I drove furiously, the roar of the engine echoing in my ears, unable to drown out the boiling anger and anxiety within me. My fingers gripped the steering wheel tightly, turning pale from the strain. My sister's terrified eyes flashed repeatedly in my mind like sharp knives stabbing at my heart.
West City Dock Warehouse, a long-abandoned and dilapidated place, was littered with containers that appeared particularly eerie in the night. I parked the car at the entrance of the warehouse and, under the faint moonlight, saw that the large door was wide open. Inside was pitch black, like a beast waiting silently for its prey.
I took a deep breath, stuffed the photo and note into my pocket, retrieved a gun from the trunk, checked the magazine, and then pushed open the car door to step out.
The night wind blew past, bringing with it a whiff of decay. I tightened my coat around me and walked step by step toward the warehouse. It was eerily quiet inside; only the sound of my footsteps echoed in the vast space. With each step, it felt like my heart was about to leap out of my chest.
Clap, clap...
Reaching the center of the warehouse, I stopped. Using the dim light filtering in from the entrance, I vaguely saw a figure sitting on a chair not far away.
"Who are you?!" I demanded sharply, tightening my grip on the gun.
The figure slowly raised its head. In the dim light, I couldn't see his face clearly but noticed he was wearing a pair of light yellow rubber gloves and holding a glinting dagger.
"Captain Chen, long time no see," a deep voice said, laced with mockery and derision.
My pupils constricted sharply; I recognized that voice all too well—it was the "killer"!
"It's you?!" I gritted my teeth in fury. "What have you done to my sister?!"
"Don't worry; you'll see her soon enough," the killer replied as he stood up and slowly approached me.
"Stop! Don't come any closer!" I raised my gun, aiming it at him.
The killer halted, letting out a contemptuous laugh. "Captain Chen, do you really think you can catch me with just a gun? How naive!"
"What do you want?" I forced down my rage and asked.
"I want to play a game with you," he said, pointing behind me. "Do you see that container? Your sister is inside it. But..." He paused, a cruel smile creeping across his lips. "It's rigged with a timed bomb. If you want to save her, you'll have to disarm it before it explodes."
My heart sank to the depths; this madman wanted to play with my life!
"Don't do anything reckless!" I shouted angrily. "Let my sister go; if you have something against me, come at me!"
The killer laughed heartily, his laughter echoing harshly in the empty warehouse. "Captain Chen, you don't have the right to negotiate with me! Now, let the game begin!"
With that, he suddenly lunged at me. Instinctively, I pulled the trigger. A gunshot rang out as the bullet grazed his shoulder.
He grunted but didn't stop; instead, he charged at me even faster. I quickly stepped back and aimed again to shoot.
Bang bang bang...
The gunshots echoed in the warehouse, bullets striking the Container with a piercing sound, yet they could never hit the killer.
"Useless, Captain Chen, you can't catch me!" The killer laughed maniacally while dodging my bullets. "Time is running out; you'd better hurry to save your sister, or else..."
He didn't finish his sentence, but I knew that if I couldn't disarm the bomb in time, my sister would... The thought gripped my heart like an invisible hand, nearly suffocating me.
