Lin Ruoxue gently knocked on the door and softly asked, "Nian Nian, are you there? It's me, Ruoxue."
"Come in," Su Niannian's clear voice came from inside the room.
Lin Ruoxue pushed the door open and saw Su Niannian sitting by the window, sunlight casting a warm glow on her fair face, outlining her soft features. She held a book in her hands but wasn't turning the pages, seemingly lost in thought.
"Nian Nian, you finally came back!" Lin Ruoxue hurried over to Su Niannian's side, her eyes filled with concern. She reached out to hold her hand but was subtly avoided by Su Niannian.
Su Niannian put down the book and looked up at Lin Ruoxue, a meaningful smile playing at the corners of her mouth. "Yes, I'm back."
"Are you okay? I heard about you... sigh, it's all that bastard Zhang Qiang's fault!" Lin Ruoxue said, her eyes slightly reddening as if genuinely saddened for Su Niannian.
Su Niannian looked at Lin Ruoxue's hypocritical expression and sneered inwardly. In her past life, she had been deceived by this pitiful appearance of Lin Ruoxue, which led her to trust her completely, ultimately resulting in her family's ruin.
"I'm fine; it's all in the past," Su Niannian said lightly, her tone devoid of any emotion.
"Nian Nian, are you really planning to break up with Zhang Qiang?" Lin Ruoxue asked tentatively.
"Yes, I've made my decision," Su Niannian replied firmly without hesitation.
"But you've been together for so long..." Lin Ruoxue wanted to persuade her further but was interrupted by Su Niannian.
"Ruoxue," Su Niannian stood up and walked to the window, her tone calm yet carrying a hint of coldness. "There are some things I don't want to mention again or delve into. Do you understand what I mean?"
Lin Ruoxue looked at Su Niannian's back and felt a sudden jolt in her heart as an inexplicable unease surged within her.
Su Niannian's gaze was too clear, as if she could see through everything, making Lin Ruoxue feel guilty and lower her head.
"Nian Nian, what are you talking about? I don't understand..." Lin Ruoxue's voice trembled slightly as she tried to mask her inner turmoil.
Su Niannian turned around and walked up to Lin Ruoxue, a playful smirk forming on her lips. "Ruoxue, do you really want to know? Some things, once spoken out loud, can never return to how they were."
"I..." Lin Ruoxue opened her mouth but didn't know what to say.
Su Niannian's attitude frightened her; she dared not press further. Instead, she feigned calmness and changed the subject. "Nian Nian, you've really changed; you wouldn't have treated me like this before."
"Is that so? Perhaps," Su Niannian replied indifferently as she walked over to the table and picked up a glass of water, taking a light sip. "People always change, don't they?"
Lin Ruoxue watched Su Niannian's profile with growing unease.
She could feel that Su Niannian was no longer the innocent and kind girl she used to be.
"Nian Nian, are you still mad at me? That day at the bar..." Lin Ruoxue tried to explain what happened that day but was interrupted again by Su Niannian.
"I don't remember what happened that day," Su Niannian said in a flat tone, yet there was an undeniable firmness in her voice.
Lin Ruoxue was taken aback, feeling even more flustered. She tried to find a crack in Su Niannian's expression but discovered that her gaze was calm and unruffled, revealing no emotions at all.
"Ruoxue, I'm tired and want to rest for a while," Su Niannian said as she set down her cup, a hint of weariness in her tone.
Lin Ruoxue realized she wouldn't be able to get any useful information from Su Niannian today and could only stand up to leave.
"Then you rest well; I'll be going now."
As Lin Ruoxue reached the door, she paused and said, "Don't worry, I'll talk to Zhang Qiang for you." She forced herself to sound calm before turning to leave.
Su Niannian watched Lin Ruoxue's departing figure, a cold smile curling at the corners of her mouth.
The fish had already taken the bait; now, it was time to reel it in. She picked up her phone and dialed a number: "The plan can begin."
