"Hello? Hello! What happened?" I suddenly stood up straight, nervously asking.
"Chen... Captain Chen..." The technician's voice on the other end was intermittent, "The girl in the photo... she... she is..."
"What happened to her? Hurry up and tell me!" My heart raced, a sense of foreboding washing over me.
"She is... the next target of the killer!" The technician's voice trembled, "We just found out that the killer has already infiltrated her residence..."
I felt dizzy, my mind going blank.
How could this be happening? How could this be?!
I clenched my fists tightly, my nails digging deep into my flesh, yet I felt no pain.
"Her address! Give me her address now!" I nearly shouted.
"Okay... okay, Captain Chen!" The technician hurriedly relayed a string of numbers.
I grabbed my coat and rushed out of the office, shouting into my phone as I ran, "Li Na, notify everyone immediately, the target is in danger, head to..."
I quickly recited the address and burst through the door of the criminal police team, charging into the pouring rain.
The roar of the engine echoed down the empty street as I focused intently ahead, gripping the steering wheel tightly, my speed soaring above a hundred miles per hour.
Rain pounded against the car windows, blurring my vision, but I couldn't afford to wipe it away; I pressed down hard on the gas pedal, hoping to prevent a tragedy before it was too late.
"Hold on! You must hold on!" I silently prayed in my heart, as if that could bring a glimmer of hope to that girl I had never met.
Suddenly, my phone rang urgently; I slammed on the brakes and picked it up. The caller ID showed Li Na.
" Captain Chen, it's bad!" Li Na's anxious voice came through the line, "We've discovered a trap set by the killer; you... you need to be careful!"
"What?" Before I could react, I felt a tremendous force hit the side of the car; it lost control and began spinning wildly in the rain.
The sounds of violent collisions, shattering glass, and twisting metal mixed together in a deafening roar around me.
I felt my body being torn by an overwhelming force; everything turned blood red as my consciousness began to fade...
I don't know how long it was before I finally struggled to open my heavy eyelids.
Everything before me was blurred; I tried hard to see my surroundings but realized I was trapped in the driver's seat. The airbag had deployed, but my head throbbed painfully.
I shook my head vigorously in an attempt to clear my mind and then noticed that my phone had fallen at my feet. The screen displayed an unsent message addressed to Li Na, containing only three short words: "Help... help me..."
It's that girl! She must have secretly sent out this distress message while the killer wasn't paying attention!
I gritted my teeth against the pain in my body, trying to reach for my phone, only to find my left hand trapped under the steering wheel, unable to move.
I turned to look out the window, hoping to catch a glimpse of that girl, but instead, I saw the killer standing not far away, holding a bloodied dagger in his hand. A strange smile crept across his face as he coldly stared at me.
"You've lost, Chen Ge," the killer's voice was deep and hoarse, like a demon from hell. "You can never stop me..."
