The cries of Ming Juan gradually faded away, and the timeline slowly pulled forward with her voice, returning to three years later in U City...
In this snow-covered ground, trampled into chaos by the Zombie Horde, a desperate and furious roar echoed. The force of the sound was so strong that it scattered the falling snowflakes, which seemed to dive towards the ground in a frantic attempt to hide from this calamity. That was Miao Chengmin, who had now become part of the Spirit Corps.
The song abruptly stopped as Ming Juan fell from a height after being ambushed by a Soulless Zombie. The Zombie King, Miao Chengmin, could only watch helplessly as his beloved fell. He was surrounded by Soulless Zombies, biting at him, and he couldn't find any leverage to move; his ability to teleport was completely suppressed.
"No! Ah—" The Zombie King managed to extend one hand through the mass of Soulless Zombies that tightly enveloped him, trying to catch Ming Juan who was falling in the distance. But what good would that do?
"Team An, where are you?" Putting down her sniper rifle, Nightmare Jiao An immediately activated the team communicator. "There's a girl falling from Miao Chengmin's side! Can someone go catch her?"
Before An Xiaotian could respond, a crowd had already gathered at the spot where Ming Juan landed.
"I estimate..." At this moment, An Xiaotian was still several streets away; it was indeed unlikely for him to fly over and save a falling girl. He could only turn his head toward that direction, his eyes filled with helplessness. They had all done their best to stop the Zombie Queen.
Fortunately, the Spirit Corps Legion arrived just in time at their leader Zombie King's location, right below where Ming Juan had just been. Hearing Miao Chengmin's call, George immediately realized that the girl falling above must be someone important to Miao Chengmin in life and decisively climbed up the wall!
"I'll catch her; you all catch us!" George instructed before leaping into the air without looking back.
Using the force of the building's wall, George jumped a few times before leaping into the air and catching the unconscious and rapidly descending Ming Juan. After holding onto the wall for a while, just as they were about to hit the ground, George used his body as a cushion for Ming Juan and pushed off from the wall to fly down. The other Spirit Corps members rushed forward with their hands outstretched, readying themselves for George's landing!
"Ugh!"
Fortunately, it felt like landing on a trampoline. George had prepared for an intimate encounter with the ground but found himself swaying back and forth in the hands of his Spirit Corps brothers and sisters before finally landing safely with Ming Juan.
"I caught her!" George released his grip on Ming Juan, who was severely disoriented but didn't dare let go of his hand on her back. A deep gash had been torn into Ming Juan's back by a Soulless Zombie, bleeding profusely. He supported Ming Juan and called out to the Spirit Corps members: "Go save Brother Miao; he's trapped by Soulless Zombies!"
If he were on solid ground, Miao Chengmin would have already taken off using leverage. But now he was suspended in mid-air, being pressed down by Soulless Zombies coming from both sides of the tall building; from afar, he looked like a giant cicada pupa hanging in an apocalyptic city.
"Mmm! Mmm..." Miao Chengmin could no longer speak due to being bitten; he wanted to land but couldn't reach it. Moreover, he could feel himself getting weaker as he was bitten more! The speed at which the Soulless Zombies tore at him was astonishing; even his Chaos Crystals couldn't keep up with the damage.
On the other side of the city, Madwoman, Divine Fist, and Nightmare were rushing over in their Hovercraft with Blue Face Hero who had fainted. Through the sniper scope, Nightmare could vaguely see the cicada pupa wrapping around Zombie King.
"An team, where are you?" Nightmare repeated her question.
"On my way; what's up?" Fierce Eagle's flight wings had broken upon landing earlier; now flying felt quite awkward due to unstable air currents causing him to tilt sideways occasionally.
"Go help Miao Chengmin; he seems to be in trouble."
"What about that girl you mentioned earlier?"
"The Spirit Corps caught her."
This was not quite what Fierce Eagle expected to hear; he almost forgot they had allies. After feeling surprised, he stabilized his armor's flight mode. The thruster jets on his back erupted with stronger thrusts as he sped over the dilapidated apocalyptic city below.
"Miao Chengmin, what's going on over there?"
A middle-aged man's voice echoed through the team channel. Xu Yicheng, although evacuated from the combat city with the refugees by the military, felt he belonged there. He longed to fight alongside the other Celestial Warriors to protect humanity with all his might.
Having just resolved the Hydrogen Bomb crisis and still catching his breath, Xu Yicheng stood inside the dark vehicle. All the refugees huddled together, gradually falling asleep, leaving only him and the driver, Liang Muqi, awake. Xu Yicheng gazed back at the struggling, dilapidated city, hoping for a response from his teammates.
"He's entangled with Soulless Zombies," Fierce Eagle An Xiaotian explained in the channel. "Do you have any ideas, Dr. Xu?"
"I think Aibo should have a solution," Xu Yicheng replied. "Aibo just contacted me through the Echo Stone and said he has arrived."
Given Miao Chengmin's current situation, Nightmare Jiao An and the others were hesitant to launch an attack for fear of hitting him by mistake. Meanwhile, Fierce Eagle An Xiaotian was still on the move, and his mechanical wings were damaged, making it difficult to aim. The best way to rescue Miao Chengmin was to throw something over, like tossing a stone into a swarm of flies; they would scatter quickly, and if lucky, some might get crushed.
Just as all the Celestial Warriors felt helpless, a whistling sound approached Miao Chengmin, who was surrounded by Soulless Zombies—
"Bang!"
"Ugh!" A muffled grunt escaped Miao Chengmin as he felt something hard send him flying. The object brushed past him and forcefully knocked him away from the Soulless Zombies.
The impact seemed to liberate Miao Chengmin; those frenzied Soulless Zombies on his right were instantly sent flying, while he himself was knocked off balance and fell to the ground! After rolling a few times on the ground, he finally broke free from the layer of Soulless Zombies that had encased him. A horde of Soulless Zombies screamed as they scattered in all directions.
"Ouch, heavens..." Miao Chengmin finally caught his breath. Gradually regaining his senses, he stood up and realized his body was riddled with bites, and one of his arms had been severed.
Fortunately, Chaos Crystals helped him recover quickly, and thankfully he felt no pain; even looking at himself was painful enough.
The one who saved him was not one of the Celestial Warriors he could recall but rather the last Stone Giant on Earth—Aibo.
When Aibo arrived, he witnessed Miao Chengmin being engulfed and Ming Juan falling. He hesitated for a long time before deciding to try throwing an anchor forcefully at the airborne corpse-like chrysalis. To his surprise, it worked quite well; it was indeed like throwing a stone into a swarm of flies that freed Miao Chengmin.
"Ming Juan!"
However, Miao Chengmin seemed unconcerned about who had saved him. With immense strength, he charged straight toward the Spirit Corps Legion.
"Brother Miao!" All members of the Spirit Corps instinctively made way for him as he rushed towards Ming Juan, who was bleeding profusely with George covering her wound. With a loud crash, Miao Chengmin landed from above, sending countless debris flying. He hurried forward and picked up Ming Juan's bleeding body; pain and heartbreak intertwined fiercely in his mind.
He knew that if he didn't stop Ming Juan's bleeding soon, she might bleed out!
"Darling, look at me! You're still here, right?" Miao Chengmin gently shook Ming Juan.
Even in his zombie-like state now, when Ming Juan heard his voice, she struggled to open her eyes. It had been three years; she knew Miao Chengmin was dead and that their love had no future. But...
"I really... miss you so much."
With her eyes barely opening a slit, Ming Juan desperately pushed her breath toward her lips just to squeeze out those words weakly.
"I miss you too... I miss you too..." Miao Chengmin gritted his teeth as he gently pressed Ming Juan's forehead against his decaying face. "If I could have another chance, I would absolutely never run into that fire again. I wish I could be with you..."
For three years since Miao Chengmin left this world, Ming Juan had often wondered what would have happened if Miao Chengmin had not been the savior in that fire, if he had not been the firefighting hero in the eyes of the people, if she had changed his mind back then and he had not chosen to become a firefighter...
But everything was beyond return now. They had once been the happiest couple in the world, sharing countless sweet moments. That time, which should have been peaceful, was destroyed in an instant by a great fire...
The most unforgettable thing in the world is love, and the most painful is also love. Watching the one she deeply loved being taken away by God, that heart-wrenching pain could only be understood by Ming Juan.
Countless nights of suffering, countless "what ifs" brought her back to reality again and again. With Miao Chengmin's departure, Ming Juan remained forever in that time when he was by her side, reliving those moments for a lifetime, laughing through tears for a lifetime, waiting for a lifetime.
"Brother Miao!" George patted the overly sorrowful Miao Chengmin. "The Soulless Zombies have regrouped!"
However, at that moment, Miao Chengmin had no heart to fight anymore. He looked down at the dazed Ming Juan; after three years, she was still so beautiful.
What Miao Chengmin hoped for now, and what sustained him from collapsing, was that this girl he had deeply cherished in this world would not die.
"Brother Miao!" Seeing that he couldn't rouse him, George ordered, "Comrades, protect Brother Miao and prepare for battle!"
But after just several hours of fighting, the number of Spirit Corps members was truly dwindling. Engaging now could easily lead to being overwhelmed by the chattering Soulless Zombies!
"You've done your best; leave it to us."
A roar of engines sounded overhead. The Spirit Corps looked up; Fierce Eagle had arrived, drawing his battle sword and landing before them. Behind the Soulless Zombies, a Hovercraft hovered above, seemingly looking down on the monsters. This overwhelming pressure made the Soulless Zombies hesitate.
"This is the last batch of zombies," Lu Sha said while looking at the detection panel inside the Hovercraft. "We’ll wrap things up soon!"
"Hopefully we can hold out until then," Qin Weishan said with a wry smile as he shrugged and put on his mechanical gauntlets, standing alongside Lu Sha at the cabin door.
