Tomorrow, he will be leaving this place. Originally, he had only planned to stay for a month, and just moments ago, he received a call from his father.
"Gu Yan, it's time to come back," he heard his father's steady voice on the other end of the line. Since choosing to leave home during his teenage years, his contact with his parents had been minimal; aside from holiday greetings, his father rarely reached out to him. The last time he received a call was when they discovered the whereabouts of Siren.
His father's health was not as good as it used to be, and business matters were complicated, so in recent years, he had hoped that Gu Yan could take over some responsibilities to help lighten the load. Gu Yan pushed back the damp hair sticking to his forehead, revealing his smooth brow.
For the past few days, he had been aimlessly speculating about Siren's whereabouts like a headless fly, wasting a considerable amount of time at the villa with no results. His efficiency was surprisingly low, which clearly conflicted with his views on time management. Continuing like this would likely yield no progress.
Feeling somewhat disheartened, Gu Yan lowered his gaze, the droplets on his eyelashes making his eyes sparkle. When a being like Siren, endowed with supernatural powers, decides to conceal its whereabouts, Gu Yan's individual efforts are completely insufficient to uncover it.
Having spent too long in the water, his fingers had begun to whiten from the soaking, so Gu Yan decided it was time to leave the pool temporarily. It was also time to address the upcoming transfer of responsibilities. Concerned that Siren might return to the villa, Gu Yan planned to purchase full ownership of the villa to prevent any future vacationing families from encountering Siren. Although the hope was slim, he still preferred to nip potential problems in the bud.
However, this would require careful coordination with the other party and would undoubtedly take some effort. As he pondered this while walking towards the edge of the pool, his long legs touched the shallow end and stepped onto the smooth tiles, but it felt somewhat unreal.
Gu Yan quickly grabbed onto the handrail beside him. Suddenly, his head buzzed and went blank; his eardrums throbbed with a piercing sound as if thousands of people were loudly conversing and arguing in his ears. Yet upon closer listening, there were no substantial words—only an intensifying pain in his nerves.
He shuddered all over and instantly lost strength; even his grip on the handrail couldn't support his weight as he fell backward. Thus, Gu Yan plunged straight into the water-filled pool.
The pool erupted with a massive splash as he hit the surface; with a "plop," Gu Yan sank to the bottom. Large volumes of water rushed toward him, filling his nose and open mouth. He widened his eyes in terror as he felt water enter his nasal passages painfully.
However, contrary to expectations of choking on water, those liquids did not trigger much of a rejection response; instead, they flowed in gently like air. Gu Yan didn't even feel a suffocating lack of oxygen—he felt like a fish able to freely absorb the oxygen it needed from the water.
How could this be…
The tall villa stood alone by the beach, like a loyal guardian, greeting the morning sun by the sea every day. It gazed at the distant lighthouse, both watching over each other as the only traces of human activity in this desolate place.
The presence of the lighthouse indicated that the underwater conditions in this area were treacherous and dangerous. Ironically, while it served as a beacon of hope, it also concealed a lurking demon, representing danger and hardship. Nevertheless, it would emit a dim light in the deep night; even if it was not bright, it at least offered some comfort to those peering into the darkness. However, just like the lights of the villa would eventually extinguish, no lighthouse would remain lit forever.
In the early morning, after a simple shower, Gu Yan changed into his swimsuit and headed to the pool on the third floor. The sprinklers in the flower house were diligently at work, spraying a fine mist under the sunlight that refracted into a rainbow-like glow, filling the air with moisture reminiscent of coastal breezes.
As Gu Yan passed by the glass flower house, he noticed that the flowers were blooming beautifully; this season marked the peak for many varieties. They all chose this moment to showcase their most beautiful sides, competing to release their final breath of life.
Despite the many options available, Gu Yan picked a white rose from the flower house. He did not trim away its bothersome thorns but carefully avoided them as he held it in his hand.
With the pale bud in hand, Gu Yan made his way to the pool. The warm sunlight enveloped him as he took a deep breath, feeling as if he were wrapped in a cozy blanket.
During his month-long stay at the villa, Gu Yan had swum only a handful of times, mostly to accompany Siren. So he decided to seize this last moment and truly enjoy life. After all, on the surface, his primary reason for coming here was to vacation.
A bitter smile appeared on his face, though he had not truly relaxed.
Gu Yan was bare-chested and wore only swim trunks that accentuated his lean waist and firm abs. His physique was not thin but rather well-proportioned—neither too fat nor too skinny.
The water in the pool was clear and at a comfortable temperature. Gu Yan tested it with his foot before descending into the water using the handrail. He swam several laps effortlessly, feeling as light as ever without any fatigue. Swimming had been part of his training since childhood, so it was not a challenge for him.
Finally, when he felt slightly out of breath, he paused at the handrail where he had first entered.
Gu Yan breathed lightly as he looked down at the scales on his chest. Without his shirt on, that patch of blue contrasted sharply against his fair skin.
He had always been puzzled about why Siren left behind a bright red scale on his chest when she departed. So far, it seemed that the scale had shown no particular reaction.
Thinking about fish's affinity for water, he submerged himself in both the bathtub and even more so in the pool, yet nothing happened as he had hoped.
Now he noticed that the scale's most significant change was that it occasionally emitted a faint red glow; its temperature remained unchanged and its light dim.
It was almost useless—could it be that it served no purpose at all?
Gu Yan suppressed his doubts; he was never one to dwell on things without clues. Moreover, discussing such matters now seemed irrelevant.
Today marked his last day at the villa.
Gu Yan was somewhat surprised by the changes in his body. Since he hadn't choked on water, staying at the bottom of the pool wasn't a good thing. He skillfully moved his hands, stirring the water, and soon returned to the shore.
Gu Yan suddenly emerged from the water, droplets gathering into small streams that flowed down his cheeks. Even after swimming a short distance underwater, he felt completely unexhausted; in fact, it was easier to breathe than it had been in the air. This naturally made him think of Siren.
Could it be that he had been in contact with Siren too much? Indeed, over the past month, they had been nearly inseparable and often engaged in close physical contact. Gu Yan had unknowingly ingested a significant amount of Siren's semen. Would he also grow scales and a tail like Siren?
Gu Yan thought with a mix of fear and trepidation. Or was it just that he possessed part of that ability? If it were the former, there would be no way for him to resist. But if it were the latter, once he gained a portion of this unknown power, would the person who granted it to him still be as strong as before?
Gu Yan fell into deep thought. The chaotic and intricate clues before him shocked him, and his still-weak nerves felt somewhat painful. What was the reason behind this? He grasped his hair in distress.
