Chapter 7: Want My Life?
Not far from the Pavilion, several people who were out for a walk heard the shouting and rushed over.
At that moment, Xiao Yun lay on the ground motionless, his chest alternating between red, white, purple, and blue, changing colors in rapid succession. Someone reached out to touch his face; it felt scalding hot one moment and as cold as ice the next...
"What happened? What is wrong with this young man?"
"Ah, isn't he the guy who often comes to the park to draw portraits?"
"What kind of illness does he have? This is so strange."
"Forget it, it's better not to get involved. We don't even know where he came from; let's just leave him be!"
...
At that moment, Xiao Yun felt as if he had detached from his physical body and was slowly rising. He suddenly shivered: "Am I dead? Is this what it feels like for the soul to leave the body?"
He remembered reading in a tattered book that after death, a person's soul might separate from their body. However, scientific research has shown that this phenomenon is an illusion caused by conditions like brain hypoxia. Regardless of which explanation is correct, Xiao Yun felt scared.
As a young man in the prime of his life, he hadn't even enjoyed the true pleasures of life yet; it would be so unjust to die like this!
As he floated higher and higher, he noticed that he had drifted up into the clouds when suddenly that old man appeared before him.
The old man said, "Hahaha... you brat, did you just feel very uncomfortable in your body?"
Xiao Yun shouted in anger, "You old fool! I have no grievances with you in the past or present. Why do you want to kill me?"
The old man laughed and replied, "What are you shouting about? Aren't you alive and well?"
The old man continued, "Let me tell you the truth. That Seven-Colored Heart Pearl of mine is indeed an extremely yang object. It's just that your physique is too weak to handle it for a moment, which caused this reaction. Now, let me give you two protective golden energy rings to help improve your physical condition and intelligence!"
As he spoke, the old man waved his hands in the air, producing two shimmering golden rings. With a flip of his palms, one ring "whooshed" into Xiao Yun's heart and disappeared instantly, while the other ring directly entered his mind.
As a wave of heat coursed through Xiao Yun's body, his consciousness seemed to awaken slightly.
"Alright," the old man chuckled, "my vacation in the upper realm has come to an end, and I can't stay with you any longer. Take care of yourself from now on!" With his words, he vanished into the mist...
It was unclear how much time had passed when Xiao Yun slowly opened his eyes, only to find himself lying in a fragrant flowerbed. A beautiful young woman with long black hair and sparkling big eyes was staring at him, her brows furrowed with concern.
"Oh, you're awake?" The girl smiled at Xiao Yun.
Xiao Yun quickly sat up and asked in surprise, "Where is this place?"
"This is Fragrant Flower Shop."
From the girl's introduction, Xiao Yun learned that her name was Duan Qingxue and that she owned this flower shop.
The girl appeared to be around twenty-three or twenty-four years old, with willow-shaped brows and almond-shaped eyes. Her skin was as white as jade, and she wore a snow-white chiffon sundress that accentuated her slender waist, making her figure appear graceful as she moved lightly, resembling a delicate flower.
Fragrant Flower Shop was located at the Jincheng South Road Intersection, quite a distance from Mirror Lake Garden. Xiao Yun had no idea how he ended up here.
"I went to the park to deliver flowers to a couple at noon. Passing by the Pavilion, I found you collapsed on the ground and asked someone to bring you here," Duan Qingxue explained, seemingly sensing his confusion.
She smiled again, saying, "I was going to call for an ambulance since you hadn't woken up yet, but it seems you woke up just in time!"
Xiao Yun felt grateful for her kindness and said, "Thank you!" At that moment, he not only noticed Duan Qingxue's extraordinary beauty but also her kind heart.
Duan Qingxue then asked, "How did you faint at the Pavilion in the park?" Remembering how she had found him surrounded by a faint rainbow light made her quite curious.
Xiao Yun replied with a smile, "I'm not sure how I fainted; I was just sitting there fine and then suddenly fell down."
He didn't know how to explain about the old man giving him the rainbow Heart Pearl; it was quite complicated and he feared being thought of as crazy. So he decided to keep it simple.
Duan Qingxue looked worried and asked, "Do you want me to take you to the hospital for a check-up?"
Xiao Yun replied, "No need; I'm usually in good health!"
He wanted to take his leave but was stopped by Duan Qingxue, who glanced at the drawing board on his back and asked with a smile, "Are you an art student? Can you introduce yourself?"
It seemed her curiosity was quite strong. Xiao Yun blushed and said, "My name is Xiao Yun. I came from the countryside and I'm an orphan. This is my first time in Galaxy City, and I'm making a living by drawing portraits in the park."
"So you can draw portraits for others," Duan Qingxue said. "Can you draw one for me now?"
"Sure!" Xiao Yun felt that coming to Galaxy City was indeed the right choice, as all the people asking him for portraits were beautiful women.
Duan Qingxue half-squatted among a bunch of roses, slightly turned her body, tilted her head, and let her long hair cascade down one side of her neck. She smiled gently at Xiao Yun. Her smile was like glaciers melting, spring returning to the earth, and new buds blooming under the sunlight; in that moment, all the flowers in the flower shop seemed to fade in comparison.
Xiao Yun found a good angle, set up his drawing board, took out his brush, mixed the colors, and quickly began to draw.
Before long, a portrait was completed. Duan Qingxue took it in her hands and looked at it; her pretty face flushed with excitement as she exclaimed, "It's so beautiful! I really like it!"
Seeing Duan Qingxue so happy, Xiao Yun felt an inexplicable excitement inside him and smiled foolishly.
Duan Qingxue asked, "How much do I owe you?"
Xiao Yun hurriedly shook his head and said, "No charge; I can't accept your money."
Duan Qingxue asked curiously, "Why can't you accept my money?"
Xiao Yun replied, "You saved me; how could I take your money?"
Duan Qingxue laughed and said, "I didn't do anything for you."
Xiao Yun insisted, "Anyway, I won't take your money!"
"Alright then," Duan Qingxue said. "After my flower shop closes tonight, I'll treat you to dinner. By the way, where are you staying?"
Xiao Yun's face turned red again as he said, "I don't have... anywhere to stay right now; I'm living under the overpass."
"What? You live there?" Duan Qingxue exclaimed in surprise. "How about this: you seem like a sincere person. There's a room behind my flower shop; you can stay there." She told him that she also rented a place nearby and sometimes stayed at the flower shop but spent more time resting at the rented house.
Xiao Yun shyly said, "This... how can I accept that?"
Duan Qingxue replied, "What's there to be embarrassed about? It's settled then!"
"Thank you, Sister Qingxue!" Xiao Yun expressed his gratitude.
However, he felt an indescribable joy inside; he never expected to finally have a place to stay, and it was free. More importantly, this room was filled with so many beautiful flowers accompanying him.
Just as he was trying to figure out how to thank Duan Qingxue properly, she suddenly proposed a very strange condition—
"Xiao Yun, I let you stay here because I saw you had nowhere to spend the night. However, you must promise me one thing: if you hear someone calling your name outside in the middle of the night, do not respond and definitely do not open the door!"
Uh—Xiao Yun was taken aback and said, "I don't have anyone familiar here; how could someone come calling my name in the middle of the night?"
Duan Qingxue pondered for a moment, her expression stern as she said, "Now that you're staying here, someone will know your name!"
Xiao Yun found this more unbelievable than his encounter with that old man and asked, "What would happen if I responded or opened the door?"
Duan Qingxue frowned slightly and said seriously, "Then you're as good as dead because at that time, many people will want your life!"
