At Longchuan Airport, a mother and daughter stood close together, their cold beauty attracting the attention of passersby. Several young men lingered nearby, hoping to find an excuse to approach the stunning woman. However, upon meeting the icy gaze in her eyes, they quickly retreated, content to admire her from a distance.
"Are you really not coming back with me?" Leng Qianqiu asked.
"Um, I want to stay," Lijie replied, her eyes red and clearly having cried recently.
"Why must you do this? Since he disagrees, why should we lower ourselves?" Leng Qianqiu said with a pained heart.
"I want to know why. If it’s truly for the reason his grandfather mentioned, I can forgive him."
"And if it’s not?"
"Then I will kill him myself!" Lijie declared, feeling her own conviction wavering as she spoke.
"Sigh, fine. Just be careful. Contact me if anything happens," Leng Qianqiu said as she patted her daughter's shoulder and turned toward the boarding gate.
Watching the plane take off down the runway, Lijie's heart sank as if it had plunged to the depths of despair.
Back at the Farm, Xin Yi had already put away his sadness. He was a rational and mature person who knew what he needed to do. For the past few days, he had been practicing diligently; only by strengthening his abilities could he uncover the identity of those who killed his parents and seek revenge. Only through revenge could he hope to achieve the ordinary life he dreamed of.
That morning, after finishing breakfast, he intended to continue practicing in the woods behind the Farm when he heard hurried footsteps on the wooden stairs. Following that was Shen Shanshan's voice calling out, "Xin Yi! You’re not still in bed, are you? So lazy! I've already run several dozen kilometers!"
"Lazybones! Get up! Come see what I brought you!" As she reached his door, Shen Shanshan called out again.
Xin Yi was just about to step outside when he stood behind the door and suddenly pulled it open. Shen Shanshan was startled and let out a loud scream, jumping back several feet.
"Oh my gosh, you scared me! I didn’t know you were up! Trying to give me a heart attack?" Shen Shanshan said, clutching her chest. Her delicate face was flushed red, whether from running or from being startled by Xin Yi was unclear.
"What brings you here?"
"What do you mean? Am I not welcome? Or did I interrupt something? Is there someone in your room?" Shen Shanshan pouted unhappily and leaned in to peek into the room.
"That's not what I meant. I was asking how you have time today?"
"You didn't even invite me in. Is there really someone in your room?" Shen Shanshan was still looking around.
"Please come in." Xin Yi stepped aside to let Shen Shanshan enter.
"So there's no one here? You had me so nervous." After entering, Shen Shanshan plopped down on Xin Yi's bed, her pout relaxing. "You haven't had breakfast yet, right? Look what I brought you!" Shen Shanshan raised the box in her right hand with a smile.
"Ahem, I've already had breakfast."
"No way! You've eaten? Well, it doesn't matter; you have to eat this too. I waited half an hour in line to get it, and I was worried it would get cold on the way here, so I kept it warm for you..." Shen Shanshan's words trailed off as she realized she had let something slip, and she quickly stopped talking, her face turning even redder.
"Can I eat it at noon instead? I'm really full right now." Xin Yi felt touched; he had never experienced such warmth from someone taking care of him.
"No way! It won't taste good if it gets cold by noon. Besides, I've already planned for lunch; we're going to eat Longchuan's specialty snacks." As she spoke, Shen Shanshan placed the box on the small table and opened it, a rich aroma immediately filling the small room.
Xin Yi usually made do with whatever food he could find. Although ten years of living alone had improved his cooking skills, he was tired of the same few dishes. Fortunately, he wasn't too picky about food; he just needed something to fill his stomach. But seeing this steaming hot and fragrant dish made his mouth water.
"Hurry up!" Shen Shanshan found a pair of chopsticks for herself and poured a glass of water for Xin Yi. When she saw him still standing there in a daze, she walked over and pulled his hand to sit down at the table. "Eat up!"
Xin Yi didn't hold back anymore; he picked up the chopsticks and started eating eagerly. Shen Shanshan moved a chair next to him and sat down, picking up Xin Yi's cup and blowing on it lightly while watching him eat with delight. She occasionally said affectionately, "Slow down! Be careful not to choke. Here, drink some water before you continue." She handed him the slightly cooled water.
Xin Yi took the cup and took a sip, giving Shen Shanshan a silly smile before diving back into his food. At that moment, Xin Yi looked like a big child while Shen Shanshan resembled a loving mother caring for him. If those who had been sent to heaven by Xin Yi saw this scene, they would probably spit blood in disbelief—how could such a childish person end their lives?
After letting out a long satisfied burp, Xin Yi finally put down his chopsticks. Shen Shanshan quickly handed him the water cup again and teased happily, "You said you had eaten already, but you ate like a starving wolf."
Wiping his mouth with the tissue that Shen Shanshan handed him, Xin Yi sincerely said, "Thank you, Shanshan. This is really delicious."
"Delicious? If it's good, I'll bring it to you every day from now on. Or maybe I'll go find that chef and learn how to make it myself," she paused before adding, "What’s this called? It's Longchuan City's exclusive delicacy called 'Virtuous Wife Stew.' How about it? Should I learn how to make it for you?" By the end of her sentence, her voice had become as soft as a whisper, her head deeply bowed.
"Ahem, Shanshan, weren't you going to visit my farm? How about we go out and take a look now?" Xin Yi intentionally changed the subject.
"Great! Let's set off now and see how this bourgeois Farm owner exploits the vast laboring masses." As soon as Xin Yi mentioned taking her on a tour, Shen Shanshan became excited again.
The weather was particularly nice, and the farmers in the Farm were happily working, all hoping that their hard work would yield a good harvest this year. Shen Shanshan curiously looked around, chatting with the farmers from time to time, like a beautiful butterfly flitting among various crops. Wherever they went, the farmers paused their tasks to greet them warmly: "Little Xin, you brought your girlfriend back? This girl is really beautiful, like a fairy. Little Xin has great taste!" They spoke with envy on their faces. A few older farmers directly asked, "Little Xin, are you married yet? If not, you better hurry up; you're not getting any younger. With such a pretty girl, if you don't act fast, she might fly away." Several aunties grabbed Shen Shanshan's hand: "Girl, our Little Xin is a rare good man. Not only is he kind-hearted, but he's also honest. We've never seen him bring a girl home before; his bringing you here shows how much you mean to him. You mustn't let this chance slip away." Faced with such goodwill, Xin Yi could only smile awkwardly, while Shen Shanshan blushed like a ripe tomato, responding with shy "mm-hmms" and stealing glances at Xin Yi, looking very much like a bashful and happy young bride.
The two of them continued chatting and laughing with the farmers along the way until they unknowingly arrived at the edge of the central Small Lake. There was a Wooden Bridge leading straight to the center of the lake, and at the end of the Wooden Bridge stood a Pavilion. Xin Yi often came to sit in the Pavilion when he had free time. Upon seeing this beautiful scene, Shen Shanshan exclaimed in delight: "Ah! This Small Lake is so beautiful! I wish I could live here forever!" As she spoke, she opened her arms and ran towards the Wooden Bridge. Xin Yi shook his head helplessly as he watched her joyful figure slowly stroll along the shore of the Small Lake.
Shen Shanshan had already reached the middle of the Wooden Bridge, calling out and jumping: "Xin Yi, come over here! This Small Lake is so pretty!"
Seeing Shen Shanshan excitedly bouncing on the Wooden Bridge like a child, Xin Yi shouted to her: "Shanshan, be careful; this bridge isn't sturdy!"
"Where's it not sturdy? I think it's just fine! Look, I'm jumping and nothing's happening! Are you afraid I'll break your bridge? You're so stingy; I'm going to jump!" As she spoke, Shen Shanshan jumped even higher.
The bridge was made entirely of wood, and years of rain and wind had caused the once sturdy wood to start rotting. It couldn't withstand Shen Shanshan's antics for long; after just a few jumps, one of the wooden planks beneath her feet couldn't bear the weight anymore. With another heavy landing from Shen Shanshan, that plank broke with a loud crack. She stepped into thin air and let out a startled "Mom!" before plunging into the lake. Since she had been jumping forcefully, this fall accelerated her descent into the water. She gulped down several mouthfuls of lake water as she sank...
While walking along the shore of the lake, Xin Yi suddenly heard a splash and quickly looked up to find that Shen Shanshan had disappeared without a trace, leaving only ripples spreading across the surface of the water. At that moment, he couldn't care about anything else; he sprang into action and leaped several times to reach where she had fallen in before diving into the lake.
Fortunately, the water wasn't very deep. Xin Yi dove straight down to the bottom and saw Shen Shanshan flailing her arms and legs in panic as bubbles kept rising from her mouth and nose. He quickly swam over and wrapped his arms around her chest from behind, lifting nearly unconscious Shen Shanshan back to the surface...
