overthinking? Or do you have doubts in your heart as well?"
Long Yong was silent for a moment before saying, "She calls him Professor Wu and calls me Senior; they are similar titles, so they mean the same thing."
"What do you mean by the same?" He Dong asked in confusion.
Long Yong smiled wryly and said, "They both imply that they are outsiders!"
He Dong thought for a moment and nodded, "That's true. Someone might introduce a partner to Professor Wu tonight!"
"Really?" Long Yong asked in surprise.
He Dong nodded, "Yes, really. I overheard it when I was at the principal's office. After all, Professor Wu is handsome, single, and talented; it's normal for someone to have their eye on him!"
Long Yong immediately felt relieved. For some reason, Wu Rong's earlier behavior made him a bit wary.
It felt... like Wu Rong showed possessiveness towards Rao Jie.
Hopefully, he was just being overly sensitive.
