It was break time, and seeing no one around, I slumped over the table in a daze. There were all kinds of ghosts and spirits here, but there were very few like me who resembled humans.
"Hello, my name is Xiaopu. You are Xi Meng, right?" I jolted awake and immediately looked up at the source of the voice. Wow, a girl with furry ears and a long tail, looking so cute that she resembled my doll. I couldn't help but smile at her.
"Yes, Xiaopu." She was just too adorable; it was the first time I had seen someone so cute.
"I'm also a new student this semester, but I'm already quite familiar with this place. Let me show you around; feel free to ask me anything you don't understand."
"Sure! I was just wondering what to do."
As soon as we stepped out of the classroom, I felt uneasy because the surrounding ghosts kept staring at me. Didn't they say my soul form was similar to theirs? Was there something wrong? I gently tugged at Xiaopu's sleeve and whispered, "Xiaopu, why are they looking at me like that? Is something wrong with me?"
Xiaopu looked at me thoughtfully and said, "Let's walk and talk."
We found a quieter spot where there were only a few practicing spirits. I sat down on the grass, looking at Xiaopu in confusion.
"Actually, I'm a bit curious about your aura; it's very strange. You don't seem like a spirit, nor do you have the eerie energy typical of ghosts, yet you can take on human form. I can't figure out what you are. But everyone here has their secrets; if you don't want to share, I won't pry."
What? So easily suspected? Was I in danger? "Xiaopu, do I really seem that strange?" I asked tentatively.
"Ah, I'm sorry. I didn't mean to say that. Our Cat Clan is quite sensitive; please don't take it to heart. I just blurted out what came to mind. Also, your scent is quite delightful."
"Xiaopu" said, and then seemed to feel it was inappropriate, quickly waving her hand and saying, "Ah, Xi Meng, I didn't mean that. I didn't mean to eat you."
I was taken aback. I am in human form because I am originally human; how can I explain this? I cannot say it. It seems I need to become stronger. This place does not allow killing, but I cannot live in the academy forever; I will eventually leave and encounter strong enemies. I should change the subject. "Actually, I don't know why I'm in this form either; maybe it's just natural. You can tell from my appearance that I've just left home."
Regarding the issue of human form, I had been told that humans are the most yearned-for beings in the world. Both soul and body are the perfect combination, but the downside is that they are the most restricted and relatively the weakest compared to all other dimensions, which often attracts greedy individuals.
"I don't understand much about this place, Xiaopu. Are the families here very powerful?"
"Yes, those who can come here definitely have some influence behind them. The most famous here is Prince Silvermoon; he is in the third grade. Most of his family's elders are strong figures from this Demon Emperor Silver Hall. His mother is a princess of the royal family, and his father is the dean here; they are the wealthiest and most powerful family. The second-ranked is someone named Nameless; he is on par with His Highness, and to this day we know nothing about his background. His talent is very high; he was brought here by last year's elder. He has a particularly reclusive personality but practices fiercely. We all call him 'Wild Ghost.' There are also some characters just below them that you will gradually get to know. However, there are also rare weak individuals like me who find it very difficult to come here; I am considered the last hope of our Cat Clan."
It seems that life here isn't so difficult after all; I need to become strong as soon as possible. Seeing me lost in thought, Xiaopu hurriedly said, "Actually, our Cat Clan used to be very powerful; it's just that now only I remain of the royal bloodline."
"Then Xiaopu, you are also a princess—Princess Xiaopu. Can you tell me about your family?"
"Don't joke around! With our small clan, even if we have royal blood, we can't compare with other big families. What princess? Here, I'm just an ordinary person. Since you want to know, I'll tell you, Xi Meng; I really want to be your friend. About three hundred years ago, our Cat Clan had a position among various families. We were peaceful and never went out or allowed outsiders in. Our leader was a strong individual; she was beautiful and kind. Later, an injured ghost came from somewhere; the kind princess took him in. This was the first time our clan saw an outsider ghost, and many young ones would go see him every day, pestering him to talk about the outside world. He had a good temper and patiently treated every child; over time everyone grew fond of him and wanted him to stay here. But he said he had his own family and had to leave, even though he liked it here. Before leaving, the princess and several elders spoke with him once, hoping he wouldn't tell any outsiders about our Cat Clan. He agreed. We thought that would be the end of it, but who knew this treacherous ghost took away our most respected princess? In just one night, our Cat Clan fell into chaos as those outsider ghosts went on a rampage, taking everything from us. Just when everyone thought we were going to be exterminated, the princess returned and said she was sorry; she was a sinner of the Cat Clan. In the end, she self-destructed along with all those ghosts at that time. So for hundreds of years now, no strong individuals have emerged from our Cat Clan; we have been oppressed ever since. This time I could enter Demon Emperor Silver Hall only because our clan's elders pleaded for a long time for me to come in; therefore, I must become strong."
I didn't expect this small figure to bear such great responsibility. If possible, I would definitely help her; it's just that I'm not strong right now either. "Xiaopu, let's work hard together for our mission."
"Okay! Xi Meng! They all look down on me; several times I've wanted to give up and go back, but the elders said that I would gain a lot from being here and that a true friend who would help me would appear. As soon as you arrived, I knew it had to be you—Xi Meng—you are different from them." Xiaopu smiled; this was the smile she should have—the burdens were too heavy for her. In this not-so-bright place, we exchanged smiles; friendship seemed so simple—understanding each other.
Look at me here; I'm doing well and have made friends. I'm waiting for you to come pick me up.
