I still hadn't heard my wish granted. After explaining that I was a new student just reporting in and hadn't yet paid for my meal card, the lady at the counter reluctantly allowed me to pay in cash. However, my three hundred dollars in savings, which I had saved up over the years, had been taken by that Pervert! After some persuasion, the lady finally believed me and agreed to let me settle the payment next time. Her gaze reminded me of the Boss's look when the Pervert was trying to get credit at the village restaurant.
It was late, and everyone in the cafeteria was preparing to close down, except for that big eater Sister, who still had a light on. I had no choice; if I didn't want to shove noodles up my nose, I could only sit across from her.
The cafeteria at J University was quite large, so once the lights were off, it could definitely be used for a horror movie. But who was I, Yin Zheng'an? I was a man who faced outward even while using the restroom! Ahem, eating wasn't really suitable for such thoughts. Anyway, what was there to be afraid of?
It seemed simple, but often daring doesn't equate to actually doing it. I wasn't afraid of the atmosphere; rather, I felt an inexplicable fear towards Sister. I had never been good at dealing with strangers, especially women—only under the influence of the Pervert did I start to become shameless. Today was my first real encounter with flirting with a girl, yet it ended up like this. Honestly, I felt a bit awkward.
When I finally sat down, I realized I had overthought things. Sister's eyes showed no awareness of my presence—only her food occupied her attention.
But sometimes people just love to make things complicated.
When she wasn't paying attention to me, I found myself wanting to catch her eye!
I secretly observed Sister; she was indeed quite pretty. Although she couldn't compare to Jin, she had a unique freshness about her. Her slightly pale skin indicated she wasn't wearing makeup, and her face was slim yet retained some baby fat. Her eyes weren't particularly large but were full of spirit; her lips, though not glossed, looked enticingly greasy from food. With her cheeks stuffed full of food, she resembled an adorable hamster. If Jin was an unattainable beauty, then this Sister was like the fresh girl next door.
I couldn't understand how such a beautiful girl could eat so much—was she a reincarnation of Glutton? Haha, how could that Glutton also be an artsy and fresh Sister? That would be too ridiculous!
I originally didn't want to meddle in others' business; Uncle Xing had already made it clear that this campus was an important base for their Heavenly Bureau of Human Affairs (isn't it important to have a base where criminals are present?). Besides, this Sister was one of my peers! Wasn't her eating method some sort of special training? (There is a training method where one eats a lot regularly and uses calories as chakra during battles.)
But then Sister suddenly looked up at me with one glance, and in that moment, I knew there was no escaping this situation.
Sister's eyes were green! No normal person's eyes would be green! Some cultivation practices can change eye color, but green is definitely not one of them. Green is the color of Ghost Fire; Ghost Fire is associated with spirits. In this world, only ghosts and snakes have green eyes!
I secretly flipped open one of the two books that the Pervert had given me before leaving. One book was "Strange Beasts," which recorded all the strange creatures mentioned in "Shan Hai Jing" along with their habits and weaknesses. The other book was "Shikigami Diagram," which documented all the great spirits that have appeared in the world and included illustrations.
Here it is: Killing Spirit. This spirit usually arises from suicide or accidents and seeks opportunities to possess people in order to fulfill uncompleted wishes from their lives. The possessed person typically shows no abnormalities but will be controlled when near the Killing Spirit's target; afterward, they have no memory of it.
It seems this Killing Spirit must have starved to death in its previous life; otherwise, it wouldn't control this girl to eat so voraciously here.
Sigh, it seems I have no choice but to get involved. Who told me to be so kind?
I quickly finished my noodles, grabbed a cup of water at the cafeteria entrance to clear my throat, and then hid at the stairway of the cafeteria. Although I was prepared to meddle in this matter, I knew I had to be discreet. There were still people inside the cafeteria; who knows if that Killing Spirit would act out of desperation? Moreover, this couldn't be made public. If the headline news was that I, Yin Zheng'an, caught a ghost, wouldn’t the world be thrown into chaos? So, no loud actions! Sneak in quietly!
Suddenly, the lights in the cafeteria went out, and I felt a tightness in my chest. Did something go wrong again? Could it be that Hungry Ghost had sensed me? But soon I relaxed; it turned out that the Cafeteria Aunt was leaving with a girl. It seemed the aunt could have left work long ago but was waiting for this girl.
The aunt and the girl didn’t exchange any words but walked out of the school gate together. It was evident that the girl must have rented a place off-campus. (Strange, this kid doesn’t know that the cafeteria charges fees but knows university students can rent their own places.)
There was a food street at the school gate. Although the girl had just eaten at the cafeteria, she still bought a bunch of food. Truly deserving of being called a Hungry Ghost. I followed behind her until we reached an empty alley. (Why does this feeling seem so familiar? Following someone? Ugh, too creepy.)
What normal person would wander into such an alley? Not even normal ghosts would come here. My guess was probably right; that Hungry Ghost had sensed me long ago.
“How long are you going to follow me?” The girl spoke up; my guess was correct—she had noticed me long ago. Oddly enough, her voice didn’t sound unusual; it was clear and slightly youthful. Could it be that I was overly suspicious and misjudged?
No, no, I've read enough ethics and classics; there has never been a case where normal pupils turned green. But since this Sister spoke up, I had to say something back.
"Sister, wait! Are you possessed by an Evil Spirit?" No, that’s too direct; she would definitely think I'm crazy.
"Stop! Let me help you?" That sounded like something a rogue would say; what am I doing?
After thinking for a while, I decided to use a simpler phrase: "I've been watching you for a long time." As soon as I said it, I regretted it—what kind of opening is that?
"Oh, thanks, but I don't like ugly people." Sister clearly had more experience than me—she took it as a confession. And who knows how many people she had rejected with that line.
Pfft! My heart felt like it suffered thousands of points of damage—not physical or magical but real emotional damage!
"Uh... never mind..." I gave up on explaining because I felt my ability to clarify wouldn’t suffice. "Just wait for me."
I formed a circular isolation space with my magic, so that people outside couldn't see us.
Sister tilted her head curiously at me; it must have been her first time witnessing someone jump to Deity after a failed confession.
The Eight Treasures Mystique is the most practical thing that Pervert has taught me over the years. It consists of eight types of spells, each one simple and practical. Of course, "simple" refers to their usage; any simple spell, when cultivated to its extreme, will no longer be simple. For example, the Spiritual Sight from the Eight Treasures Mystique that I am currently using. Spiritual Sight is considered a fundamental skill in Taoism; once cultivated, it allows one to see things invisible to ordinary people, such as ghosts! However, when Spiritual Sight is cultivated to its peak, it can even reveal a person's past lives. Of course, I do not possess such mastery yet.
Once I activated Spiritual Sight, just as I expected, there was a phantom floating behind Sister. That should be the Killing Spirit.
"Three Pure Edict, announce to Zheng Yuan: Humans and ghosts are on different paths; when the soul departs, Specter all around; Four Lives are blessed. Those with heads shall live, those without heads shall die; guns and knives kill; jumping into water or hanging by ropes; bright deaths and dark deaths; grievances and injustices lead to demise; good and evil karma must be borne by oneself; wealth and poverty are self-invited. Command all spirits to rise!" I formed a Kunli hand seal and recited a spell from the Soul Capture technique in the Eight Treasures Mystique.
The Soul Capturing Technique, one of the Eight Treasures Mystique, is divided into two parts: summoning souls and Soul Capture. Summoning souls is simply calling forth a spirit, while Soul Capture is different; it forcibly subdues the spirit. (Currently, I do not know how to perform Soul Capture; otherwise, this would be simple.) Different hand seals combined with different incantations yield completely different effects. The hand seal I performed was specifically designed to deal with possessing ghosts.
After completing the incantation, the phantom behind Sister flickered and was forcibly pulled out. Sure enough, it was indeed the Killing Spirit, and it was one filled with heavy Resentment; its facial features were even clearly visible. (The heavier the Killing Spirit and Resentment, the more it resembles its living form; being able to see its features indicates that the Resentment is exceptionally deep.)
Ha ha, watch how I heroically save the beauty!
"What are you doing? Are you crazy?"
Who is it? I looked up to see Sister glaring at me with her hands on her hips in anger. Oh no! I had forgotten about her. But how could someone who was captured by Soul Capture still stand there awake? This defies logic!
"If you don't give me a reasonable explanation, you're dead!" Sister declared.
