When Mo Xiaohui woke up, she found Li Nan beside her and couldn't help but exclaim, "How could this be?"
Li Nan smiled and replied, "Why not?"
Mo Xiaohui looked around in confusion and realized that the surroundings seemed somewhat familiar; she was lying on a stretcher in the corridor of the Emergency Department. Beside her, Li Nan was leaning over, examining her injuries.
This scene was clearly a replay of the moment when Mo Xiaohui had asked Li Nan earlier, but now the roles had switched dramatically.
Thinking about this, Mo Xiaohui suddenly found it amusing and forgot about the strange events that had just occurred.
"Isn't it fun?" Li Nan said, watching Mo Xiaohui's big eyes darting around. He added playfully, "You have a little injury on your foot; just apply some Yunnan Baiyao, and it will be fine. However, I'm not skilled in dealing with mental trauma, so I can't help you with the fright you experienced!"
Li Nan's words reminded Mo Xiaohui of her eerie encounter in the hallway, causing her to pale and mumble, "I saw a ghost in the hallway. Do you believe me?"
Li Nan found it amusing. "The stairs over there lead down to the Morgue. It's not surprising to see a ghost at such a late hour. But how did you think to go down there?"
Knowing that Li Nan didn't believe her, Mo Xiaohui vividly recounted what had happened. However, Li Nan remained unconvinced and said, "You previously asked me if I believed in zombies and now you're asking about ghosts. How should I respond?"
Mo Xiaohui lay sideways on the stretcher, turning her face toward Li Nan as she slowly said, "It's hard to say whether ghosts exist. However, what just happened might prove my earlier claim that there are indeed zombies in this world. Otherwise, how would you explain the sounds I heard coming from the Morgue?"
Li Nan explained, "The stairway on the south side was deemed impractical during its design and was later abandoned. The large iron door you encountered has long been sealed. It's not surprising if there are big rats or cockroaches there since no one has been there for a while. Perhaps the sounds you heard were made by those creatures!"
Mo Xiaohui didn't want to dwell on this issue any longer and simply asked, "Since that stairway has been abandoned, why did that yellow wooden door open so easily? Shouldn't it have been locked?"
Li Nan chuckled, "There used to be a sign indicating it was closed off, but it's probably been taken away by the cleaning staff tonight! As for why it wasn't locked, maybe the hospital wanted to save money on a lock to support its medical facilities!"
Mo Xiaohui burst into laughter, shaking off her earlier gloom as she said, "You really know how to talk!"
Li Nan scratched his head awkwardly. "I've already treated your foot; how does my bandaging look?"
While running through the hallway earlier, Mo Xiaohui had lost one of her shoes and had some abrasions on her foot.
Sitting up slightly, she looked at her left foot wrapped in two layers of gauze and gratefully said, "Thank you!"
Li Nan showed no signs of embarrassment and boldly said, "It's quite late now, and you have an injury on your foot. How about I give you a ride home?"
Mo Xiaohui hesitated for a moment, then nodded and said, "Okay!" Her voice was soft yet pleasant, which made Li Nan's heart flutter.
Mo Xiaohui had come to Jiangbei Hospital tonight to ask Li Nan about some details regarding the Beiyuan Square Incident. However, she unexpectedly encountered a frightening situation at the hospital and now found herself needing a man she had known for only a few hours to take her home. This was indeed quite dramatic.
Li Nan appeared heroic, seemingly unaffected by the concussion he had suffered, as he supported Mo Xiaohui and helped her down from the stretcher.
One of Mo Xiaohui's high heels had fallen in the abandoned corridor, and with her left foot injured and bandaged, walking was not an option. At that moment, Li Nan volunteered, saying, "How about I carry you?"
The timing was perfect for Li Nan, leaving Mo Xiaohui with no choice unless she wanted to spend the night in the hospital.
Looking at Li Nan's serious face, Mo Xiaohui thought to herself, "He is being sincere; it's just me who is overthinking it!"
As a host at Jiangbei Television Station, Mo Xiaohui was seen as the embodiment of wisdom and beauty. Although many admired her, few dared to express their feelings because she had high standards and most men felt inferior in her presence. Therefore, Li Nan's offer surprised Mo Xiaohui; no man had ever offered to take her home before.
"It seems I don't have much of a choice," Mo Xiaohui joked, trying to mask a hint of pleasure in her heart.
"Where do you live? I'll take you back!"
Mo Xiaohui stepped off the stretcher, kicked off her remaining high heel shoe, and said, "Over by Binh Jiang Avenue!"
Li Nan clicked his tongue; indeed one lived in luxury while the other was struggling. The area around Binh Jiang Avenue was prime real estate! Meanwhile, he was just a common person renting in Beiyuan Community—completely different worlds!
A rich beauty like her was best left alone, Li Nan thought to himself. However, he didn't say that out loud: "Miss Mo, Binh Jiang Avenue is quite far away. At this hour, it might be hard to catch a cab. Why not come to my place? It's just a ten-minute walk from Beiyuan Community!"
Mo Xiaohui retorted angrily, "Going to your place would be like a sheep entering a tiger's den!"
Li Nan received a light slap from Mo Xiaohui on his back but felt quite pleased. "It's nice to tease a beautiful woman occasionally; why worry about the outcome?"
Facing Li Nan, Mo Xiaohui felt no sense of caution. His heroic deeds had won her over; he had saved her when she needed help. They were of similar age, and unlike most doctors who were rigid, Li Nan was easygoing. Thus, Mo Xiaohui felt comfortable with him and treated him like a friend as they chatted freely.
Li Nan was also in high spirits, thinking that behind him was a beauty, which meant he had to be slightly more handsome, slightly more charming, and slightly more cultured; otherwise, he would just be seen as a joke, like Zhu Bajie carrying a beautiful woman! Li Nan couldn't help but smile.
As Li Nan and Mo Xiaohui descended the stairs, Li Nan teased, "This is the way out of the hospital. Don't get lost in some Spider Cave again!"
Mo Xiaohui pouted, "I will never come to a place like this again!"
Li Nan leaned down slightly, using his back to support himself while his hands playfully poked at Mo Xiaohui's thigh. He then said, "With minor colds, major flu, marriage check-ups, and childbirth—there's no way you can escape any of these. So, you see, you can't avoid hospitals in your life, which means you can't avoid me either!"
Upon hearing this, Mo Xiaohui's face suddenly flushed. Facing Li Nan's blatant teasing, she retorted, "You're just an Intern Doctor. Wait until you become an attending physician before saying that!"
As soon as she said it, Mo Xiaohui realized she had misspoken; that wasn't really a retort but rather an agreement!
Li Nan felt warmth in his heart and thought: If I don't consider the vast difference in our social status and hadn't met Gao Xue first, your words might have truly stirred something in me!
"Don't worry; I will become an attending physician sooner or later. I am destined to be a man's attending physician!" Li Nan chuckled and turned his head to continue, "We're about to leave the hospital. Let me see if there are any taxis outside!"
When Mo Xiaohui heard Li Nan's words, her heart suddenly trembled. This man before her might actually be quite good!
At the hospital entrance, Li Nan looked around. Besides a few flickering streetlights, there wasn't a taxi in sight. He absolutely refused to walk back to Riverside Avenue with Mo Xiaohui but found himself unable to run after her since he also walked to work.
Mo Xiaohui was resting on Li Nan's back and noticed his apparent anxiety; she couldn't help but giggle, leaving Li Nan feeling perplexed.
"You can't get home and you're still laughing? I don't know what you're thinking!" Li Nan pretended to jolt a bit as if punishing the girl on his back.
"Am I supposed to say I drove here?" Mo Xiaohui replied innocently.
"Damn!" Li Nan couldn't help but curse. "If you have a car, why didn't you say so earlier? Were you trying to mess with me?"
Mo Xiaohui couldn't stop laughing. "You never asked! It's that red one over there in the parking lot!"
Following Mo Xiaohui's direction, he spotted a red Lamborghini parked in the outer lot—it was particularly eye-catching. Li Nan muttered to himself: How could a television host live on Binh Jiang Avenue and drive a Lamborghini? What is this girl’s true identity? Could she be some wealthy man's adopted daughter?
Thinking of this, Li Nan felt a sense of disappointment in his heart. "What a pity, a good cabbage has been pushed by a pig!"
Mo Xiaohui asked, "Who is the cabbage and who is the pig?"
Li Nan laughed and said, "There is neither cabbage nor pig!" He then carried Mo Xiaohui towards the red Lamborghini.
As they approached the Lamborghini, Li Nan's eyes glanced to the side, and he was taken aback to find Han Guang's police van parked nearby.
"What’s going on? Is Han Guang in the car?" Li Nan felt it was strange but didn’t show it because of Mo Xiaohui behind him.
Li Nan wanted to go around the police van but was stopped by Mo Xiaohui noticing something odd. "We should go this way; it's the closest route!"
Li Nan forced a smile and braced himself to pass by the police van. Just as he got close, someone stepped out of the van and said towards Li Nan, "Mr. Li, we meet again!"
Upon closer inspection, it was indeed Han Guang. Li Nan forced a smile and asked, "Captain Han, are you on duty? It’s late at night; the area near the hospital isn’t a good place to be!"
Li Nan had no idea what Han Guang meant, but with a beauty behind him, he wouldn’t fall behind in front of another man. So he spoke a bit more forcefully, though it was all just for show.
Han Guang smiled and said, "I suppose you could say I’m on duty! What do you mean by that…"
Before Han Guang could continue asking, bright lights suddenly illuminated both sides of the main road near the hospital, making it hard for Li Nan and the others to open their eyes.
With half-closed eyes, Li Nan heard the sound of rolling wheels and caught a glimpse of dozens of dark green trucks out of the corner of his eye.
