Qi Chao felt weak and frail.
Du Yuetang brought some tonics over, speaking earnestly, "Sister, you should drink some supplements."
Qi Chao was exhausted and restless; after drinking the tonic, she began to feel drowsy again.
Suddenly, she heard Yuetang excitedly say, "Sister, the Emperor has gone to interrogate Feng Chengqian. Do you think they will execute him this time?"
Qi Chao felt a chill run through her. "Yuetang, you..."
"As long as he dies, I can rest easy. Aren't you happy for me, Sister? It’s worth it for me to secretly provoke him into a desperate situation."
Du Yuetang's delicate face twisted with malice. "No one will suspect Bo'er’s identity, as long as... you die too!"
"You..." Qi Chao looked at Du Yuetang in disbelief. How had she changed so much?
"Do you know how much I hate you? From the very beginning, my only enemy has been you! That Consort Li is nothing to me!"
Du Yuetang slapped Qi Chao hard, gritting her teeth in fury. "Don’t think I don’t know that you deliberately spilled wine on me to attract Feng Chengqian's attention."
"I didn't, I..."
"You’re too clever. I relied on your help but had to guard against you as well. But I never expected you would seduce the Emperor!"
Du Yuetang was nearly frantic. "Why do you have to steal every man I like? Why can’t I kill you no matter what I do?"
Qi Chao slapped her back, forcing her to calm down. "Du Yuetang, you've gone mad! I owe you nothing!"
"Sister, do you remember? In the past, everything I had, you had too. But from what point on did everything change so that what you have, I no longer possess?"
She hated! She wanted power, status, to be high above all! She would stop at nothing!
Qi Chao Xi felt cold sweat bead on her forehead, and a sharp pain twisted in her stomach. "What did you give me...?"
"Poison," Du Yuetang sneered. "As long as you're here, the Emperor will never notice me."
Although the Emperor had been indifferent to Qi Chao Xi recently, Du Yuetang could see clearly that he could not let go of her. Otherwise, three years ago, after Qi Chao Xi had so foolishly toyed with him, he would not have kept her by his side. Qin Hao's concern for Qi Chao Xi surpassed everyone's imagination.
She had to cut off all possibilities.
Du Yuetang laughed, tossing aside a letter. After all these years of imitating Qi Chao Xi's handwriting, it finally had its use.
Qi Chao Xi grew weaker; it was a farewell letter, written in her name.
She had made a grave mistake and decided to follow Feng Chengqian in death.
Qi Chao Xi looked on and chuckled softly.
If he thought so, would it make things any better?
But she truly wanted to see him again—not to plead for Feng Chengqian, nor to mourn the loss of their child, but because he was the only one who had ever said he loved her and had clung to her for three long years without letting go.
She wanted to see him.
Oh, how she wanted to see him.
In Changchun Garden, two men raised their glasses. Feng Chengqian looked suspiciously at his companion. "Poisoned wine?"
"If you are willing to trade your life for the lives of the thirty-two members of the Feng family, I wouldn't mind."
Qin Hao said this, yet he did not dare to gamble. He could not use Qi Chao Xi as a wager.
Feng Chengqian raised an eyebrow. "What do you mean?"
Qin Hao's expression turned serious. "I want you to leave the capital and never return, and never see Qi Chao Xi again."
Feng Chengqian chuckled lightly. "Just like three years ago when you used Qi Chao Xi's life to threaten me? Back then, Qin Hao demanded that he go on a diplomatic mission to a neighboring country, or else he would kill Qi Chao Xi immediately. It seems now that he couldn't bear to kill her, even if it was just a lie to placate her."
Feng Chengqian grew increasingly confused. "Wouldn't it be simpler to just kill me?"
"Killing you would make her hate me."
Feng Chengqian laughed softly, suddenly enlightened. "The only thing I wanted to compete with you for was Qi Chao Xi."
But now, he realized he could no longer compete.
Before Qin Hao could lose his temper, Feng Chengqian said, "I will leave."
It wasn't that he loved her any less; rather, he discovered that without realizing it, someone had already taken his place in Qi Chao Xi's heart.
"Let me give you a piece of advice: be careful of Du Yuetang."
In the end, Feng Chengqian's warning came too late.
Qi Chao Xi had been deeply poisoned; although she had regained a life, her memories were muddled, and she wandered about like a child.
She would never be able to have children again.
Yet despite this, Qin Hao felt a deep sense of gratitude, especially as he looked into her eyes, which no longer held any distance or rejection.
Qi Chao Xi tugged at Qin Hao's stiff lips and said, "Hao Hao, you mustn't be mean to Yuetang; she will cry."
She remembered Du Yuetang, recalling the times they were punished together as children and how they grew up side by side.
Qin Hao couldn't bear to see her hurt, so he simply confined Du Yuetang to the cold palace.
Qin Hao's gaze softened. "Alright."
He teased her, "Who does Qi Chao Xi love?"
"Qi Chao Xi loves Qin Hao."
"Who does Qi Chao Xi want to be with for a lifetime?"
"Qi Chao Xi wants to be with Qin Hao for a lifetime."
Even if she didn't understand what love was, even if one day she would wake up and hate him, he didn't care. He only wished for her to stay within his reach, accompanying him day and night.
