There were no other paths in this dark room.
But I had figured out a way.
Returning to the Inner Hall, I found several hidden buttons on the wall.
When I pressed the last one, I heard someone speaking inside.
The voice was too soft to make out the words, but it gave me hope.
I lifted my skirt and hurried down the stairs, moving deeper into the dark room.
Just halfway through, a cold dagger was pressed against my neck.
It didn't apply much force, just breaking the skin.
But it was enough to make me stop.
A hoarse voice came from behind me: "Who?"
"Yu Qing."
The dagger was removed, and someone helped me cover the wound on my neck.
But their fingers were cold, more uncomfortable than the pain itself.
I dodged away from them and covered it myself.
The voices inside also stopped.
Someone was approaching from this direction.
In the dim light of the corridor, I saw A Xian.
She was dressed in dark robes, having removed the golden phoenix crown from her head, simply tying her hair back with a jade hairpin.
"Sister?!"
She ran over and took my hand. "I was just discussing what to do with Second Brother."
Only then did I glance into the shadows beside us.
After eight years, He Yu had grown much taller.
I had to lift my face to barely make out his features.
He looked disheveled and unkempt.
His entire face showed a sickly pallor, even his lips lacked color.
"Have you come to a conclusion?"
I walked further inside.
A Xian followed closely beside me. "Not yet. The Dog Emperor has already been captured, but what should we do about the situation outside?"
I spotted Gao Huan.
He was tied up with ropes, lying on the ground.
Perhaps he heard my voice, as he strained to turn his head in our direction.
The moment he saw me, he shifted slightly.
But it was of no use.
His mouth, however, was not sealed.
"Yu Qing, you came to save me? I knew only you could make it here."
I looked at him coldly. "You're mistaken. I'm not here to save you; I'm with them."
Gao Huan's face showed a moment of confusion.
After that, he fell silent.
His lips had turned a shade of bluish-purple.
According to my previous calculations of the dosage, he wouldn't last much longer.
So, I needed to plan for the next step of the Da Sheng Dynasty.
"The outside world already knows he has disappeared; let Chang'er take his place," I said.
Gao Huan let out a laugh from the ground.
"Yu Qing, if you want Chang'er to ascend, just tell me. Why go about it this way?"
I couldn't be bothered to respond to him.
I continued speaking to A Xian, "I'm sorry to put you in this position, but you can't go out for now."
Gao Huan interjected, "Even if Chang'er is not my son, as long as he is yours, I am willing to give him more."
I couldn't hold back and slapped him across the face.
This slap had been pent up for too long, so I used all my strength when I struck.
My nails scratched Gao Huan's face, and blood spilled from the corner of his mouth.
He slowly licked the blood back, and when he smiled at me, his teeth were stained red.
"What? Am I wrong? All these years, you've been looking for him. Aren't you trying to find a father for the child?"
"Smack!"
I slapped him again.
This time, my arm went numb from the impact.
"Not everyone is as vile as you, doubting even their own biological son."
Gao Huan seemed to find it amusing.
"You say Chang'er is my son? Hahaha, Yu Qing, I am no longer an emperor; I am a prisoner bound by you all. There's no need to bother trying to deceive me."
This man was beyond saving.
I didn't want to look at him any longer.
"Let's talk somewhere else."
We tied up Gao Huan securely and moved to a lamp in the corridor.
At this point, I truly noticed something.
He Yu's gaze at me felt somewhat off.
It was too sticky.
Even more uncomfortable than when Gao Huan looked at me.
I tried to ignore it and spoke to A Xian.
But that gaze fixed on me gave me a snake-like feeling.
I had to face him and asked my confusion, "Second Young Master, is there something wrong with me?"
He Yu immediately recoiled, "No, you are not wrong."
"Then why do you keep staring at me?"
He couldn't articulate an answer.
Instead, he lowered his eyelids.
Without any distractions, I quickly clarified everything with A Xian and obtained a way to contact Chang'er.
After coming out of the dark room, I restored everything to its original state.
I then called for the palace servants to tidy up the Eternal Longevity Palace.
Then I returned to Xuan Ci Palace and changed into the court attire worn during the audience.
I first summoned the ministers and informed them that the Da Sheng could not be without a ruler for even a day. Now that the Sovereign was absent, I asked for their opinions.
While they were pondering, I met with the Chief of the Imperial Guards.
This person is my insider within the palace.
I instructed him to send a message outside the palace to bring Chang'er back.
The ministers had been confined in the palace for three days.
Without seeing their families and with no news, they were all like ants on a hot pan.
The moment I saw Chang'er, my eyes immediately lit up.
"The Empress is right; the nation cannot be without a ruler for even a day!"
In just a few days, the coronation ceremony for the New Emperor was completed.
Chang'er is young, and I should assist in governance.
After dealing with the mess left by Gao Huan, the Spring Examination had concluded, and the season had entered summer.
It was time to take a look at the man in the dark chamber.
