“Xu Yi, we should break up!” Jian Chen said coldly to the screen.
Xu Yi looked at the phone, where the call duration read 18 minutes and 20 seconds, and tears streamed down her face.
On July 24, 203, the day Xu Yi received her admission letter from University A, was also the day she broke up with Jian Chen. The moon that night was a beautiful crescent, shining brightly. Although it didn’t rain, the air felt particularly cold and lonely.
Now, let’s rewind to June 1, 202, three months before their senior year.
A City High School playground
“Xu Yi, Xu Yi, we have a physical fitness test today. I can’t run; what should I do?” Bai Jinxi cried as she grabbed Xu Yi’s hand.
“Don’t worry, I’ll push you from behind; I promise you won’t stop,” Xu Yi said as she began to push Bai Jinxi toward the playground.
“Ah, Xu Yi, Xu Yi, why are you doing this? I can’t handle it; slow down! If you push me like this, how will I have any energy left to run later?” Bai Jinxi complained with a pout.
The sun blazed overhead, making the track feel scorching hot, yet the people on the playground seemed unfazed.
“I can’t believe we still have a fitness test so close to graduation. At least we don’t have classes today; that’s not too bad,” Xu Yi said as she shielded her eyes from the sun.
“What’s the point? Running in this heat is torture. Isn’t it better to just sit in the classroom with the air conditioning?” Bai Jinxi leaned against Xu Yi’s shoulder impatiently.
“Oh please, you’re always sitting in class with me; it’s so boring. It’s good to get some exercise outside, you lazy bum,” Xu Yi teased as she pinched Bai Jinxi’s cheek.
"Alright, get up, it's time to run," Xu Yi said, shrugging his shoulders.
"I know, I know! But you have to push me while we run, no cheating!" Bai Jinxi linked her arm with Xu Yi's.
3, 2, 1, go. With the sound of a gunshot, the students on the track dashed toward the finish line under the blazing sun.
One minute passed, and Xu Yi stayed close behind Bai Jinxi, worried she might not be able to keep going.
"Xu Yi! Xu Yi! I can't do it anymore! I'm too tired! Help me!" Bai Jinxi panted as she ran behind him.
Hearing this, Xu Yi chuckled lightly and pushed her to keep moving forward.
"You know, if you had exercised more regularly, you wouldn't need my help during the physical test. What if we end up at different universities in the future? Who will help you then?" Xu Yi said as he pushed Bai Jinxi along.
Bai Jinxi replied, "Oh come on, we'll both get into the same university, won't we?"
Xu Yi looked at her and laughed softly. "That's true. It would be quite troublesome to shake off a clingy friend like you. After all, we've been best friends since childhood."
"Hehe, as long as you know! Trying to get rid of me? Not in this lifetime! I'm sticking with you!" Bai Jinxi grinned mischievously.
"Alright, enough talking! Save your energy and run faster!" Xu Yi said with a smile.
After the physical test ended, Bai Jinxi successfully passed with Xu Yi's help.
The school bell rang, and Xu Yi and Bai Jinxi headed home for dinner together.
On the way, Bai Jinxi asked Xu Yi if she had been on the forum recently to chat with "Star" (the username of Jian Chen on the forum).
"No, I haven't. I've had a lot of homework lately, and my mom enrolled me in an after-school tutoring class, so by the time I get home at night, I just don't feel like going on the forum to chat with him," Xu Yi said, scratching her head.
"Are you not worried that your Star might get taken away by someone else?" Bai Jinxi teased Xu Yi with a sly grin.
"What do you mean 'your Star'? Watch your wording! We're just online friends, not in that kind of relationship. Don't stir things up," Xu Yi replied, her face turning red as she pointed at Bai Jinxi.
Bai Jinxi smirked like a fox and said to Xu Yi, "Oh come on, I know! Not your Star, hahahaha, and you're even shy about it."
Just as Xu Yi was about to chase after her, Bai Jinxi turned and dashed toward her home.
"Xu Yi, good luck! Be careful or he really might become someone else's!" Bai Jinxi shouted before heading inside.
Xu Yi thought to herself that it was true; she hadn't contacted Star on the forum for several days. She decided she would check the forum tonight.
