Incredible, truly incredible.
Zhou Jiajia clicked her tongue, unable to believe it as she read it two or three times. After confirming it was posted by Shu Ran, she finally commented below: "Oh, oh, oh, someone is not around, borrowing wine to drown sorrows in the middle of the night?"
Meanwhile, Shu Ran's phone was buzzing incessantly.
A flood of comments and WeChat messages came in, all inquiring about her post on Moments.
Shu Ran opened her Moments and found that within just a few minutes, there were already over twenty comments.
Most were from old classmates she hadn't seen in a while, along with a few friends, mostly asking who the person in the picture was and if he was her boyfriend.
Some mutual friends of hers and Zhou Jiajia saw Zhou Jiajia's comment and instantly felt a surge of gossiping curiosity.
Zhang Yuxin: "I seem to smell a hint of romance."
Li Xin: "Oh my gosh, Shu Ran, do you have a boyfriend now?"
Cao Yun: "Oh, oh, oh, my brother really is something else. Leaving my sister-in-law all alone on such a lively night, how lonely and cold it must be for her. So pitiful!"
Wu Wang replied to Cao Yun: "??? What’s going on? My goddess is taken??? And it's your brother???"
Cao Yun replied to Wu Wang: "What’s wrong with that?"
Wu Wang replied to Cao Yun: "Oh my gosh! My goddess!!! I'm heartbroken!!!"
Li Chenyi replied to Zhou Jiajia: "What’s happening here? Shu Ran has a boyfriend?"
Lu Qisheng: "Hey beautiful, are you alone? Do you want me to keep you company?"
Qin Xinyi replied to Lu Qisheng: "Come in, I’m going to sleep."
Ji Ruge: "Finally achieved success in love."
There were still a bunch of chaotic comments below, some asking Cao Yun and Zhou Jiajia for more information, others joking around. Shu Ran felt both amused and helpless, unsure how to respond. After thinking for a moment, she decided not to reply at all.
Perhaps because today was New Year's Eve for the Little Year festival, some people happened to be on long breaks, some were on their way home, and some had already arrived home. In the middle of the night, they were idly scrolling through Moments when they stumbled upon her post.
So there were a bunch of comments piling up below; just as she was about to scroll through them, a few more appeared, making it impossible to keep up. Shu Ran even suspected that they were treating this place like a chat channel.
Deciding not to scroll anymore, she set her phone aside and picked up a plump dumpling, popping it into her mouth. The satisfaction of having her stomach filled with food washed over her, accompanied by the pleasure of sipping red wine and listening to the faint sound of fireworks in the distance. Many old memories drifted away like a dream, fading into the tranquility of the late night, forgotten and no longer existing.
Perhaps she was too hungry, or maybe Aunt Chen's dumplings were just too delicious; before she knew it, she had finished an entire plate of dumplings and drank a full glass of red wine.
The feeling of being full brought her joy. She hummed a tune while washing the dishes and wiping the table, returning the red wine to its original place. Then she slowly moved back to the table, picked up her phone, and leisurely checked the messages they had sent.
Before long, the kitchen light went out, and everything seemed to return to its initial silence, leaving only the sound of footsteps on the stairs.
Unbeknownst to her, someone nearby suddenly set off fireworks in the middle of the night. As Shu Ran stepped into her room, she looked up just in time to see dazzling fireworks outside the floor-to-ceiling window, soaring and falling, each one bursting continuously in the night sky, making it incredibly beautiful with a display of colors.
It was a wonderful evening.
Shu Ran poured herself a glass of water and stood quietly by the window, watching the fireworks for a long time.
If someone saw her at that moment, they would surely be captivated.
The colorful glow of the fireworks flickered across her lovely face. She smiled lightly; though her smile was subtle, it radiated a sense of ease and comfort. Her clear eyes gazed out the window with an unexpectedly gentle expression, as if she were looking at someone very dear to her.
Bathed in a layer of brilliance, her white nightgown shimmered. Her petite figure appeared even smaller against the backdrop of countless sparks but was also full of vitality, resembling a fairy pausing for a moment in the mortal world.
It wasn't until her phone rang that all her thoughts came rushing back.
Looking at the familiar nickname on the screen that brought both exasperation and familiarity, Shu Ran almost eagerly swiped right to answer the call from her husband.
"Hello?"
Shu Ran answered with anticipation, and the first thing she heard him say was, "I saw it."
Shu Ran paused for a moment and asked, "Saw what?"
"I saw you said you missed me."
Unable to help herself, Shu Ran chuckled softly. Did this person really call in the middle of the night just to tell her he saw her post?
She clearly remembered that he didn't like scrolling through social media.
After thinking for a moment, she decided to tease him, "Yeah, I was thinking just now, but not anymore."
His voice noticeably turned cold, "Why?"
Shu Ran playfully replied, "Because I'm full now, so I don't want to think about it."
"Does that mean I have to keep you hungry in the future?" After a moment of thought, he said seriously, "No way, I can't bear that. So you might as well not think about me."
Shu Ran was at a loss whether to laugh or cry, "Hey, I was just joking with you."
"Why are you still awake so late, drinking and eating dumplings? Did you skip dinner again?"
At this point, there seemed to be some anger in his voice. Shu Ran knew that he had always worried about her not eating properly when he wasn't around, which is why he called Aunt Chen every day to supervise her meals.
So Shu Ran didn't dare to tell him she had only eaten a few bites; instead, she lied and covered up, "I... ate something, it's just that... I suddenly craved dumplings and went down to boil some."
Fearing he would ask more questions, Shu Ran quickly changed the subject, "I let Jia Jia go back."
As expected, he didn't press her about dinner anymore but questioned her decision instead, "Why?"
"I see Zheng Tong running back and forth here every day while working so hard; it's quite exhausting. Plus, Jia Jia is pregnant and has to be careful about everything she eats and does. We don't have professional maternity caretakers here. Zheng Tong is worried, and I'm worried too, so I decided to let her go back for now."
