He shook his head vigorously, trying to rid himself of the chilling sensation.
It must be the stress from recent events, he reassured himself. The pressure from the serial murder case, the visual shock of the dismembered bodies on the Autopsy Table, and the anxiety and irritation caused by his wife's disappearance—all of it weighed heavily on him, making it hard to breathe.
"Chen Shuhua, are you okay?" his assistant asked as he entered the room with concern.
He took a deep breath and forced a strained smile. "I'm fine, just a bit tired. By the way, could you double-check that report on the drug residues for me? Make sure nothing is overlooked."
"Sure, Dr. Chen Shuhua," the assistant nodded and turned to leave the office.
He picked up the phone again and dialed Tu Shen's number. "Tu Shen, I've carefully analyzed all the case materials and your latest clues. I believe the killer is likely a professional Organ Trafficking Gang."
"Organ trafficking?" Tu Shen's voice was filled with skepticism. "Chen Shuhua, I know you're usually meticulous, but this sounds too sensational. Hawk Town is just a small town; how could it be connected to such a heinous crime?"
"I know it sounds unbelievable, but all the evidence points in that direction," he explained patiently. "Think about it: the killer has precisely removed the victims' organs each time, and their methods are clean and efficient. This is not something an ordinary serial killer could accomplish; there must be a large criminal network operating behind this."
"But..." Tu Shen wanted to say more but was interrupted by him. "I understand your concerns. Organ trafficking is not an ordinary crime; it requires higher-level police involvement and could even attract the FBI's attention."
"You’re right, Chen Shuhua," Tu Shen's tone grew serious. "This matter is significant; I need more concrete evidence to convince my superiors to initiate an investigation."
"I will do my best to find more evidence," he said firmly.
"Chen Shuhua, I know you are eager to solve the case, but you must understand that we cannot alert the enemy," Tu Shen reminded him. "If our suspicions are correct, then the power of this Organ Trafficking Gang is certainly formidable. If they sense that we are investigating them, the consequences would be unimaginable."
"I understand, I will be careful," he replied dismissively, a glint of cunning flashing in his eyes.
After hanging up the phone, he rose and walked to the window, gazing deeply at the tranquil town outside. Hawk Town, the place he had lived for many years, really harbored such dark secrets?
"They are lying; they all know..." I whispered in his ear, my voice cold and piercing.
He suddenly turned around but saw only an empty room.
A hallucination; it must be a hallucination! He tried to convince himself, but the unease within him grew stronger.
He opened a drawer and took out a photograph. The picture showed a young couple with radiant smiles on their faces; it was his wedding photo with his wife.
"Where are you?" he murmured to the photograph, his eyes filled with pain and longing.
"You know where I am; you have always known..." My voice echoed like a ghost in his ear.
He abruptly stood up, gripping the photograph tightly in his hand, his knuckles turning white from the pressure. He quickly walked to the bookshelf and rummaged through a pile of documents until he found an envelope.
Inside the envelope were materials related to several recent serial murder cases. He flipped through them one by one until his gaze landed on one particular photograph.
The photo depicted a woman's hand, slender fingers adorned with light pink nail polish.
His pupils suddenly constricted as he recognized that it was his wife's hand!
