In the bustling mall, Zhou Jiajia linked arms with Shu Ran and casually chose a dessert shop to sit down and take a break.
At their four-person table, two empty chairs were piled high with shopping bags, showcasing Zhou Jiajia's frenzied achievements of the night.
Fortunately, the shop was not crowded, and no one bothered them to move.
Shu Ran rubbed her sore ankles from walking all evening, grateful that she had worn white sneakers while shopping with Zhou Jiajia. If she had worn high heels, she would have at least gotten a few blisters.
Meanwhile, there was a young lady who always dressed to the nines every time she went out. She had hundreds of pairs of high heels that she rotated without repeating any. After a night of wearing eight-centimeter heels, she showed no signs of fatigue and was focused on dividing her Mango Pancake with a fork, taking small bites and sending them to her mouth.
After finishing half of it, she took a big sip of lemon juice, the sourness hitting her taste buds and making her squint her eyes. "Refreshing!"
"Waiter, another glass please."
Shu Ran asked her, "Why are you ordering so much? Can you finish it?"
Zhou Jiajia's face showed irritation as she exclaimed, "I want to drink to my heart's content!"
"I'm so angry; I can't believe I ran into such a bizarre person while buying clothes. Damn, it ruined my good mood."
Shu Ran comforted her, "Don't be mad; her brother apologized, right?"
"What good is an apology? Why do we even need the police then?"
"Next time you encounter someone like that, just keep your distance to avoid ruining your mood. Also," she suddenly became serious, "I don't think her brother is any better. They are from the same family; how could the sister be so off while the brother is so upright?"
"Even if there is such a difference, they definitely wouldn't get along so harmoniously."
She earnestly dissected the relationship between the Jiang siblings, but Shu Ran didn't catch a word of it.
She lowered her head, staring at the phone screen where a call was flashing, hesitating whether to answer or not.
Noticing Shu Ran's silence, Zhou Jiajia turned to ask, "What are you doing?" Following her troubled expression, she glanced down and asked, "Who is this? Why aren't you answering?"
Shu Ran said gloomily, "Qin Xian."
Zhou Jiajia brushed her hair back and encouraged, "Just answer it. What are you afraid of? He won't bite you."
Shu Ran licked her somewhat dry lips and picked up the phone, "Hello?"
"It's me." His voice was a bit deep, blending with the faint sea breeze.
"Yeah, I know. What's up?"
"Come pick me up at the airport tomorrow at four in the afternoon." His tone was calm, "I have something else to do, so I'll hang up now."
Pick him up?
Wait, what’s going on?
Shu Ran was stunned, staring at the disconnected call.
Zhou Jiajia leaned over, "What are you two talking about?"
Shu Ran blinked, confused, "Qin Xian wants me to pick him up tomorrow at four."
"Then go."
"The problem is I don't have a car."
Shu Ran's family had two cars; one was taken by her brother to G City, and the only one left was her mother's little sheep for work.
Could she really drive the little sheep to pick up Qin Xian?
……………
How does it feel to have an inexplicable sense of humor?
She shook her head, immediately dismissing the thought.
"It's simple, just drive my car," Zhou Jiajia said boldly.
"But..."
"But you don't want to go, right?"
Zhou Jiajia hit the nail on the head with her thoughts, and she nodded.
"Come on, Shu Ran, why are you being so wishy-washy? Everything I told you before was useless."
"I already said you need the courage to face anything that comes your way. It doesn't matter if it's Qin Xian or anyone else; when they show up, just go for it. What are you afraid of? When soldiers come, block them; when water comes, cover it with earth."
"You don't need to be scared. The more afraid you are, the more interested he becomes, and he'll take advantage of you. Just face it normally, like how you do with me; don't be timid."
Shu Ran pondered for a moment, then finally lifted her head, her eyes clear and full of confidence as she said, "Okay! I understand now."
...
The next day, Shu Ran drove Zhou Jiajia's red Beetle on her way to pick up Qin Xian.
Having not driven in a while, she took her time on the road and swayed a bit. She finally arrived at the airport fifteen minutes after the agreed time.
Qin Xian had been waiting by the roadside for a while. He stood tall, his features delicate and exuding a cold aura. His aloofness stirred the hearts of nearby young girls; some secretly took photos while bolder ones approached him to strike up a conversation.
Yet he remained silent and expressionless until he saw Shu Ran, when his demeanor softened slightly.
Shu Ran ran over breathlessly, "I'm sorry I'm late."
Qin Xian smiled as he gently brushed aside the hair that had been blown out of place by the wind, his movements tender beyond words.
"It's okay."
Shu Ran felt a bit awkward.
To the passersby nearby, this was undoubtedly a pair of intimate young lovers; the boy had returned from out of town, and the girl rushed to greet him. Their brief reunion by the roadside felt like a sweet moment after a long separation.
There was a strong sense of affection between them, and combined with their outstanding looks, they seemed like a perfect match, making others envious.
"What a great couple, the guy is handsome and the girl is beautiful."
"Yeah, and that guy is so gentle."
"My inner girl is swooning."
"This is just too much; I need to find myself a boyfriend too."
The passersby whispered among themselves. Shu Ran was not used to being the center of attention in public, and she felt a bit embarrassed and uncomfortable.
She hurriedly urged, "Let's go."
"Okay." Qin Xian happily opened the car door and sat in the passenger seat.
Shu Ran followed closely behind, fastening her seatbelt and placing her hands on the steering wheel as she slowly started the car.
Qin Xian looked around at the interior decorations, which were filled with Little Girl vibes, and there was a faint scent of perfume lingering in the air.
He asked, "Is this your car?"
Shu Ran honestly shook her head. "No, I don't have a car. This belongs to Zhou Jiajia."
He tilted his head, intently watching her drive seriously. "What kind of car do you like?"
"What?" Shu Ran turned a corner. "I don't have a favorite car."
"Where are you going?" She smoothly drove out of the airport and onto the highway.
"I'm going to eat; you decide the place." There was a hint of fatigue on his face, barely noticeable unless one looked closely.
He leaned his head lazily against the headrest. "I'll rest for a bit; wake me when we arrive."
He had rushed back a day early, working over twenty hours straight without a wink of sleep, and now his body was beginning to feel exhausted.
With her beside him, he felt an inexplicable sense of security. He slowly closed his eyes, his eyelashes casting a shadow over his face.
After a few minutes, his breathing gradually steadied, and his expression remained unchanged.
He had actually fallen asleep.
Shu Ran turned her head; he was with his eyes closed, half leaning against the back of the seat, looking as calm as still water.
The flamboyant charm that usually lingered around him was now in slumber. At this moment, he seemed completely non-threatening, quiet like a big boy.
