Gu Yan left the house through the back door he had come in. During the conversation, the umbrella hanging in the entrance was almost dry, but the rain outside showed no signs of stopping. Gu Yan looked up at the sky, estimating that it would continue to rain for a long time. He opened the black umbrella and walked into the curtain of rain.
As he walked, he slowly pondered. These matters did not necessarily require someone else's intervention, but fearing his father's discovery, Gu Yan had to entrust Dr. Li with the investigation. Fortunately, he still trusted him. His conversation with Dr. Li had cleared some of the confusion in his mind, yet Gu Yan still found it difficult to fully let someone else handle things; some matters needed his personal attention to feel secure.
However, he was unsure where his father's spies might be, and this feeling of being restrained was clearly unpleasant. But once he reached a place out of his father's sight, it would be much easier to act. It seemed he needed to find an excuse to leave home for a while, and this excuse had to be reasonable enough not to raise his father's suspicions. Gu Yan thought silently.
Perhaps due to the rain, the air today was very humid, yet Gu Yan felt an unprecedented comfort, even though he usually disliked such gloomy weather because getting wet in the rain made clothes cling uncomfortably to the skin. But now, his heart felt a slight joy from the gentle patter of raindrops around him.
Gu Yan walked slowly in the rain. He moved from a narrow alley onto a wide street where more people began to gather. Rain was common in this country, so most people continued their lives as usual.
Gu Yan brushed past one person after another as he headed toward the parking area. It was still quite a distance from home, and when he left, he had instructed the driver to come directly for convenience.
As he walked forward, someone suddenly bumped lightly into his left shoulder, as if someone was rushing by and unintentionally collided with him. Gu Yan turned his head and saw only a figure leaving behind him. The person was tall and wrapped in a loose black trench coat that reached down to their calves. After bumping into Gu Yan, they seemed to glance back but said nothing before continuing to run ahead hurriedly. The person wore a hat with a long brim that obscured most of their face from the side, so Gu Yan could only see their elegantly curved jawline.
Before Gu Yan could collect his thoughts, that figure had already disappeared from view. This familiar scene resembled a pickpocket's act on bustling streets; Gu Yan reached into his pocket and confirmed that his wallet was still there. Perhaps they were in a hurry. He smiled lightly and did not think much of it.
From behind, a flash of gold suddenly caught Gu Yan's eye at the neck of the running figure—this was their hair, a beautiful pure gold color. Gu Yan felt his heart skip a beat at that moment. A wave of excitement surged through him, bringing forth an intense feeling of nervousness.
That face obscured by the hat felt oddly familiar even if he could only see its lower half. Who is this...? No impression came to mind; he couldn't remember, but why did it feel so familiar?
He felt the scales on his chest heating up, as if urging him to do something.
"Wait!" Gu Yan called out loudly without thinking.
However, the figure did not stop; instead, it quickened its pace.
An inexplicable impulse drove Gu Yan to chase after it. With a "thud," the black umbrella he had been holding fell to the ground, rolling a few times and getting splattered with the filthy mud from the street.
He let the rain flow down his face as he continued to pursue.
The person's hair came loose while running, a dazzling mane of golden hair dancing in the wind. Gu Yan's eyes were fixed on that silhouette as he pushed through the crowd, not even pausing to apologize, urgently moving forward.
The person ran quickly but did not choose a clear route, clearly unfamiliar with the surroundings.
They did not head towards the densely populated areas; that tall figure was already quite conspicuous, especially when running alone on the road. This meant that although Gu Yan was at a distance, he would not lose sight of them.
Gu Yan followed that person from the bustling street into a secluded alley. There was no one else around except for the two of them.
The distance between them grew smaller, while Gu Yan was already panting heavily.
However, looking at his surroundings, a flicker of delight crossed Gu Yan's mind.
At the next corner, the figure gracefully turned and disappeared from view, but Gu Yan was not anxious. Instead, he slowed down and adjusted his breathing rhythm.
Although he often worked out, such a long-distance run was clearly taking its toll on him.
Gu Yan gazed at the corner and slightly curled his lips into a smile.
Raindrops soaked him as he ran; his hair was damp and dripping water from the ends, making him look particularly disheveled, yet his eyes sparkled with excitement.
He walked slowly through the alley and indeed saw a wall made of bricks blocking the path completely in the middle of the alley. Given its height, it would be impossible to climb over without assistance from another person.
He was very familiar with this terrain; when he saw that person approaching this area, Gu Yan knew he could catch up with them.
Even if that person had not entered this alley, Gu Yan would have taken risks to temporarily let them disappear from his sight and then take a shortcut to intercept them.
The person stood in front of the wall, rain dripping from their hat brim and coat hem in a steady rhythm. Their upright back resembled that of a noble knight, fearless in the storm and lost in their own thoughts.
Just by looking at their back, one could infer that they were undoubtedly good-looking, and that mysterious aura intrigued Gu Yan even more.
Moreover, as he got closer, Gu Yan felt his heart racing faster, and the scales on his chest radiated warmth.
He slowly approached that person until they were just a few steps apart; Gu Yan subtly blocked the alley entrance to prevent them from escaping again.
"Do I know you?" Gu Yan asked aloud.
The man did not speak, but his body moved as if he was about to turn around. Gu Yan held his breath, staring intently at the part of the man's face that was becoming visible. He wanted to know if he had seen and recognized this person before.
The man turned slightly, revealing his profile from the dim light, then his full face. Although he wore a hat, his face was completely exposed to Gu Yan's eyes. Gu Yan could hear his own gasping breath.
It was a face with very distinct Western features: a straight nose, deep-set eyes, and a pair of azure blue irises, complemented by soft, flowing blonde hair. He was clearly an adult Western male, but unlike most people, his facial features were exquisitely refined, blending allure and purity. Even though he wore an unremarkable trench coat with a standard cut, he appeared tall and handsome.
But that was not what attracted Gu Yan the most.
Gu Yan noticed the expression on the man's face as he gazed at him. It was a complex emotion of nostalgia or perhaps longing. Why would such a beautiful face show such a deep and affectionate expression while looking at him?
Gu Yan stared at him, unable to utter a word.
