Lin Fan pulled Xiao Tang's hand and hurriedly ran out of the passage, but the scene before him made him stop in his tracks.
"Where... is this place?" Lin Fan looked at the deep canyon shrouded in thick fog, filled with confusion and unease. The towering rock walls were jagged and covered in vines, exuding a chilling and terrifying atmosphere.
Xiao Tang seemed to sense Lin Fan's anxiety and gently shook her head, indicating that she also did not know where they were.
"It seems like we are lost..." Lin Fan sighed as he took out a map and compass from his backpack, only to find the compass needle spinning wildly, making it impossible to determine the direction.
"This is troublesome..." Lin Fan frowned; there was no mark on the map indicating this place, clearly showing they had wandered into an unknown area.
"Roar—"
A deafening roar echoed from deep within the canyon, startling a flock of birds. Lin Fan's heart tightened as he quickly shielded Xiao Tang behind him, vigilantly scanning their surroundings.
In the thick fog, pairs of crimson eyes gradually emerged, accompanied by a nauseating stench. More and more Zombies surged in from all directions, surrounding them completely.
"How could this happen? Why are there so many Zombies here?" Lin Fan was alarmed; these Zombies were clearly different from the Mutated Zombies they had encountered before. They moved more swiftly and were much more aggressive.
"Roar—"
A massive Zombie let out a thunderous roar, opening its gaping maw to reveal sharp fangs as it lunged toward Lin Fan.
In a critical moment, Xiao Tang suddenly broke free from Lin Fan's grasp and stood in front of him. Her once innocent eyes now sparkled with dazzling light as a powerful force erupted from her small frame, creating an invisible shockwave that sent all the surrounding Zombies flying away.
"Boom—"
The canyon echoed with a deafening explosion. Those Zombies struck by the shockwave fell to the ground like marionettes with cut strings, unable to move again.
Lin Fan stared in astonishment at everything happening before him; he never expected that Xiao Tang possessed such immense power.
Just then, chaotic footsteps echoed from deep within the canyon, accompanied by angry shouts: "Chase! Don't let that little Zombie escape!"
Lin Fan's heart raced as he quickly grabbed Xiao Tang's hand and ran deeper into the canyon.
"Who are they? Why are they chasing us?" Lin Fan asked while running.
Xiao Tang shook her head, indicating that she did not recognize those people either.
"It seems we've gotten ourselves into trouble..." Lin Fan sighed, feeling a sense of unease.
They ran frantically, the footsteps behind them growing closer.
" Xiao Tang, can you sense how far away they are?" Lin Fan asked anxiously.
Xiao Tang closed her eyes, concentrating for a moment, then extended her small hand and pointed toward a dense thicket not far ahead.
"There?" Lin Fan followed Xiao Tang's direction and saw that the thicket was lush with trees and intertwined vines, indeed a good hiding place.
Without hesitation, he grabbed Xiao Tang's hand and plunged into the thicket.
...
Lin Fan and Xiao Tang hid behind a sturdy tree, its dense branches and leaves concealing them completely. Through the gaps in the foliage, Lin Fan could clearly hear the footsteps of their pursuers and their heavy breathing drawing nearer.
"Damn it! Where did that little Zombie go?" a rough voice shouted nearby, filled with anger and urgency. "Search thoroughly! Even if I have to dig three feet into the ground, I want her found!"
Lin Fan's heart raced; he instinctively tightened his grip on Xiao Tang's hand, signaling her to stay quiet. Xiao Tang sensed the danger as well; she clutched Lin Fan's clothing tightly, her blood-red eyes anxiously scanning their surroundings while her small nose twitched slightly as if sniffing something.
"Strange, I smell something sweet," another high-pitched voice said.
Lin Fan's heart sank. He knew that Xiao Tang loved sweets and always carried a faint scent of sweetness; had they discovered her? He nervously glanced at Xiao Tang and found her staring longingly at his pocket, where he had stored the candy he bought for her earlier.
Lin Fan quickly covered his pocket and whispered to Xiao Tang, " Xiao Tang, wait until we're safe to eat, okay?"
Xiao Tang seemed to understand his words; she reluctantly glanced at Lin Fan's pocket before obediently nodding.
"It seems there's some movement over there!" the high-pitched voice called out again.
Lin Fan turned to the sound and saw a small, thin man walking towards them, holding a gleaming dagger and wearing a cruel smile on his face.
Lin Fan's heart sank; he knew he could no longer sit idly by. He took a deep breath, shielded Xiao Tang behind him, and suddenly jumped out from behind the tree, charging at the thin man.
"Who are you?!" The thin man was clearly startled by Lin Fan's sudden appearance and hurriedly raised his dagger to fend off Lin Fan's attack.
However, Lin Fan was too fast. He grabbed the thin man's wrist, twisting it forcefully until the dagger fell to the ground.
"Ah!" The thin man let out a scream as Lin Fan broke his wrist, the intense pain rendering him immobile.
Without any hesitation, Lin Fan punched the thin man in the face, knocking him to the ground.
"Don't come any closer!" Lin Fan shouted at the others who were approaching.
Seeing their companion knocked down, the others stopped in their tracks, watching Lin Fan warily.
"Who are you? Why are you chasing us?" Lin Fan demanded.
"Kid, you'd better mind your own business!" A burly man stepped forward, glaring fiercely at Lin Fan. "This is between us and that little Zombie; you have no right to interfere!"
Lin Fan then understood that these people were after Xiao Tang. He positioned Xiao Tang firmly behind him and declared resolutely, "If you want to harm her, you'll have to get through me first!"
