When Betty and I heard the news of Jonas's accident and rushed to his place, he had already left. The hallway was crowded with people discussing the matter.
Betty rushed into the room, knelt down in front of her father's bed, clasped her hands together, and kept murmuring something.
"Father! Why is this happening? You can't leave us. Please open your eyes and look at me. I am your beloved Betty!"
"Child, the person has already passed away. Get ready to handle the aftermath. There's no use in crying and wailing. The dead cannot be brought back to life."
"No, Father, he won't leave! Father, I brought a priest with me, he will surely bless you, and you will get better! Father, please help me check on him, only you can save him."
The priest came to Jonas's side, clasping his hands together in prayer, seeking a miracle to occur.
Jonas had a clean and peaceful face as he lay there, his body not yet stiff. The priest lifted the blanket covering him, revealing a heart-wrenching scene. There was a clear hole in his left chest from a horseshoe, exposing broken bones, and his body was covered in marks from being dragged by a horse, making it unbearable to look at.
After about ten minutes, the priest stood up and told Betty that it seemed there was no hope. Betty was suddenly at a loss and collapsed into my arms. At that moment, Selena also fell down, fainting, and the children cried out, creating chaos in the room.
The onlookers gradually dispersed, expressing regret and sighs. There was also another voice saying that Jonas no longer had to endure the suffering of the world, his sins had come to an end, and he had gone to enjoy peace in the afterlife, which was a good thing.
Jonas's departure caused Selena to temporarily lose control of her emotions. Her state of mind fluctuated, and she even became a bit neurotic. She would often talk in her sleep at night, saying things that others couldn't understand, which worried Betty a lot.
Jonas's departure completely disrupted my life. The only person I trusted and relied on has fallen, and suddenly I feel like I'm back to how I felt ten years ago. My fantasies of a beautiful life have been shattered.
Betty has always been by Selena's side. Yeah, she can't afford to fall down again. She has four children waiting for her to raise them into adults. But with her being in this state of confusion, I don't know if Betty and I can continue our days together.
One night, under the careful care of Betty, Selena suddenly woke up and spoke to Betty as if she were a normal person.
"My dear Betty, how could Jonas leave me! Did I cause him to reach this point? I didn't want him to die, I really didn't!" She burst into tears.
"I think my father was just tired, he wanted to take a break, so he chose to leave. It has nothing to do with us, really, nothing to do!" Betty said, tears streaming down her face. She didn't know how to comfort the woman in front of her. She understood that Selena, although sharp-tongued and petty, wouldn't curse her own husband to die. Deep down, she also loved Jonas, she just couldn't express it."
Selena At this moment, deep down she also deeply regrets, realizing the value only after losing it. Unfortunately, it's all too late, as the dead cannot be brought back to life. There's no use in saying anything.
She leaned on Betty's shoulder and burst into tears.
Selena In the midst of the grief of losing her husband, Selena slept at home for more than a week. She finally woke up and was able to function like a normal person, but sadly, her intelligence had declined. She only recognized her children and couldn't remember anything else.
She had no worries, no sorrows, and spent her days happily playing with her children, not concerned about anything else. Clearly, she had the heart of a forty-year-old and the intelligence of a twenty-year-old.
I used to think that Selena was deliberately pretending to be like this, so that Betty and I would take care of their whole family. However, as time passed day by day, she showed no improvement at all, still the same childish appearance. At this point, I was completely disheartened, it seems that everything is true.
Betty has to take care of their daily lives every day, and the little money I earn is simply not enough to support the food and drink of such a big family. More importantly, I found that Betty is more concerned about taking care of their feelings than taking care of me. Thinking about it, we haven't had sweet words between us for a long time, nor have we had a married life. We are like two unrelated spinning tops, living our own lives on two parallel lines, indifferent to each other.
Until one day, I couldn't bear it anymore. I told Betty that we must sit down and have a serious conversation about our future. We can't just live like this forever.
"Betty, tell me, what are you thinking? Selena is not going to get better. Are you not thinking about yourself? Do you want to take care of them for the rest of your life? What about me?"
"What should I do? Do you have any good ideas? My younger siblings are still so young, and I have no way out. I can't think of how to balance the current situation. I'm sorry for burdening you. I'm really sorry!"
"Betty, let's leave here. I'll take you away from here, to a new place, and we can start a new life. Okay?"
"But what about Selena and the children?"
"Send them to an orphanage. There are many children like them there, and they all live well, with food and clothing. At least there, we can ensure their safety as they grow up. As for Selena, I think she will find a new home, or we can send her to a shelter."
"I can't bear to do this. Perhaps it would be the best solution if I didn't exist, but now that I do, I can't bring myself to send them to such a place. There are refugees everywhere now, and people's lives are already very difficult. Sending them into those crowded places will surely lead to a bad outcome, only hunger and destitution leading to death!"
"How long can you support them by staying with them? You have no income now. I urge you to seriously consider my suggestion!"
"Being able to hold on for one more day is enough. I won't hold you back or burden you. If you want to leave, you can go. You are free to do so. You have already done so much for us, and I am very grateful to you!"
I could sense a hint of choking in Betty's voice, but her tears never fell. I knew she was a strong woman, and it seemed she had already prepared herself to leave here without me.
My dear Jonas, what should I do?
