Zhong Kui's Diary
At that moment, I was taken aback by the appearance of such a beautiful girl. I awkwardly shook my robe and stammered, "I... I'm absorbing the earth's spiritual energy, do you believe me?"
The girl chuckled softly, "Aren't you supposed to be performing a ritual? How did you end up here?" Her smile was captivating, her eyes crescent-shaped like the moon, her nose slightly wrinkled, and the smile at the corners of her mouth spread across her face like ripples.
"I got tired from performing rituals, so I came out for a stroll!" I stretched my limbs and casually twisted my neck, then cracked my knuckles to prove my words were true.
"Oh, I see. I thought you were standing in the corner because you needed... well, you know!" The girl covered her mouth and laughed, "The restroom is just on the first floor!"
Did she really think I was standing there because I needed to relieve myself? Am I that inconsiderate? At the very least, I would find a more secluded spot! I laughed heartily, "Why are you still awake so late?"
"I'm the private doctor for the Jin Family. My name is Yang Guo'er!" The girl lowered her hand, a hint of confusion flashing in her eyes. "So much has happened with the Jin Family lately that I don't even know what I should do."
Old Man Jin died mysteriously, Jin Zhao and Jin Yang were imprisoned, and butler Shih Chih-Yang was also killed under strange circumstances. Just days ago, these people were still alive and well beside her. I thought anyone would struggle to adapt to such sudden events, especially a girl.
I nodded, unsure of what to say.
"By the way, can you help me take a look at this Taoist? Do you recognize him?" After a moment of silence, Yang Guo'er suddenly pulled out her phone and asked me without any context.
"What Taoist?" I was confused about what she meant.
While swiping through her screen, Yang Guo'er said, "Old Man Jin treated me fairly well. I thought I'd help him take some photos before and after his death to organize them for the Jin Family. Earlier tonight, I was standing there planning to take some distant shots of the memorial hall."
Yang Guo'er pointed towards a tall green tree on the grass. Standing next to it at night, one could easily overlook it.
"I had just taken two pictures when I saw a Taoist hurriedly leaving this way. At that moment, I felt puzzled and casually took a picture of him." Yang Guo'er found the photo and handed it to me.
My heart skipped a beat. Could this person be the murderer? Taking Yang Guo'er's phone to look at the photo revealed a Taoist with Jin Yang's window in the background. Although it was taken from a distance and in haste, I could still make out his facial features. This person had deep-set eyes and an ominous expression; he looked somewhat familiar—I had definitely seen him before.
"Do you mind sending me this photo?" I pointed at it.
"Sure!" Yang Guo'er took back her phone, asked for my WeChat ID, and sent me the photo.
After chatting with Yang Guo'er for a bit longer, I hurriedly said goodbye and found Qingfeng Daozhang. I showed him the photo and asked if he recognized this person. Qingfeng Daozhang glanced at it in shock and said, "I've never seen him before! As Zhong Kui, aside from my own brothers, I've only brought you and Fatty into this. Don't start involving unrelated people."
I don't recognize Qingfeng; it seems he is not from Lingxu Temple. I didn't expect there would be others impersonating Taoists. Who is this person? Why do I feel like I've seen him before?
I want Qingfeng Daozhang to replace Ding Fatty, so I hand my phone to Ding Fatty and ask, "Fatty, have you seen this person?"
Ding Fatty glances at it and laughs, "Isn't this that guy, New Moon Scimitar?"
"What?" I say in surprise, quickly pulling Ding Fatty to a nearby secluded spot.
"New Moon Scimitar, yeah. He was quite impressive when we were fighting underground," Ding Fatty says while wiping sweat off with his robe.
Hearing this from Ding Fatty jogs my memory. Two years ago, underground fighting was rampant in Star City, and Ding Fatty and I were just getting by in that scene. However, the underground fights in Star City were not as bloody as people outside thought; injuries happened frequently, but fatalities were rare. The only case of someone being severely injured was caused by New Moon Scimitar.
I can't believe his shadow has appeared here two years later. I ponder for a moment and ask Ding Fatty, "What does the name New Moon Scimitar mean?"
"Who knows? He probably came up with it himself. Just like my nickname, Meat Noodle Flying Dragon..." Ding Fatty says with a sigh.
I look at Ding Fatty with keen interest, and he can't help but ask, "You don't suspect he's the killer, do you?"
"Showing up in a Taoist robe all sneaky-like is very suspicious!" I reply thoughtfully.
Ding Fatty looks innocently at his robe and asks, "Ghost Brother, are you talking about me?"
I can't help but laugh and think for a moment before pulling out my phone to search for a number. "I hope I still have Black Scar's number."
Black Scar was our manager back when we were fighting underground, similar to a madam in a nightclub; he had control over a large number of fighters. In these times, it's tough to make a living; there will always be people who exploit others' value.
Finally finding Black Scar's number, I dial it and soon hear the call connect.
Black Scar's voice comes through the line: "Yo, or should I say A Ghost? What brings you to call me today?"
After some small talk, I ask, "Black Brother, I'm looking for New Moon Scimitar. Do you have his phone number?"
Black Brother hesitates for a moment: "New Moon Scimitar? You're in Wuling City? Wow, it's been a while since I've heard that nickname. I do have one of his numbers, but it's been two years since we last contacted each other; I'm not sure if the number is still valid. I'll send it to you."
"Alright, thank you first, Black Brother!" I expressed my gratitude and casually asked, "By the way, Black Brother, do you know why Wuling City is called New Moon Scimitar?"
"It's simple because his weapon is a Crescent Blade! The kind that can fly out and come back," Black Scar replied with a laugh. "Fatty has been with you all along, right? There's a black market fight happening in Moon City now; do you want to go earn some extra cash?"
"Thanks, Black Brother, our income has been decent lately. If we need money, I'll contact you first," I replied dismissively. However, I was shocked by Black Scar's words; it turned out that New Moon Scimitar was something like Blood Drop Assassin, capable of taking heads without a trace. This also explained how Shih Chih-Yang had his head severed despite being two meters away from the window.
"Okay then, we'll be in touch," Black Scar said before hanging up. Shortly after, I received a text message with a phone number.
The next morning, Ding Fatty and I took a day off from Qingfeng Daozhang and returned to the shop to discuss things with An Ran. Following that, An Ran used the landline to dial Wuling City's number.
"Hello, this is China Mobile Star City Branch Service Center. My employee number is 957. May I ask if you are Mr. Wu from Wuling City?" An Ran asked sweetly.
Ding Fatty was anxiously fidgeting beside me, gesturing wildly.
An Ran covered the receiver and looked at Ding Fatty suspiciously.
"Yes! You!" Yang the Fatty whispered.
On the other end of the line, Mr. Wu from Wuling City said something unclear. An Ran nodded at us and continued, "In this China Mobile gratitude event for Star City’s million rewards activity, Mr. Wu... you have been selected as a lucky user for the third prize, which is a Zipp Lighter."
We had planned for An Ran to make this call for several reasons. Firstly, only China Mobile and China Unicom could freely call their users' mobile numbers; secondly, winning a third prize felt more genuine than winning a first or second prize; finally, Fatty from Wuling City smokes and would likely be interested in a lighter.
After pausing for a moment, An Ran explained, "Mr. Wu, since we are the gift team of the after-sales service center, the calling number is not 10086. If you have any questions about this event, you can call 10086 for inquiries. Oh no, we don't need your account number; we just need you to provide an address. Within three working days, we will deliver the gift to your home. Yes, shipping is free."
"Okay, okay." An Ran quickly wrote on paper.
Ding Fatty and I leaned over to see what An Ran was writing down: Qingxiu District Mingxiu Middle Road Jinxiu Jiangnan Area Mingyue Pavilion Building E Room 160.
After An Ran hung up the phone, Ding Fatty asked, "Ghost Brother, should we call Lingfeng?"
Lingfeng is a friend of mine who helped me meet Jin Yang while I was in detention. Although he is quite young, he holds the position of captain in the Star City Public Security Bureau Security Team. He comes from a powerful background and is likely part of the red elite; being the captain of Star City's Public Security is just one of his many accomplishments.
I hesitated for a moment and said, "Forget it; we don't need him. The two of us should be able to take down Wuling City!"
"Someone has a knife!" Ding Fatty exclaimed, "The New Moon Scimitar, Blood Drop Assassin, it's scarier than Li Tama's flying daggers!"
"Don't be so nervous. He can't possibly carry a knife all the time, right?" I reassured Ding Fatty, though I felt a bit uneasy myself.
In the end, I called Lingfeng and explained the situation to him. Lingfeng seemed quite interested and agreed with a smile.
Half an hour later, we got into Lingfeng's car at the entrance of the wholesale market—a Cadillac. This guy was anything but low-key.
"Do you have a gun?" Ding Fatty jumped into the passenger seat and asked right away. We were all familiar with each other; Lingfeng had seen us in underground fights, and that's when we became good friends. Ugh! Ugh! Ugh! That's when we started to become good friends.
"Do you need one?" Lingfeng tilted his head with a mischievous grin, which frustrated Ding Fatty because that kind of grin always belonged to super handsome guys, and there was no doubt that Lingfeng was one of them.
"What do you think we called you here for? Don't you know our combat abilities?" Ding Fatty asked with a grin.
"I brought it, I brought it. It's in the storage compartment right in front of you!" Lingfeng stopped joking.
Ding Fatty opened the drawer in front of him, and sure enough, a shiny blue handgun was sitting inside.
