Tired yet content, he looked at her rosy cheeks, resting on her, kissing her chin, without saying a word, quietly listening to the sound of her heartbeat.
An Xin Ya stroked his hair dampened by sweat, closing her eyes.
After resting for a while, Shouya finally got out of bed and walked into the bathroom to take a hot shower. At that moment, An Xin Ya quietly entered as well, wanting to shower too. The two stood naked before each other, washing amidst the hot water and foam...
Shouya walked out of the bathroom feeling hungry. He had accompanied Bai Jingsong to a hotel for dinner that night but hadn’t eaten anything, only having a few drinks while being blocked by Rowe and several of his subordinates.
He picked up the phone in the living room and called the hotel front desk to have some dinner sent up.
At that moment, An Xin Ya was wearing a long silk cotton nightgown that revealed only her fair and slender legs. A sweet smile adorned her face, with a hint of shyness as she went to pour herself a glass of water.
“Xinya, when you’re having dinner with Bai Jingsong tonight, take advantage of him being drunk and ask him if his brother Bai Jingyan had a daughter named Bai Huixin,” Shouya said with a chuckle, a hint of sarcasm on his lips. “Even if he’s drunk, he’ll keep his mouth shut and won’t reveal a thing. Regardless, tomorrow he’ll face dire consequences.”
An Xin Ya looked at him in surprise. No wonder he smelled of alcohol when he returned; it turned out he had been drinking with her uncle. But hearing him say that, it seemed Bai Jingsong would never admit to the wrongs he had committed. A man like him would never confess; he would go to any lengths to seize her father's wealth. Yet no matter how much he plotted, he could never foresee that she had already returned!
Seeing her brow slightly furrowed, Shouya stepped in front of her, placing his hands on her shoulders and gazing at her gently as he said, “Soon you will reclaim everything that belongs to you.”
“Mm!” An Xin Ya responded softly.
Shouya embraced her in his arms, his hand stroking her head as he silently comforted her.
Meanwhile, as Bai Jingsong eagerly awaited the signing of the contract, he could never have imagined that he would suddenly receive a court summons. Opening the summons, he saw that it was An Xin Ya who had taken him to court for the crime of inheritance theft!
An Xin Ya? Who could that be? Bai Jingsong looked at the name above and had no recollection of it. Could it be that the court had made a mistake? To confirm, he called the court again and found there was no error; indeed, he was being taken to court.
He was eager to see which ungrateful woman dared to defy him.
Beijing People's First Intermediate Court
The car stopped at the entrance of the court, and Bai Jingsong stepped out, adjusting his suit. With a blank expression, he gazed at the courthouse before walking inside, followed closely by his private lawyer, Lawyer Luo Zhanpeng.
Upon entering, he saw An Xin Ya sitting in the plaintiff's seat, and his expression changed instantly. He recognized her as Shouya's wife. Why was she here? Confused, he furrowed his brow and glanced around, only to spot Shouya sitting among the audience. His face was devoid of any expression, but there was a faint smile at the corner of his mouth that sent chills down Bai Jingsong's spine.
What was going on? Why was she suing him? He quickly recalled that he had never spoken to Mrs. Shou and couldn't remember ever offending her.
Feigning calmness, he walked to the defendant's stand and sat down, his mind racing with questions. Suddenly receiving a court summons with Mrs. Shou as the plaintiff left him utterly bewildered. The accusation was about inheritance theft—when had he ever stolen their inheritance?
Shouya, with a composed expression, looked at Bai Jingsong. He had gathered all the evidence of his crimes; there was no way he could escape this time. He had already hired a lawyer from England named Annie.
The judge announced the court session open. After everyone stood up, it was time for both sides to present their cases. The lawyers were ready, and the plaintiff's lawyer stood up!
The judge glanced at the documents in hand and said, "Now we will hear from the prosecutor."
"Your Honor, I represent the prosecution in suing the defendant, Bai Jingsong, a 55-year-old male! He is accused of modifying Bai Jingyan's will with lawyer Zhang Zhenghao on a date in 1989 and sending Bai Jingyan's daughter to an orphanage in Beijing to seize all of Bai Jingyan's assets!" Annie stood up with a serious expression and addressed the judge, "And my plaintiff is Bai Jingyan's daughter, Bai Huixin!"
"What?!" Upon hearing that An Xin Ya was his brother's daughter, Bai Jingsong turned pale and jumped up, shouting angrily, "What are you saying? You claim she is my brother's daughter? That's impossible! Your Honor, this cannot be true; my sister-in-law has no reproductive capability—how could she have a child? This is utterly absurd..."
"Silence! Silence!" The judge soon took the stand and banged the gavel in hand. "Now we will hear from the main witness!" After listening to Annie's testimony, the judge then instructed Annie to call witness Lin Fen.
At this moment, Lin Fen stepped forward; she was a servant who had worked for the Bai family years ago. Dressed simply, she approached An Xin Ya and paused for a moment upon noticing her resemblance to Master Bai. She then walked over and took an oath presented by a man, declaring herself Lin Fen and swearing sincerely that her testimony was true; if found false, she would accept punishment.
After finishing her oath, Annie stood up from her seat and walked in front of Lin Fen to ask what her current occupation was. Lin Fen truthfully replied that she worked as a dishwasher in a restaurant. Annie then asked what her job had been twenty-one years ago at the Bai family and how long she had worked there. She answered that she had been a servant for six years.
After asking, Annie pointed at Defendant Bai Jingsong and asked, "Do you know the Defendant?"
Lin Fen glanced at Bai Jingsong, who was sitting in the Defendant's seat, then looked at Annie. Annie saw fear and panic in her eyes and comforted her, telling her not to be afraid and to speak truthfully.
Lin Fen nodded and said, "I know him!"
After all these years, how could she not recognize Bai Jingsong, that treacherous scoundrel?
After a round of questioning, Annie returned to her seat.
Bai Jingsong scoffed, sitting there disdainfully. He wanted to see what tricks they would come up with, claiming he had privately altered the will. With these useless witnesses, they could not possibly prove his guilt without evidence.
He glanced at An Xin Ya, who was silently sitting in the plaintiff's seat. No wonder she looked familiar at the banquet; she was the illegitimate daughter born from his brother's affair with another woman, the girl he had sent to an orphanage. Time had passed so quickly; in the blink of an eye, she had grown up. Now she suddenly returned, wanting to take everything from him that belonged to her father—this was absolutely impossible.
After both sides presented their arguments, Bai Jingsong's lawyer was no less formidable than Annie. Lawyer Luo Zhanpeng approached An Xin Ya and began questioning her. An Xin Ya answered truthfully. Lawyer Luo Zhanpeng then walked over to Bai Jingsong and asked if he knew the plaintiff.
Bai Jingsong smiled and denied it, claiming he did not know An Xin Ya at all and did not recognize Bai Huixin either. He further stated that his brother had no daughter and certainly no illegitimate child, asserting that his sister-in-law had no reproductive capability; how could there be such a big daughter?
This made Bai Jingsong raise his eyebrows in a relaxed manner. An Xin Ya lifted her eyes to look at Bai Jingsong; this was her so-called uncle who recognized no kin.
Regardless of the situation, Annie, a top graduate from the University of London Law School with a significant reputation in the legal field, was not intimidated by someone like Lawyer Luo Zhanpeng. Suddenly, she addressed the judge, stating that she had a more important witness and summoned Zhang Zhenghao.
When Bai Jingsong saw Zhang Zhenghao come out, his expression changed instantly as he stared at him in shock. As Zhang Zhenghao passed in front of him, he cast a sidelong glance before walking up to the witness stand.
Annie approached Zhang Zhenghao and began a series of questions.
"Do you know Defendant?" Annie looked at Defendant Bai Jingsong, and from his complexion and gaze, it was clear that he was scared and nervous, beads of sweat continuously forming on his forehead as he wiped it with a silk cloth.
Sitting in the crowd, Shiya had already noticed his distressed expression, and a smile involuntarily crept onto his lips. Seeing him like this brought him immense satisfaction.
Zhang Zhenghao raised his eyes to glance at Bai Jingsong. When their eyes met, he felt a surge of fear from Bai Jingsong's fierce gaze. He inadvertently caught sight of Shouya, who had threatened him before, warning that if he dared to provide false testimony, his family would suffer the consequences. He replied, "I know him!"
"According to the records, you were Bai Jingyan's personal lawyer back then, and the will established by Bai Jingyan went through your hands. Who was designated to inherit all the properties mentioned in the will? Do you remember?" Annie asked, staring directly at him.
"It was inherited by..." Zhang Zhenghao lifted his head again to look at An Xin Ya, "it was inherited by Master Bai's daughter Bai Huixin."
"You are talking nonsense! Zhang Zhenghao, you colluded with others to deceive everyone. My brother has no daughter; all of his inheritance is mine!" Unable to contain himself any longer, Bai Jingsong erupted in anger, glaring fiercely at Zhang Zhenghao and shouting. At that moment, a police officer stepped forward and forcefully restrained him.
"Silence! Silence!" The judge furrowed his brows and struck the gavel again.
"Your Honor, I object!" Lawyer Luo Zhanpeng raised his hand in objection.
"Objection denied!" The judge said expressionlessly, allowing the prosecution to continue.
Lawyer Luo Zhanpeng helplessly lowered his hand and looked at Bai Jingsong, conveying with his eyes that there was nothing he could do this time since all the evidence was against him.
"Since you were Bai Jingyan's personal lawyer, why did the will end up being inherited by Bai Jingyan's brother Bai Jingsong?" Annie asked again.
"Bai Jingsong offered me a sum of money to modify the will. At first, I refused vehemently, but later he even had people threaten my parents and my wife and children to coerce me. I had no choice but to help modify the will. Just days after Master Bai passed away, he brought out the will for reading!" Zhang Zhenghao recounted everything that had happened back then.
