The day I died, he brought her home. They kissed on my sofa, playing with the game console I had given him, as if I had never existed. I watched him gently wipe her face and massage her sore shoulders, something he had never done for me. This made me feel angry and jealous, yet powerless to stop it. I scoffed; it turned out I was the one who was unnecessary. The ridiculous part was that he still didn’t know I was dead.
“ Chen Xiaoxiao, why don’t you go keep Lily company?” he suddenly asked. In the dim light, his gaze was chillingly cold, as if he were looking at a corpse.

Chen Feng's sudden words sent a jolt through my soul, and an inexplicable hope surged within me. Did he know I had become a spirit? Was he still thinking of me?
I floated eagerly in front of him, wanting to touch his face and feel his warmth. However, Chen Feng’s gaze passed over me and landed on a fluffy little dog nestled in Chen Xiaoxiao's arms.
It was a Golden Retriever, lazily lying on Chen Xiaoxiao's lap, enjoying her petting.
A wave of immense disappointment washed over me as I realized that when Chen Feng mentioned “me,” he was referring to the pet dog he had given to Chen Xiaoxiao, named after me.
Chen Xiaoxiao was holding my favorite Pink Plush Pillow from my lifetime and timidly replied, “She doesn’t seem to like me very much.”
As she spoke, her eyes flickered, and her fingers nervously rubbed the tassels on the Pillow, seemingly trying to mask some inner emotion. This further ignited my anger; an unnamed fire blazed fiercely in my soul's chest.
I wanted to loudly question Chen Xiaoxiao, to tell her to get out of my home, to demand she return my Pillow. But I couldn’t make a sound; I could only watch helplessly as Chen Xiaoxiao occupied everything that belonged to me.
Suddenly, a gust of cold wind swept through the room, causing the lights to flicker and emit a buzzing sound.
The curtains billowed with the wind, resembling a spirit drifting through the air.
Chen Xiaoxiao screamed in fright, dropping the Pillow on the floor. She tightly nestled into Chen Feng's arms, trembling. "What’s happening?" she asked in terror, her face pale and her eyes filled with fear.
Chen Feng scanned the surroundings warily, his brow furrowed as if sensing something unusual.
He gently patted Chen Xiaoxiao's back, trying to soothe her. "Don't be afraid, it might just be a circuit malfunction," he whispered, though there was a hint of tension in his tone.
He stood up and walked to the window to check the lock, then moved to the door to ensure it was securely closed.
His series of actions revealed a sense of unease and vigilance, as if he felt an unknown danger approaching.
Watching Chen Feng's tense demeanor, I couldn't help but feel a sense of satisfaction.
I knew that the sudden chill and flickering lights were caused by me.
Although I couldn't communicate with them directly, I could influence the environment around them and create small "accidents."
I floated behind Chen Feng, a cold breath brushing against his neck. He instinctively shrank his shoulders and reached back to touch the nape of his neck. "It's really cold," he murmured to himself before turning back to Chen Xiaoxiao and adjusting the air conditioning temperature a few degrees higher.
Chen Xiaoxiao remained tightly nestled in Chen Feng's embrace, her eyes wide with fear as she looked around. "I'm still scared," she said tremulously, her voice tinged with a hint of crying. "Maybe... we should stay at a hotel."
Chen Feng gently stroked Chen Xiaoxiao's hair and comforted her softly, "It's okay, don't be afraid. I'm here." He glanced at the Pillow on the floor, bent down to pick it up, and handed it to Chen Xiaoxiao. "Here you go." His tone was gentle yet firm, though a complex emotion flickered in his eyes.
I watched Chen Feng holding the Pillow, a sharp pain surged in my heart.
That was her favorite Pillow, still lingering with her scent. She wanted to reach out and snatch it away, but could only watch helplessly as Chen Feng placed the Pillow back into Chen Xiaoxiao's arms.
Chen Xiaoxiao took the Pillow and held it tightly, as if grasping a lifeline. Her gaze gradually regained its calm, and a barely noticeable smile appeared on her face.
Chen Feng picked up his phone and made a call. "Hello, please book me a hotel room, something quiet," he said before hanging up. He then turned to Chen Xiaoxiao and said, "Let's go."
Chen Xiaoxiao nodded and stood up to follow Chen Feng out of the apartment. I silently floated behind them, watching them leave. I looked at their tightly clasped hands, filled with helplessness and despair.
I knew I could never return to their lives. I was just a soul, a forgotten soul.
I floated to the window, watching the taxi below grow smaller and smaller as it drove away. I reached out my hand, wanting to grasp something, but ultimately caught only emptiness.
