I was placed on the bed.
Grandma Li, leaning on her cane, walked in shakily and asked, "Xiao Ling, what happened? How did you get hurt after just stepping out for a bit?"
Other relatives chimed in with their questions.
"Grandma, I'm fine." I forced a smile.
"You might have hurt your bones; the doctor will be here soon," Li Xingyu reassured. "You all shouldn't crowd here; the air isn't circulating."
"Oh right, right!" Grandma Li quickly urged the relatives to wait outside.
The room was left with just me, Li Xingyu, and Grandma Li.
"How could you take care of Xiao Ling like this?" Grandma Li scolded Li Xingyu. "I've told you before, Xiao Ling is now your wife; you need to protect her..."
"Grandma, I know," Li Xingyu said, a bit helpless and guilty. "This time it was my oversight."
"Hmph! If anything happens to Xiao Ling, I won't spare you!" Grandma Li waved her cane and turned to leave.
I endured the pain and looked up at Li Xingyu. "Should we call the police to catch Wang Qiling?"
"Not just her," Li Xingyu sat down beside me. "There's also Li Chengji."
"No need to thank me," he added.
I lowered my gaze, feeling warm inside.
So this is what it feels like to be protected.
"Actually, you could have avoided this incident," Li Xingyu suddenly said. "Wang Qiling is Li Chengji's fiancée; it's not surprising that she came back with him to the Li Family. If you don't like her, just hire a couple of bodyguards next time to keep her away from you."
His words made me laugh, my shoulders shaking slightly.
"Does it still hurt?" Li Xingyu frowned slightly.
I quickly stopped laughing and maintained a serious expression.
"Stay away from them next time," Li Xingyu reminded me again.
I obediently nodded, "I understand."
Li Xingyu stared at me for a moment before suddenly sighing.
"What’s wrong now?" I asked in confusion.
"…It's nothing." Li Xingyu patted my head, "From now on, with me around, you won't have to suffer any grievances."
Soon, Doctor Qian arrived. After a thorough examination, he concluded that I had a bone fracture. "You can't get out of bed for a while; you need to rest."
Li Xingyu asked detailed questions, and Doctor Qian patiently answered each one. After listening for a while, I couldn't help but ask, "What's all the noise about downstairs?"
Li Xingyu lowered his gaze. "If you pursue this, Wang Qiling will be taken away."
"Oh." I blinked. "I don't want to pursue it; let them come up and apologize."
"Okay." Li Xingyu agreed without hesitation.
After a while, Wang Qiling and Li Chengji came upstairs. Wang Qiling's eyes were red, looking innocent and pitiful. Li Chengji held her hand tightly, watching me warily as if afraid I would hurt Wang Qiling again.
I was speechless. "What are you two here for?"
Li Chengji opened his mouth but couldn't say anything. Wang Qiling squeezed his hand, signaling him not to be nervous. Then she stepped forward and smiled slightly at me. "Xiao Ling, please don't blame Chengji; it's all my fault. I didn't mean to push you down..."
When did I ever blame Li Chengji?
"Xiao Ling, I know you're angry with me and think I ruined your marriage, so you're targeting me. I can understand," Wang Qiling said as tears fell from her eyes. "But Chengji and I truly love each other. Can you please support us?"
Who is targeting her?
"Miss Wang, you really have a vivid imagination," I replied, feeling exasperated. "I just wanted you to come up and apologize; I'm not targeting you at all."
Wang Qiling's expression stiffened, and her tears flowed even more heavily. Li Chengji held her tenderly and frowned. "Dong Ling, sometimes it's better to let things go; don't make it too extreme."
I rolled my eyes. "I want to make it extreme; what can you do about it?"
"You..." Li Chengji was angry. "Lingling has already apologized to you. What more do you want?"
"I do not accept her apology," I replied coldly. "You all can leave now."
"Dong Ling, you..." Li Chengji wanted to say something more, but was stopped by Wang Qiling.
