"Okay."
I nodded in response.
Xiao An heard my voice and shouted from the living room,
"Mom, Jiang Yue has already met Xiao Huai,
but Xiao Huai doesn't like Jiang Yue and dismissed her."
The air suddenly became quiet,
and Xiao Huai's Mother shot a glare at Xiao An.
Xiao An pouted and continued watching the TV drama.
"Xiao Huai is upstairs; I'll go call him."
To ease the awkwardness, Xiao Huai's Mother stood up and walked upstairs.
Before long, Xiao Huai appeared at the corner of the second floor.
"What's going on?"
He had one hand in his pocket and looked down at me.
I took a deep breath and gathered my courage to speak:
"President Xiao, the company has changed leadership;
can I go back to work?"
Xiao Huai looked at me expressionlessly and coldly replied, "Jiang Yue, the company doesn't keep idle people."
My face turned pale, and Xiao An couldn't stand it anymore;
she spoke up for me: "Xiao Huai, Jiang Yue takes her job seriously;
please give her a chance."
Xiao Huai turned to Xiao An and raised an eyebrow, saying,
"Seriously? You, an intern, how much do you know about this job?"
Xiao An was taken aback, her face turning pale as she looked at Xiao Huai's Mother for help.
Xiao Huai's Mother glanced at me and then at Xiao Huai, sighed, and said, "Xiao Huai, Yueyue is a child I watched grow up. I know her character, so please help her."
Xiao Huai remained silent with a cold expression and turned back to his room.
Xiao An, feeling very angry, complained to Xiao Huai's Mother, "Mom, look at Xiao Huai. He’s gotten so arrogant that he doesn’t even listen to you anymore."
Xiao Huai's Mother comforted me, saying, "Yueyue, don’t take it to heart. Xiao Huai just has a bad temper."
I felt extremely awkward and regretted coming here. "Auntie, I’ll head back now." I smiled at Xiao Huai's Mother and turned to leave.
Xiao Huai's Mother followed me and reminded me, "Yueyue, you forgot your things."
"No thanks, Auntie. Grandpa and Grandma are getting old and can’t eat sweets."
As I closed the door, I couldn’t help but sigh. After a few years apart, Xiao Huai was completely different from before. It felt like I didn’t even recognize him anymore.
After being rejected by Xiao Huai, I caught a cold. It rained heavily that day, and I stood in the downpour for a long time before finally getting a ride.
Once home, I fell ill and slept in a daze for three days. After recovering, I discovered there were over ten missed calls on my phone. A colleague informed me that the company was going to hold me accountable. I felt like crying but had no tears; not only did I face criticism...
This month's salary is gone, and I even have to pay the company twenty thousand.
A colleague who has a good relationship with me complained over the phone, "President Xiao looks so refined, but I didn't expect him to be so ruthless. He wasn't like this before."
I was also present on the day the new leader took office. He was dressed in a suit, elegant and polite. I nodded, "He really is different." At least he is very different towards me.
My colleague continued to vent, "You have no idea. We thought a young and handsome leader like him would have some airs about him, but he doesn't at all. He speaks softly and gently, yet when it comes to handling matters, he's so harsh."
I listened silently, feeling extremely frustrated. I have no money; my salary is with Ma Jia. Ma Jia is my boyfriend, three years older than me, whom I met through a blind date. He is down-to-earth and treats me well. My mom likes him a lot and says he is suitable for marriage.
I give him all my salary to manage, but he never gives me any money to spend. I lost my job and don't want him to know, let alone tell him that I have to pay back twenty thousand.
After thinking about it all night, I messaged Xiao An to ask for Xiao Huai's WeChat. Xiao An didn't think much of it and directly sent me Xiao Huai's WeChat contact. I added Xiao Huai, but my request was never accepted. I felt too embarrassed to reach out to him again after that.
