Qinglan and her mother walked to the arched bridge on the west side of Liu Family Village, where they saw a little girl about Qinglan's age squatting on the bridge playing.
"Lin Sister."
Upon seeing the little girl, Qinglan broke free from Liu Xiuzhen's hand and quickly ran towards her.
The little girl was poking at the green moss on the blue stone slabs of the bridge with a dry twig.
Hearing someone call her, she stood up, turned around, and pointed at a patch of moss she had just been poking, saying, "Lanlan, come here and look, there are so many snails."
The little girl called Lin Sister by Qinglan was named Lin Xi. She was a little over a month older than Qinglan, with a round face, black hair with bangs that brushed her eyebrows, fair skin, and wearing an orange-yellow sports outfit with white and blue stripes on the cuffs and pants. Standing on the bridge, she looked like a rainbow that had landed there.
Upon hearing about the snails, Qinglan dropped Liu Xiuzhen and dashed over to squat on the bridge with Lin Xi to look at the snails.
Seeing that Qinglan was playing with Lin Xi, Liu Xiuzhen didn't mind her anymore and carried her vegetable basket towards Dazhuang at the east end of the village.
At the east end of the village stood Azure Stone Bridge. Once Liu Xiuzhen walked onto Azure Stone Bridge, she entered Liu Family Village.
The first house upon entering the village was Liu Xiuzhen's home, a wooden stilt house built against Azure Dragon Mountain. It had green tiles and flower-patterned windows, surrounded by a fence enclosing the front yard. A blue stone path led into the house, while the backyard was filled with lush bamboo.
Liu Xiuzhen slung her vegetable basket over her shoulder, pushed open the bamboo gate of the courtyard, and walked along the blue stone path towards the house.
Just as she was about to step over the threshold, she suddenly heard a heart-wrenching cry from Bai Cuifen's house diagonally across. Accompanied by fearful shouts, it echoed, "Oh no! Come quickly! Someone help!"
Liu Xiuzhen was about to enter when she collided with Qing Shusheng, who was rushing out.
Qing Shusheng had just returned home from the fields. Upon hearing Bai Cuifen's call, he immediately dropped what he was holding and dashed outside, only to bump into Liu Xiuzhen.
"Where do you think you're going? If you dare to step out that door today, I'll show you what death looks like," Liu Xiuzhen shouted angrily as she grabbed Qing Shusheng's sleeve.
Qing Shusheng slapped Liu Xiuzhen's hand away. "You could die a hundred times and still be alive; someone is really going to get hurt here."
After saying that, ignoring Liu Xiuzhen's furious shouting behind him, Qing Shusheng rushed out of the yard like a whirlwind.
Seeing that her shouting was ineffective, Liu Xiuzhen threw the vegetable basket on the ground, scattering greens everywhere.
"You little rascal, come back here! If you dare to go today, I swear I will—"
With that, Liu Xiuzhen chased after Qing Shusheng out of the yard.
Standing outside the courtyard gate, with one hand on her hip and the other pointing at Qing Shusheng, who was running ahead, Liu Xiuzhen stomped her foot and yelled at his back.
"Sister-in-law, you picked so many vegetables early in the morning! You're really diligent. Have you eaten breakfast yet?"
Just as Liu Xiuzhen was rolling up her sleeves to chase after Qing Shusheng, she suddenly heard someone speaking to her from behind.
Turning around, she saw Teacher Lin from the nearby village standing behind her with a big smile on his face.
"Oh, it's Teacher Lin! Teacher Lin came over so early? You heard her shout too?" Liu Xiuzhen turned around and, upon seeing the speaker, quickly reined in her previously arrogant demeanor and smiled sheepishly.
The person speaking to Liu Xiuzhen was Lin Xi's dad, Lin Wenhui, who had just been playing on the bridge with his daughter. His home was in a small village near Liu Family Village. Although it was only a few hundred meters away from Dazhuang, it was unlikely that the people in the small village could hear Bai Cuifen's shout just now, which is why Liu Xiuzhen asked him that.
