Chapter Two: Spiritual Treasure Compendium
"Goo goo goo."
His stomach protested with a series of growls. Since leaving early in the morning to gather herbs, it was now deep into the night, and Ye Tian had not eaten a single bite, causing his stomach to protest vehemently.
"Sigh... stop complaining..." Ye Tian helplessly sighed, looking up at the night sky. "Heaven, do you want me to starve to death here just to save the ghost official some travel expenses? I won't let you have your way!"
His tragic background and harsh environment did not make him negative or pessimistic; instead, they forged him into someone more optimistic and resilient.
The world was silent, except for the rain that fell even harder.
The rain was so intense that the river swelled rapidly. If Ye Tian did not leave soon, the rising water would likely drown him in no time.
Gritting his teeth, Ye Tian summoned all his strength to crawl toward the trees on the riverbank, thinking to himself, "Damn it, I can't die like this before I see Wang Hu kneeling before me begging for mercy!"
After tremendous effort, Ye Tian finally crawled into the thicket by the bank.
The thorns in the forest were numerous, and he inevitably scraped against them, causing his wounds to throb even more painfully. As he cursed under his breath, he grimaced and gently rubbed his injuries. At this moment, his consciousness began to fade further.
As he rubbed, Ye Tian's eyes slowly began to close, and his movements became slower and slower.
"Is this how I'm going to die...?"
Ye Tian thought this when suddenly a cacophony of shouts and curses rang in his ears—bastard! Bastard! Bastard! The ugly faces of Wang Hu and Li Ding surfaced in his mind...
"I cannot die!!!"
Ye Tian summoned the last ounce of strength he had left and struck fiercely at the wound on his chest. A piercing pain shot through him, instantly sharpening his senses.
He gasped for breath and then reached into his robe to pull out the herbs he had gathered that day. It was a plant with a deep blue hue; according to the book, it was called 'Crimson Heart Herb.'
Ye Tian stared blankly at the Crimson Heart Herb and muttered to himself, "Sigh... why can't you be one of those Beneficial Herbs that provide benefits equivalent to several days of cultivation for an ordinary person? Instead, you're just some crimson heart..."
As Ye Tian suddenly thought of something, he hurriedly took out the Parchment Book that he had been carrying while gathering herbs these past few days and began to flip through it.
"Here it is." Ye Tian stopped flipping and started reading carefully.
"Crimson Heart Herb, Yellow-Grade Second-Tier Spirit Medicine, ha ha! Indeed, there is always a way out!"
According to the records in the Parchment Book, the Crimson Heart Herb was actually a Yellow Rank second-tier spirit medicine, which could heal various internal and external injuries. Although it was only a Yellow Rank second-tier herb, it was still a spirit medicine, and its efficacy was naturally several times better than that of ordinary herbs.
Following the description in the book, Ye Tian peeled away the layers of the Crimson Heart Herb's outer skin until finally, a bright red bud appeared in his hand.
"So that's why it's called Crimson Heart Herb."
He then brought the bud to his nose and took a deep sniff. A faint fragrance filled his nostrils, instantly clearing his mind.
"It really works!" Ye Tian exclaimed with joy and swallowed it whole.
A warm current instantly flowed throughout his body, as if every pore was being filled. The pain from some swollen areas was carried away by the warm flow; at first, there was a slight tingling sensation, but soon after, the swelling began to visibly diminish at an astonishing speed. In the blink of an eye, everything returned to normal. Although some more severe injuries were not completely healed, the pain had significantly reduced. Now, not only had his life been saved, but he should also be able to walk without any issues.
"Thank goodness for you." Ye Tian looked at the Parchment Book in his hand and silently thanked his father, whom he had never met.
Three days ago, following his mother's last wishes, he found this Parchment Book and a small Dan Furnace hidden in a secret compartment at home. The Dan Furnace seemed ordinary, but the Parchment Book appeared quite precious and mysterious because the text inside was sewn with a material resembling Golden Thread, shimmering with golden light. However, what attracted him even more were the contents recorded in this book—spirit medicines, Celestial Weapons and Treasures—various things he had never heard of before.
Ye Tian was eager to verify this information, so he had spent the last few days gathering herbs in the mountains. Sure enough, today’s Crimson Heart Herb had saved his life.
...
By the time he returned to his dilapidated thatched cottage, it was already late at night.
Creaking open the door, Ye Tian was too lazy to light a candle and simply collapsed onto his bed. After tidying up a bit, he eagerly took out the Parchment Book from his bosom, ready to read it carefully.
"Spiritual Treasure Compendium."
Ye Tian silently read the four golden characters on the cover and recalled what his mother had said in her letter. According to her words, this Spiritual Treasure Compendium and the Dan Furnace were originally left for him by his father. However, fearing that these two items were of great significance and worried that his childlike nature might lead him to reveal them and invite disaster, they were not given to him directly.
Thinking of this, Ye Tian felt that this item was extremely mysterious, so he began to read it carefully.
That night, Ye Tian was immersed in the Spiritual Treasure Compendium. According to the records in the book, Ye Tian gained a general understanding of the spiritual herbs on this continent.
Everything in this world has a strict classification system. Whether it is Celestial Weapons and Treasures, Spiritual Materials, or martial arts formations, everything is divided into four major tiers from high to low: Heaven, Profound, Earth, and Yellow. Each tier is further divided into nine grades from high to low. The Underworld Eye Grass he wanted to find for his mother is classified as Earth Level Five, which belongs to the lower tier of spiritual herbs. The one he had previously consumed was a Yellow Rank Grade Two herb. Although it was close to the bottom tier, its effect was remarkable for Ye Tian, effectively curing his ailment. Therefore, one can imagine how astonishing the potency of Profound Level or Celestial Level herbs would be.
He did not know when the rain outside had stopped, but as dawn broke and the rooster crowed, Ye Tian realized he had been reading all night.
Ye Tian let out a big yawn and thought to himself, "The content recorded in the Spiritual Treasure Compendium is simply too vast. There are tens of thousands of types just in the section on spiritual herbs alone, not to mention the sections on Spiritual Materials, Celestial Weapons, Celestial Treasures, Martial Arts Section, formations, and so on. It is absolutely impossible to read everything in one night and remember it all; I need to digest it slowly. Anyway, there is plenty of time ahead. What’s urgent now is to catch up on some sleep while it’s still not fully bright outside so I can regain my energy and search for more spiritual herbs. I must strive to achieve good results in the Spirit Martial Town Martial Arts Selection Tournament in six months! Only then will I earn respect and have the right to shape my own destiny!"
The Martial Arts Selection Tournament is a tradition of the Martial Sovereign. It is held every four years in every city from the Martial Capital down to small towns. The winners receive numerous benefits: first, they gain recognition from everyone; second, they receive rewards from the organizers; and third, and most importantly, they have a chance to obtain a spot for further training at Divine Wood County or Cloud Sea Sect.
Moreover, anyone is eligible to participate in this event. To promote martial arts training among the public, any city under the Martial Sovereign will designate a specific place to freely distribute foundational training methods for body refinement for anyone to learn. However, whether one can break through the Warrior Threshold and enter the realm of martial arts training without guidance remains another matter.
"They say that reaching the ninth stage as a martial artist is a bottleneck. Yet here I am nearly four years later still stuck at the second stage. That brat Wang Hu must already be at the fifth stage; even Li Ding has reached the fourth stage..."
After a pause, determination suddenly flickered in Ye Tian's eyes.
"I must surpass them! Then during the Martial Arts Selection Tournament, I will make them regret under everyone's gaze! I will repay their disdain and insults a hundredfold!"
With such thoughts swirling in his mind, Ye Tian unknowingly fell into a deep sleep.
