Shouya did not drive An Xin Ya home immediately. Thinking about how she hadn't eaten all day due to Grandma An's matters, he took her to a restaurant to have a meal.
"Brother Shouya, where is this? Aren't we going home?" The surroundings were unfamiliar to her. Once a blind person enters a new environment, they can lose their sense of direction and feel frightened. She tightly grasped Shouya's hand and asked.
"This is a Chinese Restaurant. You're Chinese, so you should like it. You must be hungry; let's go inside and eat," Shouya said with a gentle smile, his eyes soft as he looked at the nervous An Xin Ya, patiently explaining the situation to her.
"Oh!" An Xin Ya realized.
Shouya guided her into the restaurant and found a window seat for them to sit down.
An Xin Ya listened intently to the sounds around her. She heard people talking, the crisp clinking of bowls and chopsticks, and footsteps...
At that moment, a neatly dressed waiter approached with a smile. Upon seeing An Xin Ya sitting in the chair, he was surprised by her sweet and pure appearance, but her beautiful eyes remained fixed ahead without any focus.
The waiter regained his composure and politely asked what they would like to eat, then introduced their signature dishes one by one.
Shouya looked at An Xin Ya and gently asked, "Xinya, what do you want to eat?"
An Xin Ya was unsure of what to choose. Although she felt a bit hungry, she rarely dined in such upscale places; she usually ate the meals her grandmother prepared at home.
Seeing her flustered, Shouya patiently listed some dishes for her. "We have stir-fried pork, braised pork, sweet and sour tenderloin, braised lion's head meatballs, fish-flavored shredded pork, as well as some vegetable dishes like scallion tofu, tomato scrambled eggs, oyster sauce bok choy, and ants climbing a tree."
"What is ants climbing a tree?"
"It's made primarily of vermicelli and minced pork."
"Oh!" An Xin Ya nodded in understanding. "Brother Shouya, I just want something light."
Shouya smiled and agreed with her request before ordering several light home-style dishes.
During the meal, Shouya continuously served her food while explaining what each dish was. He was considerate and attentive to her needs.
After finishing dinner, she left the restaurant and drove back to the town, parking the car downstairs from her home.
Shouya got out of the car, quickly walked around to the front, opened the door, and carefully helped An Xin Ya out before guiding her upstairs.
"Xinya!" At the staircase, a middle-aged woman came down from above, dressed simply in light brown clothing. Upon seeing An Xin Ya, who lived on the second floor and was being assisted by a handsome man, the woman, having lived here for so long, had never seen this man before. A look of surprise crossed her face. "Xinya, who is this with you..."
"Oh, he is my friend," An Xin Ya said with a smile. From her voice, Shouya recognized that this woman was Aunt Li, who lived on the fifth floor with her husband. They ran a small shop together and were getting by well enough.
Shouya smiled and greeted the woman, who returned the smile before continuing down the stairs.
Once back home, An Xin Ya moved a stool for Shouya to sit on and then went into the kitchen to pour him a glass of water.
Shouya looked around; the space wasn't very spacious, only a few dozen square meters with one room and one living area. Although small, it was tidy and clean inside.
At that moment, An Xin Ya came out of the kitchen carefully holding the water with a smile on her face.
Shouya quickly stepped forward to take the cup from her hands and said, "You don't have to go through so much trouble."
After all, he felt a bit guilty for having her pour him water when she couldn't see well.
"It's no trouble at all, Brother Shouya. You are our family's savior and also our guest; I should pour you a glass of water," An Xin Ya replied with a smile.
Shouya placed the cup on the table and looked at her. Noticing that there were scattered medicines on the floor, he stepped forward and squatted down to pick them up.
An Xin Ya seemed to hear some noise and asked curiously, "Brother Shouya, what are you doing?"
Just then, Shouya's phone rang. He stood up and checked his phone; it was a call from Solomon Base. After answering, he learned there was an urgent matter requiring his return. "Okay, okay, I'll be right back." After hanging up, he put all the picked-up medicines back into their bottle.
"Brother Shouya, do you have something going on? If you really do have something to attend to, then you should go back first!" She had sensed his urgency when he hung up.
"Well..." Shouya felt uneasy about leaving An Xin Ya alone at home and looked at her with concern in his eyes. He didn't want to return to Solomon Base; any urgent matters could be handled by Rafas and Faisal. Fighting wasn't his responsibility; his duty was simply to save lives.
"Don't worry; I can take care of myself," An Xin Ya reassured him.
"Alright!" Shouya thought of something and noticed that there was a telephone installed on their table. He walked over and dialed his own mobile number for easier contact. Then he approached An Xin Ya and told her his mobile number, one digit at a time.
An Xin Ya was quick-witted and had already memorized Shouya's mobile number. She nodded and said she had written it down.
"Remember, if anything happens, call my number, and I'll come right away," Shouya said to An Xin Ya before leaving.
"Okay, got it!" An Xin Ya stood at the door, listening to the sound of his footsteps fading away. Soon after, she heard the rumble of a car from downstairs, which then disappeared. Suddenly, her heart felt empty, as if something was missing.
"You brat, why do you always disappear? Where have you been having fun?" Shouya entered the base and saw Lefas and Sharl looking at him expressionlessly.
"You suddenly called me back; is there something going on?" Shouya asked as he walked up to them.
"It's about the land acquisition," Felsa said.
"You guys can handle this land acquisition project since you're business people. I'm just a doctor who knows how to use a scalpel and operate on patients to find out their ailments," Shouya said while sitting down but was met with a fierce glare from Rafas, forcing him to shut his mouth.
"The plan for the Land Acquisition Project is currently being drafted. Molina represented the British Government in communication with Monica. The bidding will start soon. Although Monica is the designated candidate, we still need to make it look good..." Rafas said seriously about the Land Acquisition Project.
Faisal listened attentively and shared his opinions since Rafas had invested a lot of funds into this Land Acquisition Project.
Shouya was not interested in such matters; he sat there listening to them talk endlessly. Generally confidential matters were discussed secretly back at the base.
The three-person meeting quickly came to an end. As Shouya walked out of the base, his phone in his pocket rang. At first, he thought it was An Xin Ya calling him, but when he took it out and saw the flashing number on the screen, it was from the hospital, causing a fleeting look of disappointment to cross his face.
At that moment, Faisal approached him, placing a hand on his shoulder. Noticing that Shouya's expression wasn't good—he had been paying attention to Shouya's demeanor during the discussion about the Land Acquisition Project—he curiously asked, "Hey, why do you look so distracted? Did something happen?"
Shouya paused for a moment, snapped back to reality, looked at Faisal, raised an eyebrow, and helplessly replied, "It's nothing serious; I just need to head out quickly."
With that, Shouya left the base.
Just then, Rafas walked over with his hands in his pockets, watching Shouya's departing figure before asking Faisal, "Why has he been going out so often lately? I haven't seen him in a while."
"I’m not really sure either. The last time I called him to meet up for drinks in Night City was the only time I saw him, and I haven’t seen him since." With Rafas's reminder, Faisal recalled that he hadn't seen him in quite a while.
"I also heard from the guards that he rarely returns to the base! But every time he does come back, it's always in a hurry, and then he leaves again."
It was said that Shouya had completed the project he was working on in New York. Since it was finished, could there still be something left undone? Rafas didn't want to deal with Shouya's matters and walked straight out of the base towards Mokani; there were many important issues at the company that required his personal attention. He also needed to return in the evening to accompany his beloved Wushuang!
Faisal shrugged; he was currently busy preparing for his engagement party with Yezi and had no time to pay attention to his friend.
Shouya had purchased a small villa outside, effectively moving away from the base. Previously, he lived at the base with Faisal, who was single at the time. Now that Faisal had Yezi, he was entirely focused on her and had organized their own family. Shouya felt somewhat out of place continuing to stay at the base.
Lying on his bed with his hands behind his head, he stared blankly at the ceiling. In the quiet air, he could clearly hear his own breathing. Suddenly, Shouya turned his face to look at the phone resting on the bedside table. Why hadn’t she called him yet? It was already late at night; wasn’t she afraid being home alone?
As soon as he quieted down, images of An Xin Ya filled his mind—her smile... He realized he was going crazy; he had never cared so much for a woman before, nor had any woman ever tugged at his heartstrings like this.
He reached for his phone and opened the call log. He had An Xin Ya's home number and intended to call her, but seeing that it was already ten o'clock at night, he hesitated, fearing that calling might disturb her rest. After thinking it over, he ultimately decided against it.
He got up and walked to the bathroom for a hot shower. Turning on the faucet, warm water sprayed from the showerhead onto his strong, perfect body, cascading down to his feet.
After washing up, Shouya grabbed a towel to dry his damp hair when he thought he heard something—a vibration from his phone. He hurried out of the bathroom and picked up his phone only to find it still showing a black screen. A wave of disappointment crossed his face once again.
What was wrong with him? Shouya didn’t even know what was happening to himself.
