"I don't need any repayment from you, I just need you to be well." Every word she spoke made Shouya's heart tremble. He held her tightly and said, "Don't you want to see Grandma, Wushuang, Yezi, and... me?! Don't you want to see Azure Sky, Endless Sea, the bustling city, and every person and thing in this little town?"
"I want to..." This was something An Xin Ya had longed for. She believed that one day she would regain her sight, but at the crucial moment, she suddenly hesitated. She felt utterly useless, as if she had no potential at all.
"Since you want it, why don't you believe in me? Why not give yourself some confidence?"
All the questions made An Xin Ya cry even harder; she didn't know what to do.
Hearing her sobs, Shouya felt even more pain in his heart. He gently held her shoulders, letting her pull away from his embrace. He looked deeply at An Xin Ya, whose face was drenched in tears, and said with a choked voice, "Xinya, stop crying. You're the strongest, aren't you? You're like an indestructible little cockroach..."
Shouya's words made An Xin Ya laugh through her tears. She sniffled, laughing and crying at the same time, tears streaming down her face.
Shouya wiped the tears from her cheeks with his hands and said, "Stop crying; it won't look good. When we go back, if Grandma sees your swollen eyes, she'll definitely think I've bullied you again."
An Xin Ya nodded, trying to calm her emotions in the car.
After a while, Shouya got out of the car and helped An Xin Ya upstairs. The neighbors they passed by saw them and greeted them. They often saw the couple coming and going together, and Shouya's attentive care for An Xin Ya made them envious of their relationship.
Once they reached the second floor, before An Xin Ya could take out her keys to open the door, Shouya's phone in his pocket suddenly rang out loudly in the hallway.
Shouya took out his phone and saw it was Faisal calling. He feared it might be bad news but couldn't hang up, so he answered. It turned out Rafas was calling everyone back to the base for a meeting regarding a project he was responsible for; he had no choice but to return.
An Xin Ya's keen hearing picked up that he had urgent matters to attend to. After he hung up the phone, she said to him, "Brother Shouya, since you have something important to do, you should go ahead. Thank you for bringing me home!"
"Alright! I'll head out now and come back to see you tomorrow." Shouya looked at her; having brought her home eased his mind significantly. He hurriedly ran downstairs, got into his car, and drove away.
An Xin Ya stood quietly at the door, listening to the rumbling sound of a car coming from downstairs, knowing that he had driven away.
Turning around, she fumbled with her keys to open the door. At that moment, Aunt Li from the fifth floor happened to walk down with a basket of groceries. Seeing An Xin Ya, she smiled and asked, "Xinya, you're back! Oh, where's your boyfriend? Isn't he with you?"
"Ah, it's Aunt Li!" An Xin Ya turned back and smiled slightly upon hearing Aunt Li's voice. However, knowing that Aunt Li was referring to Brother Shouya, she chuckled and said, "He had something to take care of!"
"Oh!" Aunt Li replied with a knowing smile and continued down the stairs.
"Xinya, you're back! Who were you talking to?" Grandma An, who was in her room sewing with reading glasses on, heard the mention of Xinya and took off her glasses. She walked out of the room and asked upon seeing Xinya return.
"I was talking to Aunt Li!" An Xin Ya replied as she walked into the house and closed the door behind her.
"Where's Shouya? Wasn't he out having fun with you? Why didn't he come back with you?" Grandma An asked curiously as she noticed Shouya was not there.
"Brother Shouya just dropped me off at the door and got an urgent call, so he left," An Xin Ya said with a slight smile. She then walked along the familiar path, feeling for the sofa as she made her way to the glass coffee table and set down her keys.
The sofa and glass coffee table, along with other furniture in the house, were all bought by Brother Shouya, replacing all the old furniture they had before.
"Oh!" Grandma An didn't ask anything further but inquired if she had eaten and whether she wanted something to eat.
An Xin Ya replied that she didn't need anything as she had already eaten.
Grandma An found it strange and asked where she had eaten. She knew that Shouya had taken her out for a whole day and would have taken her to some restaurants.
With Grandma's question, An Xin Ya paused for a moment. She couldn't possibly tell her grandmother that she had eaten at Brother Shouya's house. What would Grandma think if she found out? It was hard to say. After a brief moment, she smiled and said that she had eaten at a restaurant.
Every morning, An Xin Ya would go downstairs as usual to buy breakfast for her grandmother. The male clerk at the bakery often asked her why he hadn't seen that beautiful lady.
Hearing the clerk's question made An Xin Ya chuckle, knowing that he must be captivated by Wushuang's beauty. It seemed that he worked the morning shift just to catch a glimpse of her.
Unfortunately, Wushuang was at home, as she had heard that she was pregnant and was taking care of herself. She also heard that Ieyako was pregnant and staying at home as well. An Xin Ya felt happy for both of them, knowing they were going to have their own children.
They mostly chatted over the phone, and An Xin Ya knew that Yan Wushuang's husband, Rafas, was very strict with her, not allowing her to go anywhere. As a result, she often complained during their calls. However, from another perspective, Rafas's actions were also for her own good and for the sake of their child.
An Xin Ya envied both of them. She had once fantasized about having her own child, experiencing the indescribable excitement and joy, along with the nervousness and anticipation.
Wushuang often teased her over the phone, asking when she would marry Brother Shouya.
She felt shy and didn't know how to respond to that question. Thinking about Brother Shouya—was it even possible? She was blind; how could she deserve him?
Walking along the familiar path with her cane, she slowly made her way back home.
Shouya had woken up early and left home to drive to the town. He had spent two or three hours in a meeting with Rafas and others last night, and Rafas had assigned him some tasks, which kept him busy until midnight. He was so exhausted that he fell asleep as soon as he lay down.
When he arrived at An Xin Ya's building and got out of the car, he spotted her not far away. She was walking slowly towards him, holding breakfast she had just bought from the bakery.
Seeing this, Shouya quickly walked over to her. As he approached, his eyes filled with gentle light while looking at An Xin Ya. He said, "Xinya..."
"Brother Shouya!" An Xin Ya was surprised to see him here. Hearing his voice filled her heart with joy and surprise; her beautiful eyes sparkled, and a smile graced her lips.
"Buying breakfast for your grandmother?" Shouya asked as he looked at the breakfast in her hands—two slices of toast and a cup of hot milk.
"Yes!" An Xin Ya replied.
"I'll help you carry it!" Shouya took the breakfast from her hands and then placed a hand on her shoulder, slowly walking back under the watchful eyes of the neighbors.
At that moment, a black Harley motorcycle came barreling through without any regard, injuring several people and knocking over many goods, followed by a chorus of angry shouts.
The man riding the Harley looked like a local, dressed in bizarre clothing, sporting flashy gold chains and sunglasses, crazily speeding toward them.
An Xin Ya was startled by the roar of the motorcycle. It reminded her of the previous Sports Car incident. She tightly grasped Shouya's hand and anxiously asked, "Brother Shouya, what's happening?"
"Don't be afraid! It's just some thugs," Shouya said as he watched the man drive toward them. "Watch out!" He quickly pulled Xinya into his arms, glaring at the reckless rider. The man glanced back at them and arrogantly sped away on his motorcycle.
Fortunately, there were no casualties; these thugs just liked to show off in Chinese neighborhoods.
An Xin Ya clung tightly to Shouya as the roar of the motorcycle gradually faded away, but she still felt scared inside.
"Alright, it's over now," Shouya said, patting her shoulder. He then guided her toward the entrance of the building, leading her up to the second floor and opening the door to go inside.
Grandma An heard the commotion and came out from the kitchen. Upon seeing Shouya, her face broke into a wide smile as she said, "Shouya, you're here!"
"Grandma!" Shouya greeted her with a slight nod.
Grandma An noticed An Xin Ya's pale face and asked what was wrong. "Why do you look so white?!"
Shouya also noticed and realized that she had been frightened earlier; she still had lingering shadows from the last incident. He walked over to her side, placed a hand on her shoulder, and said to Grandma An, "It's nothing; just a foreigner causing trouble on a motorcycle downstairs."
"These people just love to bully us Chinese," Grandma An said, filled with anger when talking about them. Although the United States Government protects the rights of Chinese people, it cannot stop these people's disturbances.
Shouya glanced at An Xin Ya beside him again, held her hand, and gently asked, "Are you okay?"
An Xin Ya shook her head and smiled lightly, saying, "I'm fine!"
If it weren't for Brother Shouya being by her side, she really wouldn't know what to do if such a thing happened again.
Seeing their closeness and Shouya comforting Xinya, Grandma An felt much more at ease and went into the kitchen to start preparing some shredded pork noodles.
"Grandma, your shredded pork noodles are really delicious!" Shouya said while enjoying the dish made by Grandma An, feeling that it was very flavorful and praising her with a smile.
Grandma An chuckled and said, "Is that so? Wushuang also said the same thing, that my shredded pork noodles are very tasty. Oh right, speaking of Wushuang, I haven't seen her in a long time!"
"Grandma, Wushuang is pregnant and is resting at home! Her husband doesn't allow her to go out much!" An Xin Ya chimed in from the side.
"Then we must congratulate her on becoming a mother!" Grandma An said with a smile. "Xinya, what about you?"
"What about me? Grandma, I don't know what you're talking about," An Xin Ya replied, looking straight ahead in confusion.
