"Self-evaluation, Mom feels that she has lived a complete life and has no regrets."
Shu Mother smiled with relief, "Your brother married your sister-in-law, who is virtuous and capable, and they even had Little Yu Yu. The family is harmonious and joyful. Mom feels very comforted."
Shu Ran also smiled, crying and laughing at the same time, looking both comical and pitiful, like a little clown.
Shu Mother spoke as if she were delivering her last words. Each word carried a subtle sadness and sorrow that pierced Shu Ran's heart painfully.
"But what about you," Shu Mother changed the subject, "the one I worry about the most is you."
"What will you do when Mom is gone?"
Shu Mother's tears streamed down her face, reflecting Shu Ran's youthful innocence. Her heart was filled with concern and reluctance, expressed through her choked words.
"Don't blame Mom for always urging you to find a place to settle down, don't blame me for pushing you. I have no choice; I know my health condition and understand your personality."
"I'm afraid that if I don't urge you now, there won't be another chance."
"Mom..."
Shu Ran saw her crying and was unable to speak through her own tears.
Shu Mother continued with red-rimmed eyes, her words filled with worry and unease, "Every time I think about how you'll be left all alone after I'm gone, I just can't feel at ease."
The corners of Shu Ran's eyes were already red from crying. She raised the back of her hand to wipe away the hot tears rolling down her cheeks, unable to say a word.
After an unknown amount of time, Shu Yi finally returned with breakfast. Seeing the two of them silently gazing at each other with swollen eyes made his heart ache.
He softly entered the hospital room, pretending not to notice their tear-streaked faces. Naturally walking to the bedside, he lowered his voice to remind them, "It's time for breakfast, Mom, Shu Ran."
...
After finishing breakfast, Shu Ran was urged by Shu Yi and Shu Mother to go home. The reason was that she hadn't slept all night and had dark circles under her eyes that made her look like a panda. Moreover, she felt groggy, with disheveled hair and lacking energy.
Shu Yi was worried that if Shu Mother was fine but she herself collapsed from exhaustion instead.
Shu Ran initially held a firm attitude against going home, but with a command from Shu Mother, she had no choice but to obediently return.
Every day in the hospital, people come and go, seeking medical attention for various ailments, both minor and severe.
As she walked through, she saw a husband carefully supporting his pregnant wife for a check-up, both of them smiling lovingly at each other, making others envious.
She also witnessed a three-year-old child being held by his mother while getting an injection from a nurse, the child crying and struggling noisily.
In the end…
She saw the moment when the surgical lights went out and the doctor stepped out, his expression showing the effort he had put in, bringing immense sorrow to the family members waiting outside.
Wailing and weeping filled the air.
Shu Ran covered her ears and hurried past, not daring to look or listen.
She ran down the corridor, feeling more alone, helpless, cold, and exhausted than ever before.
Yet she looked around, searching for a hug. From beginning to end, there was still no one by her side.
She forced a smile, feeling utterly dejected.
At that moment, she suddenly missed Qin Xian so much; she wanted to share all her thoughts with him, to hide in his warm embrace, to have him by her side.
She really missed him so much.
“Shu Ran.”
Hmm?
Shu Ran was taken aback.
What?
Shu Ran thought she was hearing things; otherwise, how could she hear Qin Xian's voice behind her, a voice that was as clear as ever yet gentle?
"Shu Ran."
Shu Ran turned around abruptly, only to find the person she had been longing for standing right in front of her.
He wore a long beige trench coat, the warm tone softening his cold aura, making his tall and slender figure stand out even more.
His tousled black hair fell freely over his forehead, and below it were his deep, affectionate eyes, which were now firmly locked onto hers.
She heard his clear voice cutting through the layers of air, across the three-meter distance, through their gazes, drawing closer and invading her ears.
"Shu Ran, I’m back."
In that moment, Shu Ran's entire world came to a standstill.
Her heartbeat stopped, her breath halted, and countless thoughts ceased.
Only the reflection of him remained in her clear eyes.
Vivid and bright.
Like a ray of light in a dark valley, like a flower on a sheer cliff, like a flame in a bone-chilling night, like a support in despair and sorrow.
Like him.
Her nose tinged with bitterness as the tears she had just managed to hold back threatened to fall again.
She quickly turned away, desperately looking up to avoid crying. She forced a smile, telling herself not to cry and not to make him worry.
However, when Qin Xian stepped behind her and reached out with his long arm to pull her into his embrace, she finally lost control. She softly sobbed, "Qin Xian, Qin Xian."
A pair of long hands slowly wrapped around her back, spreading upward and gently patting her. They dispelled her panic and fear. "Don't be afraid; I'm here."
She didn't know how long it had been, but under his gentle comfort and care, she finally began to calm down.
"Why did you suddenly come back? Isn't your work still unfinished?"
Qin Xian ruffled her hair and inadvertently noticed her red, teary eyes. Like a little white rabbit, she looked so pitiful that he couldn't help but smile with affection and said, "Silly girl, I already know."
He knew she had gone to the hospital with her mother in the middle of the night, knew about her mother's dire situation, and understood her fears and anxieties.
He knew everything.
So he would not give her the chance to bear it all alone. If he couldn't be by her side during the sorrow five years ago, then this time, he would not allow her to fall into despair or isolation, nor would he let her suffer from that kind of illness.
"I've arranged everything regarding your mother. This afternoon, a doctor specializing in brain cancer will come to take over as your mother's attending physician. Several authoritative experts will also come tonight for a meeting to discuss."
As he spoke, he held her tightly again, providing her with absolute security. "With me here, you don't need to worry. Right now, all you need to do is go home and take a shower. I'll take you out for breakfast."
Saying this, he took her hand, their fingers intertwined. His movements were gentle and delicate, causing Shu Ran to feel an inexplicable warmth rising in her heart.
She grasped his hand tightly in return, her eyes clear as she said, "Qin Xian, thank you."
